Tithing: Pre-tax or After tax? Gross v. Net?
Generally_Me replied to nimrod's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
We have spoken to the bishop, he was the one who asked if it would be possible to catch up by the end of the year. He then said, so long as we are caught up by the end of the year, he sees no problem. Hubby has also donated time to the church farm. I'm sorry, I shouldn't have said anything. It's just disheartening to have people say things like "Pay 12%" "Pay on gross" "Pay on your job benefits" etc. when I know we are struggling and doing what we can, and I would go without those "benefits" if I had the choice, in order to pay towards a household expense. Like I said, we're doing better now, I just felt some guilt in coming here and seeing everyone's answers. I should have followed my initial instinct and stayed out of it. -

So you admit that Mormons ARE Christians? I don't think anyone claimed they are the SAME. Are Catholics the same as Protestants? Are born agains the same as Baptists? But are they all fall under the heading Christian. Rather like, in my previous point, are all bears the same as dogs? Are cats related to mice? Yet they all fall under the definition of mammal, even if they aren't all the same, nor even eat the same food or have the same habitats. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints believes in and has faith in Christ. Please take the following comment in the spirit in which it is intended. Not angry. Maybe a bit teasing, a tad flabbergasted, but I'm striving for lovingly too (as I feel like I've gotten to know you the last several days, and hold no ire against you, but wish to treat you as a brother under God): As for comparing dictionary definitions with a preference in ice cream... It seems obvious a dictionary definition is the correct one. When taking a test in high school, if you had an incorrect answer, did you take it to the teacher and say "Based on my opinion, this really is the correct answer"? -
Tithing: Pre-tax or After tax? Gross v. Net?
Generally_Me replied to nimrod's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
Thank you for that Gnat. It makes me a feel a lot better. My family has been having some financial hardship, and paying what we could when we could. It got worse, but now is getting better (cross fingers). I hope make extra payments to catch up by the end of the year, but it would not be feasible if I payed 10% of gross; net is feasible, but just; but for me to pay gross I would be living off the Bishop's storehouse and having no electricity (and hence no way to cook the food from the storehouse). That to me is defeating the purpose of tithing, as I would be taking from the church while giving to it. I like to think that God understands when we are trying and paying something, and not out buying new designer clothes with the monies that are owed in tithe. -

I wonder how recognizable she is in France? This could either open a lot of doors, or detract from the message. -

Thews, Is a bear a mammal? So are all mammals bears? -

Thews, Mormons don't believe in traditional hell, so you will not be damned. Depending on how you live, you have a good chance at Telestial. Perhaps your father thought the way you wrote your letter would upset the family, as you have noticed the last several days there are quite a few people here who have gotten annoyed/riled up with the way you have occasionally presented your thoughts and our beliefs. I don't want you to think I am angry, because I am not, but if you approach your family the way you have approached subjects here, there will possibly be some anger. BUT, unless there is something more going on, they are your family and will love you anyway. May think you are lost from Celestial glory, but love you anyway. -

Hrm I think there is a quote somewhere about how we are judged based on the amount of knowledge we are given before rejecting the gospel. And how sincere we are in our beliefs. Ms. Halfway and Funky are completely correct; only God can answer that question for you. IF hypothetically you knew an awful lot about the church before joining and made an informed choice, then decided to reject it due to not having hometeachers (or some other minor offense of man), your judgement will/would be harsher than if you were baptized at 8, in an inactive family, decided you didn't care for the people and just left, never having a real testimony of the church. Only God can look at your heart and see which type of scenario you fall into. -
You're kidding me...this is a modern quote, not something from the dark ages?

Well, in my living room there is a distinct Asian theme, but the Proclamation on the Family and The Living Christ are hung in the dining area; there are pictures of Christ in the main bedroom; and there are framed Bible verses in my daughter's room, sooo there you go. Of course, if you expect all Mormons to have a dozen kids, you probably would guess I'm from some weird off shoot sect, as we only have one.

Why do some topics have laugh buttons and others do not?

Glow-in-the-dark: We have the same problem in my ward. I have an achievement days calling, I never had more than one girl show up and each girl only showed once. I recently got a RS calling; tonight is my first home enrichment planned by me; there are over 180 women in the ward. It's going so well that 3 of the 10 in the opening skit have begged off; that's the ones who called me first, we'll see how it really goes... Sorry, I don't have any advice right now. I will let you know if I stumble on anything that works though.

Do "Born again" Churches Seriously Believe This?!
Generally_Me replied to Carl62's topic in Christian Beliefs Board
If there are 7 bil now, and a century ago half that, let's go with the idea there were 2-3 bil people on earth for, say 30 generations. As generations were quite short in medieval times, I think that 70 billion is not that far off. -

Please help...marital problems and we're about to get sealed

"Five Love Languages' is excellent. Something in your post (where you talk about being roommates rather than married) also reminded me of "Proper Care and Feeding of Marriage" by Laura Schlessinger. -
Which seasoned stake patriarch said that? And was he talking about a married man or divorced? What was the reason, was it unjustifiable to God or to the patriarch? Where is the talk, so this can be taken in context? Star11, if you have the goal to marry in the temple, I would think that you're covered. You are making covenants with God as well as spouse, and we are judged based on what we know, not what we don't. Plus if you both have a temple recommend for the action, it seems obvious to me that the church is OK with the marriage between you two.

Do 'worthy' Mormon women only wear dresses? No. We are allowed to wear pants.
