  1. My ex-husband was abusive, and when I went to therapy myself, he came to one session and immediately hated my therapist and refused to go to joint counseling. My therapist also could see that he was abusive, and eventually helped me to realize that it was best to just get out before I became pregnant, as if there were a child, I wouldn't be able to cut off all contact completely, and the cycle of abuse would have been passed down to another generation. He started out like the OP's husband at first, then the moment we were married, he changed for the worst, and while the abuse wasn't physical at the time, if I stayed with him, it would have gotten to that point, and there's a chance he could have killed me or triggered a miscarriage if he beat me while pregnant. I haven't had any contact with him in the 9 years since I filed for divorce, and I thank God I got out alive.
  2. I'm another one who has had fewer migraines since switching to the new light bulbs. I see no need to get out the tin foil hat, as I'm not into conspiracy theories at all.
  3. As a Californian, I think In n Out has the best burgers for fast food, and my favorite way to get a Double Double or cheeseburger there is "animal style." My favorite thing to dip fries in is just ketchup, or on rare occasions, ranch dressing. No, I don't eat that food all the time, as I tend to stick to a healthy diet most of the time, and I'm also a gym rat. To me, those Utah scones are known as fry bread, and I've had them at different places sold as the base to "Indian" tacos, Indian being Native American. When I think of a scone, I think of a dense pastry with fruit, served with clotted cream and jam.
  4. I don't think religion in general will become extinct, even if people decide not to go to a building to practice their beliefs. If other governments decided to openly persecute a religion by killing believers, there will be plenty of people who would be willing to become martyrs. It's what has happened in the past, and in some cases, it still happens today.
  5. With other Christian denominations, someone could chose a different church within the denomination instead of their neighborhood church if they want to, and they don't need anybody's permission to do so. People also get to chose the time they go, as all service times are posted outside the church.
  6. Congratulations!! When my parents got married, fondue pots were the big wedding gift item, so they got several of those pots.
  7. One problem with debit cards is that if the numbers are stolen, one's checking account might be cleaned out before the theft is noticed. Because of this, I either use cash, or write checks with a pen that has wash resistant ink. I also check my account pretty much daily, so if something seemed odd, I'd be able to notify the bank and the police of any fraud before significant damage happened to my account.
  8. I think it's more likely that with our 24 hour news and the internet, we hear about these disasters as they happen, and people were able to be warned about the tsunami.
  9. I agree with the decision, as the First Amendment does protect free speech even if the speech is something most people don't agree with. After all, if groups like the WBC lose their free speech rights, then there's a risk that our rights could be taken away as well. I agree with the quote, "I might not agree with what you have to say, but I will defend to the death, your right to say it." They showed up outside a local high school that has a GLBT club, and the counter protest turned out to be much larger than their protest. Personally, I think it's better to ignore them as they thrive on the publicity.
  10. It seems like this was an aftershock to the 7.2 quake, only shallower and closer to the city than the original earthquake. My thoughts and prayers are with those affected.
  11. That's true, considering that Prohibition didn't work, as it caused more problems than it was designed to solve.
  12. I've had them since I was a teenager, and for me they run in my family as both my mom and brother have had them. My brother even has a prescription for when they hit, but I'm just fine for now with the generic Excedrin migraine pills taken with a caffeinated soda.If I take that as soon as I get the aura of a migraine starting, it stops it from getting worse. My main trigger is heat combined with humidity in the summer, even if I'm drinking enough water. It's one reason why I love where I live, as hot, humid days are extremely rare, as the heat we do get is a dry heat.
  13. In a way, it's safer to have Mexican citizens serve missions in Mexico, especially in the border areas because of the drug cartel violence.
  14. I'm not LDS, but I would think most people in general would understand divorcing an abusive spouse, especially before there were any children. I'm divorced because my ex-husband was emotionally abusive, and if I didn't get out when I did, the abuse certainly would have turned physical. I also got out before there were any children, which is a good thing because I was able to completely cut him out of my life once the divorce was finalized. I was only married for almost 10 months when I filed, so I got a paralegal to help me with the paperwork, and they served him. I was fortunate that he signed the papers, as he had a major fit when I told him I was divorcing him. I actually had a restraining order issued against him, that's how scary it was, since the most dangerous time for someone who is abused is when they're leaving the abuser. As he signed the papers, there was no need for a court battle, and the divorce was finalized without having to go to the county courthouse.
  15. I would think that in cases of ectopic pregnancy, or if the fetus was already dead or not likely to survive long after birth, then those are medical reasons for an abortion. Another medical issue is if the pregnancy would kill the mother who has other children who need her, so she might chose her living children over the fetus. [sarcasm]I guess by that logic, a woman who has had a miscarriage shouldn't be baptized if she wanted to convert, as she participated in a spontaneous abortion.[/sarcasm]
  16. I also agree. I'm also able to watch movies and not have any issues of any kind. Now, if there's a movie that is really bad, then I would just walk out or return the DVD without finishing it.
  17. That is a company-wide policy, as the owners are Evangelical Christians.
  18. One thing I do know is that people are simply born gay, and that not all homosexuals were molested as children. On the other hand, if someone was molested and they got counseling to deal with it, some behaviors do change. Most pedophiles are actually heterosexual, and the only reason why they molest children of the same gender is that they were available at the time.
  19. I watched it in my 4th grade class as there was already a TV in the room, and the thing I remember was that you could hear a pin drop and the teacher crying.
  20. The way I see it, not everyone who is LDS is able to serve a mission at 19 or 21. As far as those individuals with that laptop, if they didn't have nametags, chances are they weren't LDS missionaries. I sincerely doubt some "anti" would dress like a missionary in an attempt to discredit missionaries, as I've posted in another thread, most who leave the LDS church do leave it alone, but they often resign or have their names removed so the church would leave THEM alone. I've met people who I had no idea were LDS because they never once said anything remotely negative about the church.
  21. If the fetuses were healthy, then that's a problem especially if the abortion was against the mother's wish. Even if someone decided they didn't want a baby, they could chose adoption instead, as there are plenty of married couples who aren't able to have children, and who would love to adopt. I'm actually pro-choice, especially in medical cases where the fetus would die soon after birth, or be stillborn. Another medical reason for abortion, usually in the first trimester, is in cases where the mother will die if the pregnancy continues, especially if she already has children who need their mother. In cases of ectopic pregnancy, abortion is the only option as a ruptured tube is dangerous, not just for the embryo.
