Marie23, the Lord knows your heart. That is what matters. He knows if you are humble and repentant. If you have some time today, you can research at lds.org what it means to have a "broken heart and a contrite spirit." You are a daughter of God and He loves you more than you know. Your bishop will help you make things right with Him.

Just posted another one. More introspective. I Would Not Hear I also plan on focusing more on the Book of Mormon again.

Question about D.C. 84

Would it help if I quoted a prophet or apostle to add authority to the statement or can the Holy Spirit witness to you whether it is true? -
Question about D.C. 84
skalenfehl replied to howdeedoo's topic in Learn about The Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints
The times of the gentiles is not yet fulfilled. Isaiah prophecies of this as does Nephi and also Jesus Christ teaches the Nephites more during his visit at Bountiful. Moroni has seen our day where every last church has become polluted. The Doctrine and Covenants also contains more revelations about the coming scourge, which will leave the land (USA) desolate. D&C 112 23 Verily, verily, I say unto you, darkness covereth the earth, and gross darkness the minds of the people, and all flesh has become corrupt before my face. 24 Behold, vengeance cometh speedily upon the inhabitants of the earth, a day of wrath, a day of burning, a day of desolation, of weeping, of mourning, and of lamentation; and as a whirlwind it shall come upon all the face of the earth, saith the Lord. 25 And upon my house shall it begin, and from my house shall it go forth, saith the Lord; D&C 45 26 And in that day shall be heard of wars and rumors of wars, and the whole earth shall be in commotion, and men’s hearts shall failthem, and they shall say that Christ delayeth his coming until the end of the earth. 27 And the love of men shall wax cold, and iniquity shall abound. 31 And there shall be men standing in that generation, that shall not pass until they shall see an overflowing scourge; for a desolating sickness shall cover the land. The prophet John Taylor saw in a vision concerning the coming scourge: -

Question about D.C. 84
skalenfehl replied to howdeedoo's topic in Learn about The Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints
Neither the city New Jerusalem nor the temple of New Jerusalem has been built. A series of events will take place first: 1. Times of the Gentiles fulfilled 2. Desolating scourge 3. Gathering of elect etc -
That is correct.

Jacob 5 does a perfect job in explaining the distinctions between literal Israel and adopted Israel. Jesus Christ also declared: 3 Ne 16:13 But if the Gentiles will repent and return unto me, saith the Father, behold they shall be numbered among my people, O house of Israel. Furthermore, the words spoken by Joseph Smith when dedicating the Kirtland temple: D&C 109:59 We ask thee to appoint unto Zion other stakes besides this one which thou hast appointed, that the gathering of thy people may roll on in great power and majesty, that thy work may be cut short in righteousness. 60 Now these words, O Lord, we have spoken before thee, concerning the revelations and commandments which thou hast given unto us, who are identified with the Gentiles. 61 But thou knowest that thou hast a great love for the children of Jacob, who have been scattered upon the mountains for a long time, in a cloudy and dark day. 62 We therefore ask thee to have mercy upon the children of Jacob, that Jerusalem, from this hour, may begin to be redeemed; Great topic, btw!

need some help from some Mormon History buffs
skalenfehl replied to mormonhistory's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
That's a pretty vague request. Have you read the six book series by B. H. Roberts, "A Comprehensive History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints"? Might be a good start. There are probably already plenty of online sources and resources. -
I don't know if it's been mentioned, but it would be nice to see a section dedicated to indexing and having support and maybe a FAQ for beginners like me who are just getting started. https://familysearch.org/?cid=ldshp-fs-leftnav

Anddex, you said it better than me. Thank you for taking the time to share this. I am also learning by experience that it isn't charitable of me to share or expound things beyond that which people generally can or are willing to accept (Alma to Zeezrom). We all have a certain degree of light within us and it grows or diminishes based on the heed we give to it. Likewise, it is also uncharitable of me to not to share or expound things to someone who is more than ready and willing to accept it. And sometimes, as in your example, it is returned with greater light. And we are edified. Thank you for taking the time to reply to my comment.

Garments
skalenfehl replied to free_thinker's topic in Learn about The Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints
As one who attends the temple frequently to do vicarious work in temple endowment sessions and often in what is called intiatiatories, I can testify that the temple garments are placed upon us to be a protection to us until our missions here on earth are finished. They are essentially the same priesthood rites performed throughout scriptural history. Exodus 40: 12 And thou shalt bring Aaron and his sons unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and wash them with water. 13 And thou shalt put upon Aaron the holy garments, and anoint him, and sanctify him; that he may minister unto me in the priest’s office. 14 And thou shalt bring his sons, and clothe them with coats: 15 And thou shalt anoint them, as thou didst anoint their father, that they may minister unto me in the priest’s office: for their anointing shall surely be an everlasting priesthood throughout their generations. 16 Thus did Moses: according to all that the Lord commanded him, so did he. This is still done today. I testify from many personal experiences of being protected that this is true. Edit: All who are anointed with the Aaronic Priesthood are "sons" of Aaron. -
Garments
skalenfehl replied to free_thinker's topic in Learn about The Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints
My father in law has. I have as well. Keep in mind that the garments themselves aren't magical or mysterious. It's not the material itself that is a protection (our garments do not cover our entire bodies) so much as one's worthiness and obedience to the covenants upon which such blessings and protections are predicated. That said, I my life has been spared on multiple occasions as have limbs, where surely I would have lost them and/or my life in a head on collision, in construction accidents, etc. Once my father in law was operating an electric circular saw when while cutting a board, the saw jammed and kicked back while the blade was still at full RPMs. The spinning blade ripped his shirt but didn't touch his garments. In such a scenario, the blade would surely have sliced open his abdomen. -
I can certainly respect PC's stance as well. He is a shepherd in his church and a light to many. I am sure he is charitable towards all. I don't know any LDS who spend time visiting people in prison, which our Savior specifically admonished his saints to do, besides visiting the sick and afflicted.

I am reminded of the relationship between father and son in the LDS film, Testaments. The son had aspirations and desires to apprentice with Kohor and wanted his father's approval. His father could not approve, but he did express happiness for his son, though he knew that his son's happiness would only be temporary. I would congratulate the couple. I'm not going to judge them. I have many gay friends and couples and I love them as I love anyone else and as Christ loves them. They don't subscribe to my beliefs but they are respectful of them. I can genuinely return the kindness. It is their choice to live as they will. Perhaps they know it is only temporary and they've accepted it. Maybe they believe there is nothing after this life and they want to be as happy as they know how now. Beliefs vary widely from person to person and couple to couple, gay or straight. Mormon had a perfect love for all, which I find amazing considering he was never remotely hardened by war. And yet he knew that he could not recommend any to God, except his own son Moroni. We should be so charitable toward all.

4th of July Google (US) Does it bother anyone else?
skalenfehl replied to Gretchen's topic in General Discussion
I'm not so sure. The election was a sham. Congress is a sham. Obama is a sham. The NDAA is a sham, the Patriot Act, etc, etc. etc. Our founding fathers are turning over and over in their graves, I'm sure. But it it is as was prophecied. The fullness of the Gentiles is coming to an end. All I can think about is Captain Moroni, Helaman, Lehi, Teancum, the 200+ stripling warriors...today we're a lazy, idle and indifferent country. Half of Americans are deceived and most of the the other half are asleep. But what do I know. I pray for Egypt. Who can say that someone worse than Morsi doesn't take over? -
It is when one submits to temptation that brings condemnation. Remember, even our Savior was tempted often. But He never heeded those temptations. D&C 20:21 Wherefore, the Almighty God gave his Only Begotten Son, as it is written in those scriptures which have been given of him. 22 He suffered temptations but gave no heed unto them. Don't allow yourself to feel guilty for being tempted. It is when you give in to temptation where fault lies. Jesus Christ commanded us to pray always that we never enter into temptation. Doctrine and Covenants 93:49 49 What I say unto one I say unto all; pray always lest that wicked one have power in you, and remove you out of your place. Doctrine and Covenants 31:12 12 Pray always, lest you enter into temptation and lose your reward. Doctrine and Covenants 20:33 33 Therefore let the church take heed and pray always, lest they fall into temptation; 3 Nephi 18:15 15 Verily, verily, I say unto you, ye must watch and pray always, lest ye be tempted by the devil, and ye be led away captive by him. 3 Nephi 18:18 18 Behold, verily, verily, I say unto you, ye must watch and pray always lest ye enter into temptation; for Satan desireth to have you, that he may sift you as wheat.

I'm not offended by their use of cute canines. I'm more offended that it is a true representation of America today. Americans should be following the Egyptians' example right now. -
What Manual would you like to study next year

I would LOVE to see manuals like: Lehi Nephi King Benjamin Abinadi Alma Alma Helaman Ammon Captain Moroni Nephi Mormon Moroni etc. They were also prophets with power and authority. -
Nobody likes to think that they are wicked. The reality is, we all are. I appreciate my Savior's definition: Ether 4 7 And in that day that they shall exercise faith in me, saith the Lord, even as the brother of Jared did, that they may become sanctified in me, then will I manifest unto them the things which the brother of Jared saw, even to the unfolding unto them all my revelations, saith Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Father of the heavens and of the earth, and all things that in them are. 15 Behold, when ye shall rend that veil of unbelief which doth cause you to remain in your awful state of wickedness, and hardness of heart, and blindness of mind, then shall the great and marvelous things which have been hid up from the foundation of the world from you—yea, when ye shall call upon the Father in my name, with a broken heart and a contrite spirit, then shall ye know that the Father hath remembered the covenant which he made unto your fathers, O house of Israel. 17 Therefore, when ye shall receive this record ye may know that the work of the Father has commenced upon all the face of the land. Until we have rent the veil of unbelief, which separates us as Telestial creatures from our Maker, we will be continually wicked. Nephi understood this and wrote a psalm about it. My two cents.

I'm not from Utah, but I moved to N. Utah a couple decades ago and it was definitely a culture shock. I understand the Utah Mormon thing. I think it's more of a Zarahemla Bubble.

To the OP. You'll come to this as you read Second Nephi: Chapter 9 23 And he commandeth all men that they must repent, and be baptized in his name, having perfect faith in the Holy One of Israel, or they cannot be saved in the kingdom of God. 24 And if they will not repent and believe in his name, and be baptized in his name, and endure to the end, they must be damned; for the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, has spoken it. 25 Wherefore, he has given a law; and where there is no law given there is no punishment; and where there is no punishment there is no condemnation; and where there is no condemnation the mercies of the Holy One of Israel have claim upon them, because of the atonement; for they are delivered by the power of him. 26 For the atonement satisfieth the demands of his justice upon all those who have not the law given to them, that they are delivered from that awful monster, death and hell, and the devil, and the lake of fire and brimstone, which is endless torment; and they are restored to that God who gave them breath, which is the Holy One of Israel. 27 But wo unto him that has the law given, yea, that has all the commandments of God, like unto us, and that transgresseth them, and that wasteth the days of his probation, for awful is his state! Those peoples who do not have the law; who have never known of Christ, cannot sin. They are as little children and are under no condemnation.
