  1. All I see is this thread. No forum. I'm glad you posted this though because I am making it a goal to actually read through all of the lessons before the lessons are given on Sunday.
  2. I do doubt that eschewing the wearing of the temple garment for the sake of Scottish tradition in wearing kilts is the same as wanting to keep long hair for the sake of Native American tradition. There is nothing wrong with cultural traditions as long as they do not move you away from God. Long hair does inherently do that. It could be the answer is, "it depends on where your son is called to serve." Definitely ask the Missionary Department, but also, be careful not to simply ask the person who answers the phone. They're the front end, and wouldn't have the authority to answer the question definitely. That person would probably just voice their opinion, saying of course he would, when that's not always the case.
  3. Really? Wow. . . I'm turning 31 at the end of May. I suddenly feel excluded. . .
  4. Wingnut, I do not perceive bouncing breasts and nipples. . . Also, your previous comments led me to believe that it was ONLY the sci fi element the prevented you from seeing the film. Bethie, interesting thoughts on Avatar in your blog! Thanks for sharing. :) Oh, I don't know if the tentacle thing did happen in the original take of the "mating scene", but I was conjecturing that they probably would after the foreplay and then it'd be alien porn which is why they didn't show it. Edit: Dravin, my sister is like that too. I tried to get her to watch Babylon 5. I know for a fact that if she were to give it a chance she'd like it, but she got annoyed with my enthusiasm and dug in her heels. Edit again: Anyone else who has seen the movie notice how the avatars have five fingers but the Na'vi have four?
  5. Ehywah (spelling?) is the Na'vi God. And is literally in the planet. Everything on that planet is connected together. So really, you could say he found God in the forest and with the Na'vi because they are able to directly link up to their God. There are many aspects to the movie, and many messages. It would be foolish to over focus on one or to attempt to see a message that's not there, and say, "this is the moral of the story!" Such declarations would be inaccurate. (this paragraph directed at everyone, not just Beefche's comment above.)
  6. All that Na'vi boobage? Well, let me just say that the Na'vi are NOT mammals! Hence the very small "breast" thing for the ladies, and the only reason those were included was so that we humans can easily identify with the genders. The original Na'vi concept was less boobtastic and even then, they're SMALL! And they DID NOT JIGGLE! Real breasts jiggle! Anyone see jiggling boobs in that film? Nope! Because they're not actually breasts! Which also means that there are no nipples either. The mating scene? Bah, they were barely in the beginnings of the foreplay part of mating. You know that if they showed the whole thing Natiri and Jake Sully would've connected with one another using those tentacle things at the end of their braid, and then things would've gotten hot. I really like Kids-In-Mind.com, I use it all the time, but their sex rating is too high. It should be halved. I believe it's too high because of the misconception of Na'vi breasts. I believe the reason why we, who have already viewed the movie, are so passive about the swearing is because it was not gratuitous, and I don't recall one f-word in any form. Is the storyline predictable? Yes, but it does not matter. There's not one original idea in Avatar, but it's put together cohesively and in a manner that hadn't been done before. In the original Star Wars there wasn't an original idea either, but it didn't matter. You cared about the characters. It's the same with Avatar. I didn't find it long. I saw it with my husband in 3-D and got a migraine. I saw it again in 3-D with him and we took our six year old, and got a migraine. It was worth both migraines. Oh yes. Our daughter wants to see it again. She was able to sit through it just fine. We'll probably see it again, but my husband is going to make us do it in 2D, stupid migraines. I found the story to be very personalized. The characterization was done so well I was moved to tears. So were my husband and Hazel (the kiddo). There was foreshadowing all over the movie so you could figure things out before anything happened. So, if you're all up in arms about predictability it's because you were paying attention and figured things out. The sci fi parts are in the background. You won't see us today using crazy jargon to explain what we are doing with computers and you won't find that in Avatar. It's not in your face, it's just there. The world is a different world, low gravity (which is why you can fall from a great height and not die), and the travel time from earth to the planet is 6 years. So, really, other than that and knowing that they have the technology to transfer the self from one body into the other is all that's needed, and all that's presented. So, Wingnut and any other anti-science fiction peeps, don't let the sci fi aspects keep you from seeing it. It's all in the background. Not too many years ago what we are doing today was considered science fiction such as mobile phones.
  7. I'm confused. I thought institute was already for adults. . . I remember going to institute near Yuba College. I didn't go to any of the single activities since I'm married and that'd be weird, but I went to the classes. . . I'm 30 now, so why shouldn't I still be able to go when I turn 31 this year if I have the time or inclination to do so?
  8. Avram I have never heard that before. I believe that to be incorrect. The Holy Ghost and the Spirit are the same. The only difference is that as members of the Church was CAN have the Holy Ghost aka the Spirit as a constant companion. Maybe what you're Stake President meant is what Just_A_Guy was talking about which is the difference between having the availability of the Holy Ghost and then receiving the gift to have the ability to have the Holy Ghost with you as a constant companion. Justice, I don't think there is a difference. Christ talked about the Comforter, as in the role of the Holy Ghost as being a comforter (the Holy Ghost has many roles, such as confirming spiritual truths). Christ himself comforted the apostles, thus they would have no need to feel the comfort that the Holy Ghost can bring. However, it was something they did need to experience so they can speak of it to others and understand the comforting capacity of the Holy Ghost. Christ told them that they would receive the Comforter after he was gone as a way to comfort them with their parting, as in they would not be left bereft of the security and comfort Christ's presence gave them.
  9. Not directly but that's the message I am getting out of this. It's all in how you ask the question. Joseph Smith did not say, "I'm going to follow this protestant faith until you tell me otherwise" he asked, "which church is correct that I may join them." Completely different attitudes. This is where the witness is received after the trial of your faith comes in. Following the direction to test your faith under those circumstances would not potentially harm you or your family, unlike signing away your house which could leave you homeless.
  10. Why would anyone have a problem with someone wanting their own personal revelation about something that a Bishop, or even a General Authority, asks us to do? We are encouraged to study things out and to gain our own personal revelations. Giving over one's property or home would be difficult. Needing additional revelation and some time to come to grips with what is being asked is not a bad and does not mean that you do not support church authorities.
  11. I third it. Reasons why I get migraines are as follows: My defective back - chiropractic helps greatly. Water - I didn't drink enough. Sleep - was always sleep deprived, even if it's only by 30 minutes a night it cumulates. Hormones - it never fails. A few days before my period and during I get migraines. Excedrin - I used to take Excedrin frequently, about 2 to 3 times a day, only to discover that I moved from getting migraines for other reasons and fixing them with Excedrin to I was getting migraines from the caffeine withdrawal when the Excedrin wore off. Excessive stress - I didn't manage my stress well, and it would turn into a migraine which makes life more stressful which would cause more migraines, and a nice vicious loop starts. I had to learn some relaxation techniques and how to manage stress effectively.
  12. I have heard a few people on here saying that the Holy Ghost wasn't given to mankind until after it descended upon Christ in the form of a dove. That supposition never made sense to me and now I know why. 1 Nephi 10 17 And it came to pass after I, Nephi, having heard all the words of my father, concerning the things which he saw in a vision, and also the things which he spake by the power of the Holy Ghost, which power he received by faith on the Son of God—and the Son of God was the Messiah who should come—I, Nephi, was desirous also that I might see, and hear, and know of these things, by the power of the Holy Ghost, which is the gift of God unto gall those who diligently seek him, as well in times of hold as in the time that he should manifest himself unto the children of men. 18 For he is the same yesterday, to-day, and forever; and the way is prepared for all men from the foundation of the world, if it so be that they repent and come unto him. 19 For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost, as well in these times as in times of old, and as well in times of old as in times to come; wherefore, the course of the Lord is one eternal round. 20 Therefore remember, O man, for all thy doings thou shalt be brought into judgment. 21 Wherefore, if ye have sought to do wickedly in the days of your probation, then ye are found unclean before the judgment-seat of God; and no unclean thing can dwell with God; wherefore, ye must be cast off forever. 22 And the Holy Ghost giveth authority that I should speak these things, and deny them not. 13. Yeah, but, there are some people who made promises to be together on earth. My mother met a woman whose patriarchal blessing said that she had promised to wait to meet the person she promised herself to in the life before this. She met her husband whose patriarchal blessing said the same thing. I have also had a personal witness that my parents wanted to be together here on earth and that all of my siblings wanted them as parents and that we all wanted to be together. I knew that I wanted to marry my husband, that I wanted him for forever. But I didn't know it was okay to marry him until I got a peaceful feeling while praying about it. Just the prayer was stressful and scary since I was sure I was going to get a no way in hell sort of answer since my husband was and is, not a member. But I got a green light. Basically, I don't think you know your choice is right until you pray about it and get a stamp of approval from the Lord.
  14. Have you ever stopped to consider that the Spirit feels different when you are no longer afflicted by a disorder? You must also understand that some people are given antidepressants when that is not the actual problem. For example, many people with ADD/ADHD are diagnosed with depression when really they are depressed because they can't manage to maintain focus enough to be reliable at work or in their social lives. Their depression is a result of ADD, not the cause of the problem. Also, depression and anxiety are often mixed together, and so only one aspect of the problem is fixed or addressed. There are about six types of anxiety and depression, and rare it is for someone to only have anxiety or to only have depression. Not only that but many people fix the physical problem but ignore the psychological and social effects the physical problem had on their lives. I'm not saying that medication is always the answer, but I am saying that it's NOT as simple as taking antidepressants = not being able to feel the spirit. Such a thing is simply not true and I fear perpetuation of such an idea would stop people from getting the help that they need.
  15. Now, no feeling bad about posting the article. It has been a long time since been deeply depressed. I remember what it was like and I am so sorry you were in so deep. I am glad that you are doing better though, if not perfect. I hope and pray that you will continue to do better. *hugs*
  16. CBT = Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in case you didn't know.
  17. It doesn't bother me either way. It's mostly the same and isn't gratuitous.
  18. I have, depending on the dispute. But in this case, the SIL told the Bishop this lie, so that's what is odd to me.
  19. The trick is having the self awareness to catch the early signs of depression. It took me a long time to be self aware enough to do that.
  20. It depends on whether or not you are on the correct medication. If you are in zombie mode then you need to adjust the dose or try a different medication. I am friends with people in the church, and have known others, who are on appropriate medication for them that are able to feel the spirit without issue. In fact, in some cases the meds helped them be more receptive to the Spirit since their minds were no longer hampered by their disorder.
  21. It sounds to me that the article is confusing depression with feeling down. When you are actually depressed you are not able to think clearly and you see everything in the negative which really screws your ability to think rationally, let alone constructive rumination. Oh yeah, depressed people can ruminate but about the wrong things or in the wrong way. Oh yeah, depressed peopled can intellectualize but they start the process in the wrong place since everything is skewed to be negative. Using logic and reason to get out of it only works if you aren't in deep. Anything beyond that, the mud has you suctioned in, and takes help from others (and possibly meds) to pull you back out again. Like a tire stuck in the mud. Sometimes you can bull through it, other times you can't. It all depends on how deeply in you are. Anyone trying to make depression out to be a good thing are not displaying intelligent thought.
  22. No, of course not. But that required running the airplanes into the ground, therefore I see 9/11 as bombs being dropped from the air and exploding on impact as opposed to exploding in the air which is what I am essentially asking about. bcguy, was that from wikipedia? threepercent, can you explain the wave form in English? I am still learning the mathematical language (actively working on it right now) and you lost me a bit there. traveler, think you could explain this, "or in many cases alter semiconductor operations especially if they involve low voltage switching," in more detail?
  23. That's interesting. So theoretically a terrorist doesn't have to hurt us from the ground.
  24. No, I didn't. I pointed out that my seminary teacher taught that God worships his God, but it doesn't make sense for reasons I pointed out above, and it doesn't mean that it's true. It just means that a few people followed your same logic train to come to that conclusion even though it is not official doctrine. So, no, I was not lying, because I did not make a claim that God worshiping his God was official doctrine when there is nothing from an LDS source that supports such a claim. I was merely attempting to reiterate that people are perpetuating an idea as though it were doctrine. I once had a Sunday School teacher say that when Christ returns he'll be bringing food with him. I said that didn't make sense because why have the need for such a large food storage if that were going to be the case? She admitted that it wasn't doctrine just her opinion. However, she had spoken of it in Sunday School as though it *were* doctrine and would have continued on if I hadn't said anything. Maybe I did a bad job of conveying my support of Snow in this. Can I blame the lousy school laptop I was using this afternoon? It was terribly frustrating to use.
  25. It is my opinion that people take the King Follet Sermon and make their own conclusions on what it took for our Heavenly Father to become an exalted man. Such persons suppose that it must have been the same as us, and therefore conclude that God worships his God who worships his God who worships his God and so on and so forth in infinite number, with no beginning and no end. I have known people who believe this, and I was even taught this in a seminary lesson. I asked, so then what started it? Of course, my teacher was unable to answer that question. It didn't make sense because it sounded like one infinite linear line as opposed to a circle or round. It didn't make sense because our God is supposed to be the Most High God with no other God BEFORE him. There was a God after him, Jesus Christ, who was a god before he came to earth and was exalted afterwards. There is also another God, the Holy Ghost who is a part of the Godhead. If one is not a god then how can you be a part of the Godhead? It is my opinion that matter is infinite, as well as nothing, since the two are opposites. One can not exist without the other. But the idea of an infinite number of higher Gods than ours in one infinite linear line makes no sense to me. I find it illogical. I have not found any shred of evidence that our God worships a higher God. I have simply found conjecture, speculation, various interpretations on the words of the Prophets, but nothing official from the church. Is it possible I am wrong? Yes. Afterall, ideally a child turns to his/her father and mother on matters and they are the ones that are revered and honored, not someone elses father which is why our God is the Most High God, but only to US. Maybe we do have a Heavenly Grandfather and a Heavenly Grandmother. I do not know. The Spirit has not confirmed to me that God worships his God, though I have asked about the matter. I simply get a stupor of thought, yet someone else claimed that the Spirit told them the opposite. Whatever the case may be, we all need to be flexible until further revelation reveals to us how it actually is. If I am right then those who disagree must be humble and accept that they were wrong in their speculations. If I am wrong I must do the same. The simple answer is, it is not canon belief that God worships a higher God. It is not official. Until then, we need to make due with what we have, and be respectful of the fact that not everyone will come to the same conclusions whilst reading the same material.
