If we dwell on what we can't do, we'll get overwhelmed. God's plan was not to save the world through sweeping reform and government agencies. Even Jesus didn't go out to conquer the world. No, God's plan is to work from the smallest unit of union, the family and work our way up. The girls who are trapped, become victims largely because they are trying to escape bad homes. We need to strengthen our homes, and our communities, and help other families do the same. We need to remove the victim before they become a victim. And that starts in the home. A predator will not prey on the strong.

I can't find specifics, but I do recall that a gay couple who was critical in the gay marriage lawsuits specifically moved to a state in order to have a better chance of winning their case.

I think about my mother, and she would say, "be polite". If I meet a crazy person on the street who has a flower pot on her head, and she calls it a hat, I am going to tell her it's a lovely hat, because it's the polite thing to do. Same thing for all the crazy cultural changes going on. Smile and be polite.

As to biological arguments, the fact is, they don't matter. We are supposed to put off the natural man, and that includes lustful feelings wherever they come from, and who ever they are directed toward. Certainly there are plenty of heterosexual men who have lusted for someone other than their spouse. Biologically this valid, and certainly valid for hormonal teenagers, but God has given rules, designed to ensure our lasting happiness, not just our immediate urges.

I believe in freedom of assembly, which means we should never be forced to engage in any transaction or interaction we don't want to. That said, if you work for a company, your contract is with the company, not the customer, so you can refuse service, but you can also be fired for that choice. But I also think it is foolish to offer a service and not provide to willing customers. I wonder what the early Saints did when non-Mormon settlers who maybe gambled, or worked on Sunday or cussed wanted to engage in commerce in Utah. Well, I know the answer. Brigham Young encouraged cooperation over conflict.

My brother fought off a burglar who broke into their apartment, and held him until the police came. This was 25 years ago in Argentina. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. He's a bailiff now, so he now gets paid to tackle bad guys.

Convert baptism interviews are done by missionary leaders (District and Zone leaders). They have a set of guidelines, and specific questions to understand if the potential convert is prepared for baptism or if they need to hold off a bit to understand the principles and requirements. You can read the whole process here. https://www.lds.org/manual/preach-my-gospel-a-guide-to-missionary-service/how-do-i-prepare-people-for-baptism-and-confirmation?lang=eng

A surprising approach to promoting gender equality
bytebear replied to askandanswer's topic in Current Events
Well, what about fat people? Clearly the light is weight biased. -
I lived on Mountain Dew in college. Now I drink Coke Zero. But I do find that fruit in the morning is very good. If you are doing all nighters, take cat naps. 30 minutes here and there. You need to take breaks. Don't skip meals, and snack on healthy stuff. You will probably live on Coke and pizza for a while. But you can plan ahead so you aren't just grabbing a snack from the candy machine. Worst thing for me was a company that had free soda. Oh, and find a job that doesn't work you to death. I did game programming for years, and it burned me out. Literally I had no life for 6 months at a time. We'd do a release in October, and then they'd just let you sleep for two weeks straight. It was horrible. Don't be in a toxic environment for more than a year. Move on. There are plenty of jobs that are less stressful even in programming. I still code every day, but I don't work more than 8 hours a day, and almost never am called at home or on weekends. Your management should at least be working on making things easier over time. You also need good mentors who can review your coding style and techniques so you learn the tricks of the trade. Work smarter not harder, which means, be lazy. Lazy programmers find ways to make the job easier, which makes the process better. Learn design patterns on top of syntax and logic. Don't reinvent the wheel (unless you are learning how to make a wheel).

I'd like to visit all the Disney parks of the world. Shanghi is supposed to be amazing. I would feel a bit guilty not exploring native cultures, but hey, I guess I'd have to take some time to see the area too. I was endowed in the Salt Lake temple and I go back to Salt Lake every Christmas. I've been to Europe (just not Paris Disneyland). I have Deseret book here that has a distribution center. I've been to almost every temple in the western United States. I've been to a Rose Bowl game (USC season ticket holder), so I've had my fill of college football (although I would like to go to some Utah games). I've seen several Broadway shows, as well as traveling tours. I've done about everything you can do as a tourist in Hollywood, since that's what you do when people visit. I would like to be on Jeopardy and win at least one game. But since I know Disneyland like the back of my hand, I'd like to experience other Disney parks as an outsider.

We sat in the same pew for years, probably left side, fourth row. Then my mom got a calling that kept her from getting to Sacrament meeting until it just began, so we switched to last row of the overflow section. No one really wanted our new seats.

I think the difference is the left tends to have saviors rather than ideas. This is because progressivism requires a benevolent dictator to force everyone to be nice to each other, distribute wealth and resources fairly, etc. So they cling to leaders. That's wy Bill Clinton is revered, and why they already per-selected Hillary as the DNC pick for president, and why people liked Bernie, even if they had no idea what his actual plan was other than rich people will pay for my stuff. And it's why they were shocked that they lost. How can you lose against the perfect candidate? Especially when the other candidate is so flawed personally? Republicans, rather, look to ideology, regardless of leadership, so you get 10+ candidates all with varying ideas on how to solve various problems. Trump happened to resonate with the ideas that both parties were ignoring. The RNC was making excuses as to why Trump was winning, rather than looking at why people chose him. And he isn't a "savior" like DNC leaders are seen as. He just had the right message, one that the rest of the Republicans refused to address.

for question 3. We had the choice not to come to Earth, and 1/3 of us/them did, but they are now stuck and can't progress. We got bodies and will be resurrected with a perfect body like Christ, which is apparently necessary for progression toward perfection. Those who chose to stay behind, are left behind, never to progress further, and are therefore damned.

Educate them on things you cannot hide from them. But hide from them the ugly of the world as best you can.

Does the language of the scriptures bother you?
bytebear replied to a topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
"Following the Norman invasion of 1066, thou was used to express intimacy, familiarity or even disrespect, while another pronoun, you, the oblique/objective form of ye, was used for formal circumstances (see T–V distinction)." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thou Perhaps, not in the context of the Bible, but I knew I learned that somewhere. -
Does the language of the scriptures bother you?
bytebear replied to a topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
I am one who love the language. And actually, the "ye" and "thou" are familiar, and "you" is the formal. We just don't have the distinction any more. Many languages do (Spanish for example has "tu" and "usted"). I grew up with it, and speaking that way in prayer, so I consider it the language of worship in my own mind. I am sure it's very different in other languages. English has simply lost some charm, I think. I remember going to the movie "Much Ado About Nothing" with several friends, and I was one of the few laughing at all the jokes. No one else got them, because they didn't get the language. I find that sad, and something lost in modern society. -
Go to church. Get in contact with missionaries. Their job is to go over the basics of the faith, what is expected of you, and what is required for baptism. That's their job. To prepare you for baptism. Then you become a member of the church, and your ward (congregation), where you will continue to learn and grow in the gospel.

Random Hypotheticals - Clo(w)ning Around
bytebear replied to Ironhold's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
A clone still begins as a tiny life, and grows, independent of the other. It's just like creating an identical twin but at a different time. Identical twins do not share ordinances or lives. -
People smoke knowing it's unhealthy. People can have testimonies of the Gospel, but cannot live to the covenants required. We are in our Second Estate. We passed our First Estate. They did not. We may not pass our Second Estate, even though we know what is required.

It reminds me of this incident. I thought the administration handled it very well, and made it very clear. By the way, no students protested.

How do you maintain emotional control while giving a talk?
bytebear replied to classylady's topic in General Discussion
Talk about the laughter, the fun, the joyful moments. I know I would just fall apart too, but have a list of things you want to cover. Get your stories together, your memories on paper, and practice so you don't ramble, and so you don't get side lined by a memory. -
Assuming Joseph Smith was a prophet...
bytebear replied to chasingthewind's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
My opinion is that only one church that emerged from Joseph Smith's foundation fulfills prophecy regarding the nature of Christ's Church and its global mission. -
I dont think he's anti-religion at all. He's a laps Catholic from what I understand. His issues are cultural with Islam, and has some frightening statistics to back them up. If anything he's a Constitutionalist, a defender of free speech, freedom of religion, and feels the left is truly destroying the experiment of liberty we call America. But he is a potty mouth, which won't go over well. Sad, but I think the same of the Book of Mormon musical, which has a somewhat decent overall message, but presents it in terms that are unwatchable.
