Christians: tip 20%

My hubby and I always tip at least 20%. Many people don't realize that servers are usually paid less than minimum wage and their tips are supposed to make up the difference. If we leave a tract, we leave quite a bit more than 20%. When we give out tracts on Halloween we give out big candy bars, too. To o any less would be tacky.

In grad school, I had a friend from Scandinavia who wasn't used to tipping. One day we were out eating and I put the tip on the table. That started a conversation about tipping - it turns out she had heard that Americans tip, so she was leaving 25 cents!!!

I tip, but begrudgingly. I'm pretty much like Mr Pink from 'Reservoir Dogs,' "I don't tip. I don't believe in it." I'd prefer not to tip unless service was tres special and it usually isn't. I do tip my hairdresser because I get it colored and I want to encourage her to continue her good work. Everyone else - you don't like small tips, go get another job.

Wow, I am so glad that so many here have such wonderful high paying jobs and that the waiters or waitresses are worth so much less because they are sub-human. That is how it sounds to me.

And kitchen staff do the jobs they can do and were not treated as less by me. In most of the places I worked, I tipped the bussers and staff.

I waited tables to support two children on my own with a deadbeat dad for a father. Thank God for tips. That is how I paid the rent, bought groceries, clothing, paid babysitters and did all the other things that single mothers must do.

Must be nice to have it so great. I have had those religious tracts left and my thought, "what hypocrites." And on Sundays too. After they went to church.

If its the winter time, I tip the pizza guy's the best, coming out to my house, 1am when its -30C out, well he deserves a fine tip, that and I develop a loyalty to pizza places and they come to know me.

Since someone mentioned pizza, I do tip the guy and don't worry about the percentage, mostly because he's gotten in his car and come out to deliver me a meal, often in cruddy weather - service. I won't get delivery if there's snow or ice. I don't want someone to die because I was too lazy to cook something up at home.

You are so right about the wages that restaurants pay. I always tip at least 20%. Most of my time was spent in dinner houses which paid hardly anything per hour so it was mostly tips.

Another thing that many customers do not understand is that nowadays the IRS decides that you made a percentage as tips and that will be your income whether you received it or not. It is based on percentage of sales.

So, theoretically your server may be paying taxes on a tip you never left. Don't you just love the IRS? NOT.

I have mixed feelings about tipping. I give into culture and the situation of servers and leave about %15-20 on average with more if the service was excellent. But I rather wish our restaurant culture didn't make people depend on tips. I saw an article arguing that we should always tip well no matter the quality of the service because "it's not our job to judge the service". (Yes it is!) I will leave a low tip if you aren't doing your job as server. I believe a tip should be a reward for service above and beyond or even a "here's a break".

I wish things changed so restaurant owners would pay servers for their jobs and take the burden off of patrons.

Tipping for mediocre--or even poor--service is something I might do, if led by the Spirit, more as an act of mercy or grace, than as a reward for a job well done. I would not foist this particular aspect of my tipping habits on anyone else, however.

I did not realise that servers in the US don't get minimum wage, with tips expected to fill the bulk of their wages. In the UK, everyone gets at least minimum wage by law (around $10 per hour when converted against current exchange rates), including servers. So, we don't tend to tip as generously here. My wife had to teach me the protocols over there (which I spent ages and a considerable amount of energy arguing with her about in the car on the way home. I don't feel bad - she spends her entire time here complaining about the British weather ).

I still don't agree with the entire concept of tipping. It'd be better if tipping was based solely on level of service, but a pretty 21 year old girl, is far more likely to get higher tips than a balding overweight 50 year old male, even with the same level of service. That's unfair.

Someone mentioned earlier in the thread that customers -should- be the ones to judge the level of service of the servers, but I disagree. That should be the job of the manager, and if someone doesn't do their job, they get fired. Customers should judge the restaurant in general, and if they don't like it, choose to stop giving it their custom.

As long as the food is what I ordered, I dont see how poor quality of the meal itself could be the server's fault.

Glad to hear that. You would be surprised how many customers blame wait staff and do not tip because they didn't like the food even if the service was impeccable.

And if I don't go back to a restaurant because the service is crappy then I'm judging the level of the service of the servers. Or if I complain to management about the service I've received from a server. One can disagree that it's the customer's job to determine how much the server gets paid, but it is certainly my place to judge the service I receive. The service of a server at a restaurant, at a sit down restaurant, is a significant portion of what I'm paying for (and I'm not talking about tipping here).

This is a life lesson most people have yet to learn. Try to differentiate between the problem and the person you're dealing with, if they are not the cause of the problem. It does no good ranting at the waitress over bad food. Sometimes one has to stop and take a breath, especially when dealing with customer service and some poor sap has had the bad luck of getting your 20th call trying to resolve an issue. Nine times out of ten, it's not that person's fault, so why yell at them?

So I tip at least 20% even if the food and service aren't that good. They also have to put up with some real "characters". Being retired we don't eat out that often (it you don't count McDonalds) so, we can always leave more than the twenty.

I don't know of any servers who have to work EVERY evening/weekend/holiday/special occasion. Servers work according to their schedules and more often than not have input on their schedules. I don't feel sorry for them.

Amen. They aren't dragging people off of the street and making them servers. They chose the job, they can deal with the customers and tips or lack thereof.

As my stepfather used to tell me when I complained about work, "Lincoln freed the slaves." You don't like it, go do something else. And if you haven't prepared yourself to 'go do something else,' that's on you.

And if people think I've lived a charmed life, at one point I wound up making BBQ sandwiches for a gas station/store. I didn't like it, I didn't want to do it, but I had to do it at the time for a variety of reasons until I got a job more in line with my education. If you have to take jobs like that, then you suck it up and don't complain and work your way out of it.

The server does not make the food, if you have an issue with it, either send it back or ask to speak to the manager.
