  1. We can do better by ourselves. I have always felt there is a strong difference in the way women and men write. If you start watching for it, I bet you can tell the difference without even breaking a sweat. Its not the words people use. Its the way they use them. And no I cant tell you how that is but it is different. Test it for yourself.
  2. Sometimes I think its a good thing Joseph Smith had faults. If not consider what would have happened. He would have become a challenger to Jesus status because he and Christ would have been the only TWO people ever born who were without sin. Even it were conceded that he may have had childish sins in his youth we would have made him into much more a person to worship instead of a prophet of God. We do not worship him for good reason. This just makes it easier to stay clear of that problem.
  3. I do have a cousin here in Idaho that uses it for her cancer pain. Anything that helps her is good as far as I am concerned. She is not a member of the church however so for her there is no question of doctrine. I know there are a lot of people who do use for similar reasons honestly.
  4. If all ideas for change comes only from the top then how do we learn to rule ourselves? I do not believe that general authorities are only interested in their own ideas. I remember a time when Elder Haight asked my niece who had just come home from a mission in Denmark, if she had any ideas on how to improve the mission work there. He was in charge of it but he wanted input, even from a young recently returned missionary. The thing is how to approach giving ideas. Do we do it by petitions or letters or only through prayer? We are not a popular vote church. Still we believe in knowledge and learning to lead ourselves dont we? There is an answer there and its not just assuming that it will just occur to someone in authority. Recently I read of a general authority who said that they do consider ideas that are given to them. Dont remember who said it or exactly what was said or the context.
  5. Around here they do the main roads. I mean really main like the road to Burley, the nearest town of any size at all, and that is it. Staying home is good. Very good. lol.
  6. If you get 4 wheel do not pretend like there is no snow or ice out there. Best way to get in an accident. Front wheel drive does make it easier to drive in snow. Very best advice is remember its slick out there and you are macho man, able to fly down the road as if its the middle of the summer. That is better than any kind of vehicle although I am partial to staying home myself.
  7. Congrats! What a nice blessing for the new year. :)
  8. I have been told that by certain members of my family and worse even. One even made a facebook account to yell at me and call me satans follower then he deleted the account. Needless to say that brother is not my best friend. It did make me laugh and I made sure to repost the private message in its entirety on my public wall.
  9. Pointing out fallacies not correcting!!! I can be very polite in my language if I am not ticked off! As far as religious posts, some I repost if I think my friends will enjoy them. Others I read for myself or ignore. I really detest the 'repost if you love Jesus. Ignore if you hate Jesus'. arg What a nasty attitude they have. A lot of the posts have good points even if I disagree with them. Those I do tend to repost with comments. We really can change the world if we try and that is what I try to do in a small way. Usually politely. :)
  10. Stumbling blocks are related to salvation. Who prays is not going to affect my personal salvation but it might have a bearing on others. There are obvious ways around the stumbling blocks, prayer etc, but why leave them standing IF there is no reason behind them? If there is reason then its a whole nother situation.
  11. I am not sure that is exactly correct. The gospel is directed to everyone. On Sundays the talks tend to be more of a basic nature when non LDS would be more likely to be watching religious programming. The prophet is the president of the church true but he is the prophet for the world. How does the world hear if he only directs his talks to us? It stands to reason the prayers are also for/from all.
  12. Maybe but 70's are responsible for missionary work last I heard. Of course seminary was so long ago!!
  13. Only 70's give the prayers? Interesting. My friend does listen. :) She has a big problem with women being demeaned and to be honest so do I. I grewup with it from my grandfather next door. I have six daughters. It is important to me. Now if 70s are the only ones giving the prayers in Conference meetings there is a reason for that. Maybe along the same line as Sunday meetings tend to be more directed to missionary type discussions. See now that is what we need to know isnt it?
  14. I seem to recall other prophets telling God they are not any good at speaking but God insisted anyway. Voice has little to do with message.
  15. I do see your point but for things like giving prayers its kinda hard to see that as Doctrine. Our leaders are just people and not protected from not seeing traditional things as being a problem. In truth it isnt a problem by itself. Its is a way of thinking that would be good to consider its validity. To most men it probably would never be noticed. Our GA are men. So should we just let it go? If we are equal in value in God's eyes then why would we want it to continue? So if we would llike to see change then what would be the way to seek it? Prayer and talking to people who are in a position to consider the problem seems like the proper way to me. It might be easy for us to ignore but consider this. I have a friend on facebook. She thinks LDS women are discriminated against. Even knowing me. Now when I talk to her, politely, I tell her we are not. Then she brings this kind of thing up. So it is important to her and its not even doctrine. How can I defend it when there is no reason for it? Is it worth continuing when it stops people from listening to anything about the church? Sure I can say if you believed in the church you would understand but no. I dont understand continuing this sort of thing and I am not going to lie nor am I going to be critical of the church. I am left ignoring her concern and those that read our posts. Now I am willing to go to bat for not having gay marriages but why should I go to bat over women not praying in general conference? Let me add that if we are told its doctrine I will be right there defending it.
  16. So it would be ok if it wasnt just for expediency?
  17. Itdoes dodge the question but it is important. I have read that the feds are probably going to pass on enforcing in legal states. Still from a gospel prospective I am most interested in the answer IF legal.
  18. I repost a lot of posts on facebook. Lately I have seen a lot of really offensive posts. Most of those have little to do with reality. Obama as an african dictator was the latest one that was revolting. There is a lot of evil in many of these posts on both, or all, sides. Satan has found a very nice tool to cause dissension. With people I know are intelligent I try to point out the fallacies in a polite way especially if it has a gospel aspect to it. The problem with just letting them go is that they DO convince a huge number of people to a mistaken perspective. Shouldnt we try to help fix that?
  19. I strongly hesitate asking this question because I am not interested in justifications for marijuana use. Yet is has crossed my mind lately quite a lot mostly because I would like to have my response ready when asked.. If marijuana is legal, is it against church doctrine? It is not mentioned in the Word of Wisdom, in fact herbs are said to have their uses. So if it is legal is it permissible?
  20. I have been having a problem with the same thing lately way too much! Vort is your wife writing some of your posts?
  21. Ahhhh but to whom? Arent we asked to be submissive to God and God's will? How can that be interpreted as being submissive to policy that has not been thought out with regards to women? Policy is not necessarily good or God given and is sometimes based on wrong tradition. Given that we are to be submissive to God not man how do we work to change things we feel are wrong? I would say lots of prayer and being willing to talk to the right people, not to tell them to change but to ask them to think about why it is iike it is now and to explain why you feel it is wrong. Perhaps prayfully worded letters to the Gemeral Relief Society presidency asking that they bring it up in meetings with general authorities would make sense. That has to be part of their job, to make sure that women are given opportunities, same as men. On the other hand, I bet the women would rather not give prayers. Or anything in that big an audience. Maybe that is why they never brought it up! :)
  22. After my daughter, Talisyn, posted this on facebook I decided I had to take a look. It really is an interesting article and worth thinking about.
  23. I had a single boy in a good size 5 year old class very much like that. No wonder they gave me the class since I didnt know about him. No one else would teach it. He climbed on the chairs and would not sit down plus all the other types of things mentioned. He drew the rest of the kids into bickering etc as well. Next time they came to class there were no chairs. I brought lots of pillows so he could not climb on anything. He was very upset and begged for the chairs back. I told the class chairs were for kids who could be reverent and listen in class. When the class proved that was the case we would bring in chairs again. After about 3 classes without chairs I told them they could have chairs on a trial basis. If they relapsed the chairs would go. After that I was amazed how well they behaved. I was told later that they never had problems with him again. Now I give credit to inspiration and not so sure it would work for everyone. The trick is to listen to inspiration and do what you are inspired to do.
  24. Well pft. I really detest those rules. Did anyone ever show them kitty litter? And tenant supervision? 2013 is going to be great for you. Lets put that down to check in dec 2013!
