Iggy Posted February 3, 2008 Author Report Posted February 3, 2008 When I got baptised, 41 years ago!- I was terrified. I have always had ear problems, and getting water in my ears caused me great, excruciating pain. The Missionaries gave me ear plugs, but with them in I couldn't hear a thing. They told me that I didn't need to hear-hear. That my soul would hear. I was also terrified of being dropped and drowned. My Home Teacher baptised me. He was taller and heavier than my Dad, and he promised me that there was really no way he could drop me, and there was no way Heavenly Father would let me drown. NOT getting baptised any way. So the big day comes, I step down into the font. Br. Kuzak reaches out his hand to me and when I get to his side he tells me that when he puts his arm around me and squeezed my hand that is the signal to go loose and let him dip me into the water. Okay I understand and then I put in the ear plugs. I can feel his voice thoughout my entire body- Br. Kuzak talks from the tips of his toes anyway- it vibrates through me. Then his arm is around me, he squeezes my hand. I slightly nod my head that I am ready, go loose, Pinch my nose shut with my free hand, and he dips me. Down and up- it was so quick. I didn't even feel the water go over my face. Then he squeezes my hand again - I look up at him and he smiles and points with his chin and mouths - Again. Okay, we do it all again. Don't feel the water either this time. When I look up at him this time, he is smiling and his cheeks are flushed, and he mouths Again. So one more time I am dipped. ONLY this time Br. Kuzak has put his foot over my two feet, and he dips me a bit lower than the other two times. When he brings me out of the water, he hugs me, helps to get the water out of my face and indicates for me to remove the ear plugs. I do, and he turns me around and there is the Bishop and some ladies waiting for me to help me out of the font. I was confirmed that night. It wasn't until the following Sunday that I found out that it isn't normal to dip three times. You need to understand that the neighbors on all sides of my house are Catholic. I thought I was dipped three times in the names of The Father, The Son and The Holy Ghost I was dipped three times because my hair bobbed up the first time. (my hair reached my knees and it was braided. It bobbed up out of the water. I didn't even feel it when Br Kuzak tucked it into my dress at the back. Then the next time my right foot came up out of the water. :D. That is why he stepped on my feet for the third dipping. Pushka - If you really feel like you might lose it once you get into the font - before the baptism, tell the Missionaries your fear, and ask for a blessing of comfort. They will take you into another room, give you the blessing, and then you will be prepared for the baptism. It really is such a short time that you are in the water. If you fear that your foot may pop out of the water, tell whom ever is dipping you to step on your feet. They are barefoot too- and it won't hurt. For Baptisms they allow cameras. At least to the ones I have been to they have. Personally I prefer the shots of the baptisee and baptiser to be sitting down rather than standing up. The outfits are not fashionable, and at least sitting down everyone looks better. Plus they have a lap to put their hands. I never know what to do with my hands when someone wants a pic of me standing up. Jam them into pockets? Grasp them in front of me? Wring them? No one took pics when I was baptised. I am glad they didn't. I was wearing a dress that was about 4 sizes too large and it was saftey pinned around me. At that time they didn't have the females wear the Unisex jumpsuits. Again, I will be there with you in spirit. I am so happy for you! Love you dearly- Iggy. Quote
pushka Posted February 3, 2008 Report Posted February 3, 2008 Oh Iggy! Thanks so much for your entertaining post! It sounds hilarious! LOL :) Thanks for the tips regarding floating feet and hair (my hair's quite short now so that shouldn't be a problem)..the Relief Society President advised me to bend at the knees and to tuck the dress between my legs so that it didn't float either, or else I'd have to go thru it all again...wow! My parents and family are Roman Catholic too, so I love your joke regarding the Father, Son and Holy Ghost! I will make sure to ask for that blessing for comfort...it's hard to describe how frightened I am, but how much I'm trying to be brave..today I saw a girl at church with a floorlength white skirt, and a coat over her chest and shoulders..I thought she was wearing one of the Baptism dresses, and asked if she was being baptised today..I was so embarrassed when I was told that she just had a long, white skirt on and had been baptised years ago aged 8...I was hoping to watch her baptism to give me a reminder of what it's like..I did see a baptism take place about 30 years ago, and I can still picture the dunking bit now.. I spoke to the RS President about what I was gonna wear for the baptism, she didn't suggest a unisex jumpsuit, unfortunately, (I always wear trousers) and she's having to order a large sized dress to accommodate my ample bussoms!! LOL...what a picture that should be!! Thanks for all your best wishes, and for making me have a humourous thought/picture to take with me on the day! :) Quote
Iggy Posted February 3, 2008 Author Report Posted February 3, 2008 Pushka, why don't you have the missionaries go through a dry run with you. In the font with no water - so you know what to expect? Let them know of your fear of water. Also find out if there will be any baptisms before yours so that you can go to them. Girl, I am terrrified of water too. I will not go out on a boat or a ship. When I had to commute from Bremerton WA to Seattle by Ferry, I spent the entire trip below decks in the bathrooms in absolute terror! Lived in Bremerton for a year- so I traveled that way about 520 trips!!! So I KNOW your fear. I won't even walk over a bridge that spans water- I know that when I get half way across, the bridge will fall! Quote
pushka Posted February 3, 2008 Report Posted February 3, 2008 Aww Iggy, you know I'm noticing a lot of similarities between you and I! :) That idea of a dry run is excellent, I'm having a lesson Tuesday night, so will suggest it to the Elders then..There was supposed to be a baptism last weekend, but it didn't take place. I'm curious as to how deep the water is, and the depth of the pool itself. Whenever I've taken my kids (years ago) to the swimming baths, and had to go in with them, I was really afraid walking barefoot on the tiles around the pool, or of coming down the steps of the pool into the water without holding onto something..or someone..I really am afraid as soon as I smell the Chlorine at swimming baths..the pool doesn't have chlorine in it, does it? It should be the same water as what you drink at church. The water shouldn't be deeper than your waist. The font is rather small (I thought). Enough room for the baptisee and the baptizer and room to dip. Remember to hold your nose with a hand. Definitely go through a dry run with the Missionaries. There will be the Priesthood witnesses, who will be right there to help you walk down the steps and back up. If you wish the RS Pres or a friend can be waiting right there to guide you back to the dressing room. The area around the baptistry should be indoor-outdoor carpeting, or tile that has a slip proof finish on it. The helper you have should be giving you a towel as you leave the font- you can always hold the towel so that some of it is on the floor and step on it to dry your feet, then proceed on to the dressing room. Remember, THIS is your event - YOU set the pace. You need to slow the pace enough to dry your feet, then proceed on to the changing room. If you are wearing a dress, make sure the hem is about two inches above your ankles- or you could step on it coming out of the font! Take lots of safety pins with you - use them to "hem up" the dress if need be. Believe me the LDS Church puts safety as a top priority! Even the tile in the kitchens are slip proof. I know, I spilled soapy water and never slipped and I was wearing slip on, slick soled dress shoes. Quote
WillowTheWhisp Posted February 3, 2008 Report Posted February 3, 2008 I'm trying to remember what the font is like at your chapel Pushka because it's a while since I was there. I think the steps come right up at the back and into the changeing area like ours at Blackburn, with no carpeted area. They are slip proof tiles though and I know it's a small font area like our one. Rawtenstall's is a bit bigger. Those one piece jumpsuits only seem to be used in the temples here. I've often wondered why they are not used for ordinary baptisms as they do seem to be very practical but not at all ladylike. The person who baptised me stood on my feet too to hold them down. It's a good idea. I was petrified of water too and worried about the proceedings but like Iggy says it is done so quickly that you don't really have time to realise that you're under before you are up again. The missionary who baptises you will probably explain to you how to hold one of his arms with your hand and leave the other one free to hold your nose when you go under.Because I was so chuffed when I'd actually done it and survived I was all excited about the idea of going down to the temple (we only had the London one back then) and doing it all again for my ancestors. I think I got rid of some of my fear of water by doing hundreds of temple baptisms but I'm still not keen on swimming baths and even get dizzy paddling!I am soooooooooooooo looking forward to coming to your baptism. :) Quote
pushka Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 Iggy and Willow, thanks very much for your additional reassuring posts! I'm sure you all know about what it's like for people with phobias in general, so you can understand my fears..I am going to be brave and go thru with it tho..I forgot to mention the dry run to the elders last night, I must remember on Thursday or Saturday when I see them..or perhaps next week at my Baptism Interview..I've been thru some of those interview questions, so I feel a little better about that part of the procedures...Just have to get the finer details dealt with before the big day! :)Willow, I'm really happy that you're coming to watch my Baptism...at last I can get close to somebody from this website..close as in actually meeting somebody, I'm already close to lots of you via messaging and whatnot, don't want you to get the wrong idea! :) Quote
Moksha Posted February 7, 2008 Report Posted February 7, 2008 You might try visual imagery, like picturing yourself in a tub of luke warm spaghetti. Hope that helps. Quote
Stampede Posted February 7, 2008 Report Posted February 7, 2008 CONGRATS!!!! I'm baptising my wife on the 9th!!!!! Quote
pushka Posted February 7, 2008 Report Posted February 7, 2008 LOL Moksha..that might work, but I'm phobic against worms too, and that there spaghetti looks like a ton of worms!! :) Quote
WillowTheWhisp Posted February 7, 2008 Report Posted February 7, 2008 Just don't think about it and it will be over before you know it. Concentrate on enjoying the day. :)(I still haven't found that flippin yeti!) Quote
pushka Posted February 8, 2008 Report Posted February 8, 2008 LOL Willow! I'm looking forward to seeing that Yeti! You could show it to Desmond's daughter Linda, if she's there on the night!! I've only seen her once, briefly, since returning to church, so I must try and seek her out. Yes, I'm gonna be brave, not think about the practicalities of the baptism too much, and just enjoy the spirit of the event. The Missionaries are going to show me the Baptism area on Sunday. :) Quote
