The only problem I have with this is that some seem to think that if they wished hard enough - that counts for trying.  I also think that whatever we try, no longer counts as trying when we quit trying.   I do not think Bro. Holland was referencing a try when we quit.  Some believe that trying again after falling counts more for success than getting a pass on the initial effort.

Per Pres. Kimball's quote above, "trying" in a gospel sense, in spiritual things, will eventually result in a success.  But we'll never realize that success unless we endure to the end.
