You guys have a weird idea of Date NIght movies.  Or maybe I have a weird idea of Date Night movies.

Date Night Movies fall into 2 categories:

1.)  Cheesy Romance or Rom-coms

2.)  Shoot 'em up westerns or mafia or anything that has football in it.

So, the perfect Date Night Movie is.... tat-tada... Jerry McGuire.

I was thinking The Terminator would be great.  Or possibly Robocop.  What do you think?

Disturbing fact for the day: If The Terminator were released today, it would garner no worse than a PG-13 rating.

Remember back 30 or so years ago, when President Benson counseled us to avoid R-rated movies? He's sounding more like a prophet all the time. I'm starting to think we should just avoid Hollywood cinema altogether.

Most of the best movies of all time were released between the 40s and the early 60s... The Wild One, Casablanca, East of Eden, Operation Petticoat, The Battle of Algiers, Bad Day at Blood Rock, A Face In The Crowd... I think Hollywood reached its peak around 1957 and began a long, slow decline after, culminating in the current atmosphere of "if I see another superhero movie I may vomit".

You do realize I was joking, right?

Just checking.

Yeah. The point I was making is that if The Terminator were released today, it would be considered fair game as a date movie by many Latter-day Saints, because it would not carry the 'R' rating. Ironic that people complain about a prophet's counsel to avoid 'R'-rated movies, when we should probably be avoiding all or at least most PG-13 movies and many PG, as well. R shouldn't even enter the realm of possibility.

Just my own beliefs and biases. I know many want to excoriate me for them. Let the pile-on begin.

"I'm pretty sure that guy is faking it."

"This will not end well once that train starts moving."

"Maybe you CAN smell kimchee seeping out of a person's pores."

"I did not think that's what a soul train was, but it makes sense."

"Silly muggles, what with banging their heads into platform 9 3/4 and their delayed concussions, wot."

I'm not sure if this movie is Valentine's Day(ish) and some Mormons wouldn't like it since the story somewhat goes against the chastity rules but I really like Prelude to a Kiss with Meg Ryan and Alec Baldwin.

I am sad to say that given the death or temporary hiatus of VidAngel...the choices have really narrowed to:

old movies - Groundhog Day? Casablanca? Studio c?

disney- zootopia

So this should create a niche in the market! I wonder if religious groups could co invest in some movie creation? I wish the religious right would tackle this situation.

Some people have specifically been doing that.  But promotion is a big factor of success.  And they just don't have the budget for it.  Fortunately, they're picking up.  They are beginning to have funding to promote as well as produce.

It's not just going to be a niche market.  There are MANY who want more family friendly entertainment.  And today's Disney and Pixar can't be the only sources.  Some of the time their "family friendly" isn't.  So just start talking about the need to seek them out.  And give support by going to those movies in the theater and buying the DVDs.  I'm not saying that we just spend money on crappy movies because they have a good motivation.  These movies I listed above were really good movies.  They just didn't get the promotion that they needed.  Even so, Fireproof made something like $60 million in the theater.  And the production budget was just a few million.  I liked Mom's night out a lot better.  The production value was higher.  And I found it more entertaining.

Primer. Clean, engaging, cerebral SF-fantasy that you will want to watch at least twice. Watch it on Netflix. Cost $7000 to make. (That's seven thousand dollars.) No idea why it's rated PG-13, unless there is some bad language I completely forgot about.

Okay, yeah, not an ideal date night movie. Don't sit your valentine down to watch Primer, unless she's an irredeemable Geek Gal.

Or don't sit down your husband who is resistant to doing the kid's science homework, let alone sit in a movie of characters who sound like science professors explaining... whatever it was they were trying to explain (I thought I was an irredeemable geek gal until I watched Primer... hah!  But yes, yes, I liked the movie after watching it again when I can follow the story better).
