General Authorities??? Living expenses???
annewandering replied to brown67's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
Somehow I dont think the GA are much interested in profit from their callings. If they are then they are in the wrong job or are being tested. If God calls them and they need to be able do their callings without worrying about starving then it matters nothing to me that they receive a good living allowance or not. They deserve to have treats same as anyone along with the necessary expenses of staying alive. Who deserves them more? -
Joseph Smith and Priesthood for women.

I know more women are poor than men are poor. While I am encouraged that college graduates have a better chance of fair treatment, I know we are not finished solving the problem of fairness to women in the marketplace. The feeling from many women is that they do not feel equal and then they see that women do not hold the priesthood so perhaps they are feeling that even in God's own church women are not treated equally or fairly. In some cases I agree that women are not always treated fairly in the church but as far as I can see that is more on the heads of individual people not the church. I have never had an issue with the priesthood being held by men. It makes no difference to me. What I do find interesting was Joseph Smith's comment if accurately reported. What I am inclined to believe is that we are to be one in marriage. If we are one then does it matter who is ordained? Do women need to be higher leadership positions? I dont know. The church is making a solid attempt to bring women into leadership meetings so we are heard. In the end, it seems to me, that it is a matterof trusting God. If He wants women to have the priesthood we will have it. If not we wont. If he wants a woman to be a prophet and president of the church it will happen. Until then, if ever, we need to accept God and His will whatever that is. -

That link compares women who are college graduates with men who have equal time etc on the job. That rather limits the width of the studies. -

I lay my hands on my husbands head often. And I pray often but never gave anyone a blessing yet. (Cool hands help headaches) -

I like the checks and balances idea Skippy has. Not only does priesthood form a sort of checks and balances in the family it gives the man a tangible reason to balance his spiritual life with his job. -

Ok thats an interesting point. So we need to know how accurate the secretary was but I do not have the facilities for determining that. basically we are stuck trying to sort it with what we do have. -

We, meaning the people on this thread, have a unique meaning for the word feminist? Yes, I think you all do. If I am wrong and I am speaking of a different era then why do women still get paid something like 75% of what men in the same jobs get? In some ways things have changed but not nearly enough. Being feminist does not mean men do not have issues that need to be resolved as well. We all have work to do on giving us all credit for being human and having equal chances in this world. -

So if feminists want to become men or eliminate men what do you call those of us that think women can do anything they have the talent for and should not be banned from any endeavor because they are female? Us women who were told from the time we were little that we could not do that because we were girls. We realize we are not fathers but dont want to be. We are happy to be women but we are not happy to be marginalized or demeaned. We want to be paid the exact same as a man would be for the same job even if it has a different name reserved for women. We want the exact same chance of advancement even if we are not the father in a family. So who are we? I am a feminist. There is no other name for it. Not that I know of anyway. -
wow! Bra's do make pretty good pockets. Never would have thought they might make a dangerous situation.

sane /sān/ Adjective (of a person) Of sound mind; not mad or mentally ill: "hard work kept me sane". (of an undertaking or manner) Reasonable; sensible. Synonyms sensible - reasonable - rational - sound This is the definition I use. Do others use a different one? Well one does. The law defines it this way: insanity legal definition of insanity. insanity synonyms by the Free Online Law Dictionary. insanity n. 1) mental illness of such a severe nature that a person cannot distinguish fantasy from reality, cannot conduct her/his affairs due to psychosis, or is subject to uncontrollable impulsive behavior. Insanity is distinguished from low intelligence or mental deficiency due to age or injury. If a complaint is made to law enforcement, to the district attorney, or to medical personnel that a person is evidencing psychotic behavior, he/she may be confined to a medical facility long enough (typically 72 hours) to be examined by psychiatrists who submit written reports to the local superior/county/district court. A hearing is then held before a judge, with the person in question entitled to legal representation, to determine if she/he should be placed in an institution or special facility. The person may request a trial to determine sanity. The original hearings are often routine with the psychiatric findings accepted by the judge. In criminal cases, a plea of "not guilty by reason of insanity," will require a trial on the issue of the defendant's insanity (or sanity) at the time the crime was committed. In these cases the defendant usually claims "temporary insanity" (crazy then, but okay now). The traditional test of insanity in criminal cases is whether the accused knew "the difference between right and wrong," following the "M'Naughten Rule" from 19th Century England. Most states require more sophisticated tests based on psychiatric and/or psychological testimony evaluated by a jury of laypersons or a judge without psychiatric training. 4) a claim by a criminal defendant of his insanity at the time of trial requires a separate hearing to determine if a defendant is sufficiently sane to understand the nature of a trial and participate in his/her own defense. If found to be insane, the defendant will be ordered to a mental facility, and the trial held only if sanity returns. 5) sex offenders may be found to be sane for all purposes except the compulsive dangerous and/or anti-social behavior. They are usually sentenced to special facilities for sex offenders, supposedly with counseling available. However, there are often maximum terms related to the type of crime, so that parole and release may occur with no proof of cure of the compulsive desire to commit sex crimes. Do you recommend the cops come into your house and check your sock drawer every once in awhile? Or they become psychic? If their kids shoots themself then is it time to revoke their license?
-
All I know is police did not shoot him. Some have thought he suicided.
-
If my kids were younger and went to a school with that policy we would be home schooling for sure.
-
Selek, you may not be in favor of breaking up unions but right to work is.

Sane people dont do these things. Legally sane maybe but not sane. I dont have a lot of sympathy but he was not sane. One of the things I read is that he may have been let into the building because he was known because of his mom which got me to thinking. What shooting spree anywhere in any school has been done by unknown shooters? As far as I know they were all known at the schools. They have all been troubled people. Most were bullied. We have a problem but its not something that can be dealt with after. It has to be done before. How many knew this man had problems? What kind of help was he getting? His age is similar to my son with the ptsd. Was he a soldier? Something was wrong and something could have been done most likely to have prevented all this. We need to work harder on prevention.

My inlaws were dead before we married. I have given thanks for that many times. Yep. I did say that. Of course they were a special circumstance. I would like a closer relationship with my soninlaws. Closer in that I wish more lived closer. The one that does live close is great and we get along just fine. (Talisyn's husband) Of course there was the one that threatened my daughter that if she went against him then he would sit kitty corner to our house with a rifle and shot us all. Him we arent so close to. (he is gone now) Some are worth knowing but others not so much.

You do remember the recent fire in Bangladesh right? The one where over a hundred workers died because the company preferred profits over safety? How about the three in India recently where huge numbers of people died. We rarely have that in this country anymore directly because of unions. Oh and I never said they were slaves. Slaves do get room and board although some in other countries are provided with bunks so they are right there to start to work on their shifts.
-
Is it ok for corporations to lobby but not the workers? Even the church has lobbyists, or so I hear. Are the workers an exempted class who have no right to fight in Washington for their best interests?
-
What we need is to unionize the workers in all the third world countries. They deserve safety and decent wages too.

It is cool! ok I plead guilty in thinking priest and monk are the same thing. :) He was a religious figure!! -
Agreed! Now on to the real point of my post. Squidmom! Those kittens are even cuter than the one in my avatar!!!

Back to the post. Ok. BOTH her and her sister have been in the same boat? Why do you suppose that might be? When you decided to go to the bishop was it your idea or hers? Is her sister still married? What is the family background on sex? A lot of questions but is it possible that she just doesnt think its a big deal? If so you might want to back up and take a look at this a bit more. Do you think its a big deal? If so it sounds like you have a big difference on what is right and wrong. Right now that means waiting 3 months but consider this. 18 years from now your daughter or son is getting serious about some one and they are spending a lot of time together. Will they think its a big deal or not? Kids learn attitudes from parent/s.

St. Nick was a monk. He gave gifts. He didnt promote merchandising. Perhaps if we remembered what he actually did we would put the blame on commercialism where it belongs not on a poor monk. -
Well having had truly awful GD teachers I have to say you can string a thought together so I bet you do fine! It will keep you on your toes and you will learn a lot. My husband and I subbed one week, dont ask why cuz I dont know, and it was on the Tree of Life. I think I know why the teacher opted out! The thing is I understand it a lot better now. Not sure abut the class! lol. Remember Moses? He had a problem with words and he did good.

Quote from Selek: "No one is suggesting that unions be abolshed- only that their compulsory and extortionate practices be amended." Actually you are very wrong. Read the history of 'right to work' and you will see that is precisely the purpose of it. Selek, I have to wonder here. In the name of disclosure, what is your job?
