  1. I apologize. I am not sure how I got the idea that Elder La Grande was emeritus but definitely thought it! Well that is a shock to me. lol.
  2. Just a minute here. Apostles do have emeritus. Elder La Grande comes to mind just off hand. There have been a good number of them.
  3. A prophet can step down anytime he feels its the right thing to do. He is a prophet after all. We have had more than 12 apostles. In fact we always have more than 12. There is no reason to be inflexible given that these men are perfectly capable of asking God and receiving answers. Surely we trust them to do this. As far as the pope goes, it was shocking news. It makes sense though. He obviously is very weak physically. There are a lot of issues around his papacy that may well have influenced his decision. Overall he is a brave man to do what he feels is the right thing to do at this time. I have been disturbed to see all the crazy stuff going on the web today about him. People are reacting in some very odd ways.
  4. You would be surprised by the number of people who never get called to anything and would never think of turning down any calling. Look at your ward lists and see who is never called to do anything. You might be surprised. It always amazes me that the same people are always called to multiple jobs.
  5. Maybe he needs to be out of the home for awhile while he works on the abusive behavior FIRST off. The rest has to be dealt with but that one is of first priority.
  6. Have you talked to the therapist about this?
  7. So he does not act out on his thoughts? That does make a difference. :) Still a very frustrating situation that many besides you have to deal with even in the church. Has he tried or been willing to try some of the addiction recovery programs like the churches 12 step addiction program? In the end he is the one that has to change as I am sure you have figured out. So by lonely do you mean he gives you no emotional time or support? I dont want to get into too touchy of areas but porn addicts often do not participate in actual sex which is another big issue besides the morality issue. They seem to have odd views and expectations as to what they expect in sex. He could use a therapist but so could you to help you deal with those issues, to deal with your own emotions, needs and reactions. There are some online support sites for women in your situation. I dont have them at hand at the moment, perhaps someone here does? Or try googling.
  8. How is staying in your marriage putting the kids ahead of your needs? Is it good to have them exposed to the sexual problems of your husband? Are they actually safe under the circumstances? Are you safe from him bringing disease into your house?
  9. The most interesting person that I had a chance to sit down and talk to for an extended time was Theodore Kazinski. We met at a dance at college then went over to the student union building and talked for quite a long time. Surprisingly we discussed what is acceptable for the sort of thing he did later on. Laugh but I told him bombs were not acceptable for 'civil protests' because innocent people got hurt. This was during the time of the SDS. He said they were casualties of war and we had a long discussion on that. Obviously my arguments did not sway him sufficiently. I just found a photo online of the car, and I swear the shirt, Clive Cussler was wearing when we saw him in Blythe. The other man in this photo is his son that was also with him that day. I was thinking Cussler was wearing shorts but now I am wondering if he took this shot that same day. Everything else looks the same as we saw it. http://www.templetv.net/files/2011/07/clive-cussler-with-car1.jpeg
  10. But I think that God does protect us in the ways that are eternal. We are subject to the miseries of this world but when we need help to get through them then, yes, He does protect us. We tend to think more along the lines of carnal safety when He is thinking along the lines of eternal spiritual safety.
  11. I am guessing the number of temples? Or the % outside the USA?
  12. Which one did you second guess on? A weird thing happened when I did it. It said I did two wrong after it was finished but they had the answers I did wrong. Seriously lol. I know there are between 100 and 200 temples and I know what BYU is.
  13. Wait, Did This 15-Year-Old From Maryland Just Change Cancer Treatment? - Forbes I thought this article was very pertinent to the discussion. Notice how many experts turned him away before one person listened. Oh and he came up with it daydreaming in class not paying attention to the teacher.
  14. Its $20 dollars. hmmm.
  15. Whatever that guy said it wasnt enough because his wife was ticked.
  16. When we lived there the news had a story about a guy and a massage parlor. Was deeply disturbing.
  17. I have heard this sort of thing to defend using drugs and engaging in sex to catch criminals as well. Has to be a line. I am not sure you have to lie to mislead someone. In fact I am sure you dont. Fortunately I am not going to have to be a judge in Zion to decide.
  18. I met a famous romance author once but didnt realize it at the time. I was selling used books and this nice looking lady and her husband walked up to our stand. She asked if I read romances and I told her no. that they were too boring. lol. She got an odd look but was very polite then walked on down the row. Dont remember who she was but feel bad now. Romance can be very nice reading which I learned later.
  19. One of my kids, you may know them, was in the fourth grade. She was reading a book, the Biography of Sigmund Freud. Now that is a huge book. Interesting but huge. Her teacher told her to stop faking that she could actually even read it. She protested and he told her that he was testing her on the book. He did and then realized she not only read it but understood it. Oh then he was all for her being in a gifted class etc. First he had to insult her though to get to that point. Another of my kids was in a new school in the sixth grade. Well she did good and was on the 'principles list' etc. Her teachers loved her and she was well liked. By the middle of the 7th grade she made sure she got at least a B. Why? Well no one likes a 'school girl' and she did not like standing out. She didnt mind being thoght of as smart but no more than that. When she was 2 she could count backwards and was learning multiplication and division for fun. That stopped dead in its tracks when she realized that it was not usual. Another of my kids took up an interesting game. Want to give her standardized tests? Go for it. She answered by how pretty the dots looks on the answer sheet once she discovered teachers bugged her all the time if she was answering correctly. We do not reward people, socially, for being different. In punishing them we lose so much. I have no answers but it is wrong. One teacher actually told us that his goal was to mainstream all the kids including ours. By mainstream he meant making them all fit in the middle. He explained it all out to us. Wow we were really impressed.
  20. Oh my gosh. I forgot Clive Cussler. lol. We were in Blythe at Albersons. That is on the highway just as you go from California to Arizona. We were putting our groceries in the van when two men in this fantastic restored old 50's car, parked next to us and asked if there was a better gas station in town with more reasonable gas prices than the ones by the freeway. He was wearing a Hawaiin print shirt and tan baggy shorts and sandals. The other man, we later realized was his son. Later we also found out that Cussler liked to go out in the Arizona desert and prospect. Lol. I remember it was so hot and was astounded that one of my favorite authors was standing there asking us where a cheap gas station was.
  21. When one of our daughters was little, my husband had to take some information to the church office building. He took her with him in a stroller. As he was going up the elevator a man got on. It was Elder La Grande. He looked down at Amber, smiled and then very seriously told Ken that Amber was a very special child of God. Ken said he got chills. It meant/means a lot to us.
  22. We used to live in the ward the Wolfgrams lived in before they became famous. They were going down to Provo (Orem?) to do stuff with the Osmond studios at the time but I dont think many people knew them then. In fact my husband was the home teacher for their family. Oh and Theodore Kazinkski. How could I forget him? My husband has met Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Marilyn Monroe, Charles Bronson, Joey Lansing (used to date her), President Hinckley, Eva Marie Saint (just before she made On the WaterFront, Willie Brown, Harvey Milk, Elder Haight, (who I also met since he had a house and used to live in our town) saw Jim Jones at one of his meetings, Bob Dillon, Credence Clearwater Band, Joan Baez, Country Joe and the Fish, Janis Joplin, (the singers used to all jam across the street from a mortuary he worked in!) Linus Pauling. Jerry and Pat Brown, Ronald Reagan, Robert Kennedy, saw John Kennedy, Dan Blocker, Cameron Mitchell, More but his memory stinks.
  23. I have known some incredibly intelligent people and can think of only one that was annoying. He was very much ridiculed for his intelligence too. Poor kid just didnt know how to relate to people but was quite interesting once you knew him. Most were pretty involved in their work but seemed pretty normal. Sometimes I wonder how many people do hide their intelligence for fear of being mocked. What a wasteful burden we put on people to be average. God has told us to use our talents. Think how far we could have come if we did instead of hiding them?
  24. Beefche, one of the problems I was having was that if I didnt get the same amount each day I got the withdrawal symptoms even though I was drinking a lot of pepsi. You dont have to quit to get symptoms. Just cut down. I did talk to a doctor about this while still drinking it and was told that fluctuations cause withdrawal.
  25. I stopped Pepsi because it was running me. I was as bad as any addict wanting a fix and that just ticked me off. It was HARD. Not actually stopping but the awful withdrawals. They lasted about was week and a half but I was still tired for a while longer. Since then I have read that doctors recommend getting a doctors advice on how to quit because it can be a health issue same as quitting alcohol. Caffeine is a vicious chemical when its thwarted. It was hard to find another drink for me. I tried A&W but then decided I really needed to get off all those calories. Juice has too much sugar in it to drink a lot. Eventually I found Walmarts 0 calorie strawberry flavored water. It isnt nasty and has a bit of fiz. Wish I could drink straight water but I have issues with water so not likely to happen. One thing to keep in mind is that you are dealing with a bad addiction. It is not easy to get off of. The missionaries came over one day and were talking about taking control of our physical body not letting it control us. We did not break the WoW but it convinced me on the spot that I was stopping my spiritual growth and well being if I was controlled by my addiction. The nice thing is that caffeene drinks taste like I would imagine cow urine tastes like and it smells so bad. Makes it very easy to not relapse. Thanks to God for that favor!
