The Saddest Song Ever?

I have a list of songs that make me sad, they are in my Sadness folder at home so I will have to wait till I get home to list most of them, but one of my favorites is Shadow of Doubt from the soundtrack to the anime Escaflowne

I find it to be sad because of the character it is tied to, as well as the emotions that listening to it bring out in me.

Much of what Loreena McKennitt sings is sad, but that is probably why I like her music so much. Bonnie Portmore, Anachie Gordon, are just a few and the fact that she takes beautifully sad poems and put them to music is wonderful as well.

Jennifer Haines has some beautifully sad piano pieces.

I love the three parts to the Decemberists song "The Crane Wife"

Much of what Seth Lakeman sings works for me as well.

Same thing with Kate Rusby, I especially like her lullaby "Sho Heen"

When it comes to music often I go for the stuff that makes me sad, the sadder the better. I am also a big fan of Irish Folk Music, so much of what I have listed falls in that category. I love the hymns in church that make me feel sad so some of my favorites include, "Abide with me", "Be still, my soul", "Nearer, My God, to Thee"

Ok, now that I am home I can share some more of the sad songs I like.

Sanvean by Sarah Brightman

Who will sing me lullabies by Kate Rusby

Cruel by Kate Rusby

Falling by Kate Rusby

I am stretched on your grave by Kate Rusby

Broken by Lifehouse

Why should I cry for you by Sting

Ghost Story by Sting

Fragile by Sting

Like I said in my earlier post, I often prefer to listen to music that makes me sad, so there are quite a lot of music that I find sad. If given the opportunity I would probably find more songs to list, so I should probably stop now.

I could wait about two more weeks till I'm done with the final tracks but, oh well. Here are the lyrics. For musicians it's pretty much just, (whole notes on bass guitar), D-G-A and a short walk down during the chorus D,C#, B and G.

Title: Thank God for Granny

Granny gave me to Jesus when I was a boy,

but I had some wild oats to sow.

When just about everyone gave up on me,

Granny, she wouldn't let go.

Chorus:

Thank God for Granny who knew how to pray,

to keep me save from all harm.

I went on my own, and I went astray...

(walk-down) she prayed me back into God's arms, whoa

she prayed me back into God's arms.

When I was just 19 my best friend and I,

were flyin down Whispering Pines Road

When I woke up, my best friend was gone,

and Granny knew just who I owed.

Chorus

last verse-

Now I've got a message to send way over yonder,

Jesus, please let Granny know.

I'm NOT where I'm goin, but I'm on my way...YES I am.

Cause, she showed me the right way to go.

Chorus again and end.

I'll post the real song if there is a thread when I finish tweakin the final tracks. Couple weeks or so. Mostly accoustic guitar and bass and I'm thinking about possibly some lite fiddle, not sure yet.

MichaelCraig -Nice song, like it. Ya a spot for original poems, songs, art would be cool.

I thought about putting this up last night...its an original I've been working on for awhile.

Still needs a little work tho.The guitar goes something like this for the most part, power chords work fine.

-------------------------

B

It Seems to me

F#

Your Whispers

G#

Are a

B

Deadly

G#

Blade

E

Then start over at B and adlib while putting some emotion into it. ;)

------------------------------

It seems To Me

It seems to me

Your whispers

Are A silent deadly blade

And it becomes

No wonder to me

Cause I know

How much you care

And I tried to be

The one for which you'd care

But you patronize

And feed me lies

It's so much

I just can't bear

And It so hard

When you don't know where to turn

It's so hard

See the bridges you burn

I gave to you security

You prefered the opened arm

And someday when you need to be held

Well they might just turn you out

As many times

As You broke my heart

Well I can't count

The tears

But If what comes around

Goes around

Well You'll get what you deserve

And It's so hard

When you don't know where to turn

It's so hard

O' lessons that we learn

Once upon a time

I dreamed

That I'd be holding you

Now it seems

That dreams are dreams

And A nightmare

But were you

I don't know about anybody else here but sometimes a good cry to a very sad song can feel cathartic or put other things in life back into perspective. The question is which song is the absolute saddest... the one that is sure to make you cry every time? I know this is very personal and each individual will have different opinions on this so I was curious to know what other people on this forum?

Here are my top 5 in no particular order:

"Precious Things" by Tori Amos

"Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails and covered by Johny Cash

"Families Can Be Togeather Forever" the LDS hymn.

"The Sound of Goodbye" remixed by Armin Van Burren.

"Mockingbird" by Eminem

What are the 5 saddest songs in your minds?

Another day in paradise by Phil collins

Prayer of the Children by Kurt Bestor and Sam Gordon

The song from the end of land before time.

Sailing the ships of Heaven.

Songs that make me break out in tears, but are not sad;

Amazing grace.

Come thou Fount.

If you can Hie to kolob.

A poor wayfaring man of Grief.

Mad World- Gary Jules (don't pay attention to the video)

This song takes me over. I don't always cry but its powerful to me.

What Sarah Said- Death Cab for Cutie

One of my favorite songs ever

Hurt(Nine Inch Nails Cover)-Jonny Cash (I thin this version is so much better) It almost made me cry when it came on the radio and I heard it for the first time. I was in a good mood then it made me sad. A good sad maybe. Kinda.

YouTube - The World At Large - Modest Mouse (HQ) High Quality

The World At Large-Modest Mouse

It just has a sad tone. The song itself isn't toooooo sad. Just a good song to listen to when your sad or just really calm.

Probably my favorite song in the world

Some other good ones are

perfect - simple plan

where'd you go - Fort Minor

wonderful - everclear

Broken - Seether Ft. Amy Lee

The freshmen - the verve pipe

adams song - blink 182

against all odd - the postal service

trouble - coldplay

the scientist - coldplay

The Background (Third Eye Blind)

Motorcycle Drive By (Third Eye Blind)

God of Wine (Third Eye Blind)

Deep Inside of You (Third Eye Blind)

For some reason, Third Eye Blind can really bring out the emotion in me.

I love Third Eye Blind. I don't really feel those songs are really really sad but they do have some sad overtones. All of those are GREAT songs!

Their self-titled album is golden!

What are the 5 saddest songs in your minds?

These are the saddest I Know of. I've listened to some of the stuff people are posting and HE says "Sad" not "Calm" I guarentee these are some of the saddest songs you will hear, especially the two Ulver songs and the Led Zepplin one. The other two are pretty sad but It's pretty open to interpretation on those two.

"Eos" by Ulver

This is honestly the saddest song I've ever heard. Incredibly Depressing. Listen at your own risk.

"Cleansing" By Wolves in the Throne Room

The first four minutes are absoulutly captivating. The last five are a brutal unloading of Black Metal to counteract the first part.

"No Quarter" By Led Zepplin.

Very depressing, the singing is very sad sounding and the music fits perfectly.

"Veterans of the Thousand Physic Wars (Live version)" By Blue Oyster Cult

The intro is bueatiful and sorrowful. The reason i said Live version is for the most bueatiful, 4 miunte, solo in this version over the studio version.

"The Future Sound of Music" By Ulver

Another incredibly sad sounding Ulver song, not nearly as much as Eos but still, worth a listen on a sad day.
