Definitely true for the Orlando Temple.

What's the complaint about?

She says that the building is too high and will ruin the view of all the houses nearby. She says they live "in the country" for a reason. The truth is, that area hasn't been "in the country" for more than a decade. I grew up a mile from the temple site, and it has steadily filled in with McMansions and other upper-mid-class neighborhoods, as well as some commercial development. The view she complains about hasn't existed for a long time, unless she's talking about a view of Fred Meyer.

True in the San Diego Temple area. And the only complaint that I have ever heard about the San Diego Temple was the lights being left on at night made it difficult for people living across the street to sleep. So they now turn the majority off after a certain time at night.

The Temple here in Fort Lauderdale had very little opposition.

I drove past it last night and its absolutely beautiful.

The Church not only built a temple here they are developing Shotgun East Estates a bordering 13-lot residential development of one-acre equestrian lots.

During the public hearing, a resident of the Riverstone development kindly reminded Church representatives of commitments made to the neighborhood including traffic routing, maintenance of the empty land, and lowering the steeple from 115 to 100 feet. A member of the Council commended the Church for its cooperation, which had made the neighborhood very happy. As a gesture of good will, the Church agreed to purchase and install a streetlamp at the roundabout entrance to the neighborhood within 60 days. The ordinances were approved without dissent, and the mayor said with a smile, "Welcome to Davie!"

The appeal was rejected and construction will go forward. There is a lot of hateful backlash on Facebook, which makes me worry about vandalism. There was some during the Boise temple renovation. I'm grateful that it's going to be built, though. There was standing room only at the meeting, 4 out of 5 people supporting the temple.

There was some opposition here in Brigham City, but after it was built and functioning, everybody went back to their daily routines of complaining about something else.

I live by the Oquirrh Mtn. Temple in South Jordan, UT and once the temple was announced property values went up about 20%. Of course many people complained about it, but now they complain that their property values haven't fully rebounded either.

Something I noticed about facebook. It gives a really skewed perception of things. Like if you follow one of those Romney pages it would seem like Romney could win a 2016 Presidential run.

It was otherwise complete, and proxy work needed to be done, but there were problems with complaints about the height of the steeple, etc. (Never mind the massive church directly across the highway with the cross on it.) The steeple and angel were added almost a year later, after a ruling by the state supreme court.

Speaking of the Bostom Temple, here's an interesting fact.

Salt Lake Organizing Committee President Mitt Romney escorted U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy through the Boston Massachusetts Temple during the VIP open house. Just six years earlier, Romney had challenged Kennedy for his veteran seat in the Senate in a heated race many considered too close for comfort.

I remember when complaints arose about the Newport Beach temple. It's very small actually. The chapel next door is actually larger. And it's about two blocks down from a mega church which is really a campus as large as a small college. Their parking lot is HUGE! And yet, people complained about Sunday church traffic at the temple (even though it's closed on Sunday).

I was in Houston when the Houston temple opened. I went through the open house and was struck by how much the LDS Church tried to make even the open house easy on neighbors. Visitors were not allowed to park anywhere near the temple and had to go to a nearby meetinghouse and take a shuttle bus to the temple. I remember reading a lot about that temple in the newspapers that week, and I don't recall reading a single negative comment by neighbors.

Of course, Houston has no zoning codes. You see a skyscraper in the Galleria next to a residential area. When I lived there I was told that your neighbor could legally tear down his house and build a 24-hour gas station next to your house. So maybe the apparent lack of opposition to LDS temples was rooted in Houstonians' apathy toward zoning. (I think the temple is in Spring, TX, not Houston, though.)

The Frankfurt temple in the democracy of West Germany was announced in 1981. Protests, complaints about the steeple being taller than other churches created contentions, discussions about permits, zoning, appeals, meetings, etc. etc. and other vestiges of bureaucracy and took 6 years before the temple was dedicated in 1987. In the meantime, one year later in 1982, the church announced the Freiburg temple in rigidly controlled, communist East Germany. It was dedicated in 1985, two years sooner than the Frankfurt temple!!

In the LDS book “A Marvelous Work and a Wonder” by LeGrand Richards, there is a classic dialogue. As I remember it, a Catholic Priest told the author something like this. “You Mormons do not realize the strength of your position. Catholics and Mormons both agree that Jesus Christ organized his church and endowed it with his Priesthood authority. The Catholics claim to be that same church today. Mormons claimed an apostasy occurred and corrupted the Catholic church,the authority was lost and later restored to the earth through Joseph Smith. It is an either/or situation. If the Catholics did fall into apostasy, then Protestants have no authority either because they broke off from the Catholic church and could not receive it from a failed church. The only way the true church with Priesthood authority could exist today would be by a new restoration from Jesus Christ or by the historical succession of the Catholic church. It can only be either the Catholics or Mormons.
