leem Posted September 12, 2024 Report Posted September 12, 2024 Years ago I worked at the prison in Chino California. I became good friends with the Catholic priest. He, by the way, was the only Chaplin there that would make friends with a Latter-Day Saint. As we talked about our different beliefs I couldn't help but notice the many books on his bookshelf. Books about philosophy, theology etc. Many were extremely difficult to understand. I then knew why many Catholics have a hard time comprehending their religious beliefs. Compared to there's ours is very simple to understand. Quote
Gideon Olsen Posted February 21 Report Posted February 21 I heard that in San Antonio, in what many consider a very traditional Catholic church, hired a brother to not only play the organ, but also to teach music and choir to the school children. I don't think very many Catholic churches would hire a Latter-Day Saint, but maybe this is changing. Quote
prisonchaplain Posted February 22 Report Posted February 22 I served as a chaplain 23 years with the federal system. We had LDS volunteers. After a two-year stint with a private Christian school, I returned to prison chaplaincy, this time with the state. To my surprise, the host of the Sunday morning service was the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints. The service seemed well attended. The afternoon had an Evangelical Bible study, and the evening service was hosted by a progressive church. So, what's a Pentecostal chaplain to do? I started having my service on Mondays. The LDS volunteers asked me how I was feeling, and I told them to relax, that I was here to facilitate and support, not to change the schedule. Here we are, two years later, with the same schedule. HaggisShuu Posted February 23 Report Posted February 23 I think it's becoming a more common talking point now, that our simpler theology just does a better job at resolving "hard questions" like the problem of evil, Gods nature etc. Quote

It's super easy. Barely an inconvenience. SilentOne 1 Quote
Gideon Olsen Posted February 28 Report Posted February 28 To update the issue noted in San Antonio, some members of the church were not comfortable about the hiring of a Latter-Day Saint. But Bishop Lopes said that reviewed the teachings of their church, and it was allowed. Bishop Lopes is supporting the Latter-Day Saint and ignoring any complaints from the Catholics. Not sure how this will end up, but interesting to see a bishop of the Catholic church take this stand. Quote

BTW, when I lived in Utah, there was a lady in my ward who also played the organ for one of the local Catholic churches. She did it during their Wednesday night masses. Quote
