  1. The guideline we try to give around here is that if is bothersome enough to ask some strangers on the internet on if you should go see the bishop... Then it is worth a trip to the bishop's office to get the official word. We can not offer the calm and peace that you can get from your bishop. Go talk to him.
  2. I think you guys are talking past each other... There are two things that I see that are required to be exalted... One must have the ordinances, and one must 'become' what Christ would have us become. The Ordinance and the Authority perform such ordinances are currently only held by the LDS church. This sounds more exclusive then it really is due to work for the dead. If you only have the ordinances but you don't 'become' what Christ would have use become then you don't make it. (As has been pointed out) For the 'Become' part alot of that work can be done outside the LDS church. Other faiths, solo visits into spiritually etc. can all work to help someone 'become.' But just like ordinances don't work alone neither does this. At some point this person must 'Become' willing to accept the yolk of Christ, to accept the required Ordinances, and while path might have been different in reaching this point, once it is reached from this point on the path is the same.
  3. So the writer who had to imagine the scene and write it and the artist who had to imagine it and draw it aren't third parties?... They aren't harming themselves in the making of it? The editors and proof readers and all the others that help get the porn out in the world aren't being damaged because they are only mentally partaking of the sin?
  4. I'm not sure I'd call it a double standard... I'd think I'd calling that we have trouble living the standard loving the sinner while 'hating' the sin. I think it might be easier to do so when we don't have an emotional investment in the person getting it 'right' If someone is struggling with sin and they hear their spouse say that such sin is 'automatic' grounds for divorce, that makes it pretty clear that if the the sinning spouse wants to remain married they need to 'hide' and that makes everything worst. What they need to know is that it is safe and better to come forward and get it out in the open. And that is something that any spouse is going to not be doing throwing words around like 'automatic'. This is not to say that the impact or consequences of porn are minimal, they are not. It can lead and even be the primary cause of a divorce, but it should not be automatic.
  5. Its also possible that they will get a few sentences in... see it for what it is and then spend the discussion time talking how they need to be more careful in what they pick
  6. Wear your garments until/unless you are instructed not to as part of working through things with the Bishop. Most likely you will be in a Bishop's Court. Stake Court is usually for Priesthood holders, although this is something Bishop and Stake President can change if they feel the need. You have broken your part of the Sealing. Assuming that your husband has not the blessing of the Sealing remain in effect for him. And your kids still have it. You can get your part back once you repent. Fast, pray, read the scriptures, follow the promptings of the Spirit on what you need to do.
  7. Ok so you don't want a check-list.. Change it to 'draw a line' then You seem to want someone in the church to say this far and no farther. This has some minor differences from a checklist but the end result is much the same. You draw the line for yourself based on your prayers and studies and where you feel the Lord would have you be. You seem to be reaching the point were you are finding your own answers, which is great. But no one here can validate if your personal impressions and guidance from the Lord. Some of us can agree with you and some of us will disagree with where you are drawing line, but in the end it comes down to you doing what you think the Lord would have you do. And everyone else doing what they think the Lord would have them do.
  8. Montezuma300 it sound to me that while you are trying to replace your parents providing the check list with one that the church provides. While becoming independent of your parents is a natural and necessary, the church isn't really going to offer a replacement check list, (or be replacement parents) The church will not provide a list of what movies and games are acceptable. Such a list would be incredibly hard to maintain given how quickly things change. Plus people are at different points of their spirituality. If the church could and did produce such a list you would have people questioning why this game and not this movie and others saying 'I can't do x?!? why I am an adult I can make my own choices' and then others who pretty much blindly follow never gaining the understanding or growing or progressing. Just checking off the list. And you'd have still others who use it to judge other, 'Did you see so-in-so playing that rated M game? What sinner. We should tell the bishop' And those are just some of the reason I can think of off the top of my head. The church does not provide detailed list of everything we should and should not do. The for Strength of Youth pamphlet is about as detailed as the church gets. The church does however teach principles and provided guidelines. A few of those principles and guidelines are prayer and following the promptings of the spirit. That is were you can get your 'check list'. You are clearly studying and pondering this issue which is good. Take it to the Lord in prayer, ask for his guidance, his help. Then listen to the promptings you get in return. You will find yourself growing in understanding as the Lord provides you with the 'check list' of what he want you to do or not do.
  9. I am of the opinion that moves should be treated like any other welfare need. In a nutshell the church shouldn't do anything that the family or person is capable (within reason) of doing themselves. This leaves it open for all kinds of help depending on need, but also cuts short anyone feeling that they are somehow 'entitled' to have members of the church stop what they are doing, and do stuff for them just because.
  10. Portal 2 came out with a lot of hype... It would be hard for anything to live up to that kind of hype. But it is good solid squeal. It continues the story, and it has everything you said you liked about the first one. I think you will be quite happy with bumping it up your gaming list/budget whatever
  11. If you haven't yet... Go to play Portal 2 now
  12. In my ward most of the High Priest are retired and their kids are all grown up... Most of the elders are starting their careers, and starting their family. And while families are called our greatest treasure, from a strictly financial view point they are a great financial black hole that sucks all you can give and demands more. But money isn't the treasures we should be looking to store up.
  13. The limits and boundary's of a man's priesthood authority can be found in Doctrine and Covenants 121 Verses 34 to 44. The problems come from when we over step these limits
  14. heh... oh yeah we do...
  15. In my ward the bishop has established that he will (and has) rebuke(d) any young man that insults any young woman. Publicly if necessary. He feels its a part of teaching young men how to be good fathers and priesthood holders that respect women. So in my ward such an action would be seen as him continuing to do what he has always done. Thus he would be insulated by being constant even if his daughter is involved as in this theoretical case.
  16. Let me see if I can clarify a few things Under the umbrella of LDS.net there are many sub fourms each of these subfourms has different sets of restrictions on what can be discussed based on the purpose of that subfourm Some of the sub fourms are Admin Alerts Introductions Advice Marriage and Relationship Advice Current Events Church News etc.. Each of these sub fourms work under a different set of expectation depending on their purpose. This thread is in the LDS Gospel Discussion subforum. This subforum's purpose is to give a safe place for those who are interested in learning about what LDS doctrine. Ideally the answers would come from official church sources, but as you can tell personal opinion, experiences, and takes also get shared. Now you think there might be some interest in learning about Catholic doctrine, and under the LDS.net umbrella this would and is allowed (as long as everyone remains respectful) just not (for reasons I hope are now clear) this subfourm. I'd recommend the Christian Beliefs Board - LDS Social Network Forums Start a thread or two there saying you want to compare/share doctrines. Again, assuming all sides remain respectful, this will not pose any problems
  17. Update: Grand jury: No indictment against father who killed daughter's alleged abuser - CNN.com I think this means it is over legally speaking
  18. The case for the father in Houston is in the hands of a grand jury... it will play out from there as the system is designed to. The big difference between the two is the first one claims to be seeking either justice or prevention long after the fact, both of which we as a society have taken out of the hands of an individual and put it into the hands of the system or collective group. We consider this a wise thing to do. The second case the man from Houston was defending or protecting a weaker third party in the moment of being attacked. This is something that we as a society consider acceptable, defending yourself or a third party from hostilities even if it means the death of the attacking party. We consider this a wise thing to allow. So for the second man we have to figure out if he crossed the line from defense in the moment, (which is allowed) or to taking it upon himself to administer justice, or prevention after the fact. (which is not) In this case that line can be very hard to determine and will depend on details we probably don't have. Right now it appears that those who know the facts seem to be leaning toward that he did not, but that is not the final answer.
  19. I think that pretty much all serial killers have some kind of twisted justification for why what they did was right, proper, or somehow the will of God. The only difference here is that this one picked something that can resonate with a lot of people. But don't mistake it, he is a serial killer, and he is only sorry that he got caught.
  20. Just to add to the already existing advice. White is not required. As for the toddler you should know best if any of the above advice will work. To expand on something Applepansy said. You (or other trusted adult) can sit in the circle and hold the toddler while the priesthood circles and perform the blessing on the child. This can help.
  21. We don't know many of the whats and whys of how Sealings work or its purpose in the Grand Heavenly order of things. We simply know that it is important and that we are suppose to bind the whole human family together before the end. Then you have to ask what is meant by not being lost, and being saved. If you try to expand it to mean they will be exalted, well that is a hard sell without repentance. If however being saved and not lost means that there is a place for the child in the Kingdom of God (in one of the Three Degree of Glory) then it is not all that hard to see, given who can make it into them. Joseph Smith could easily been trying to reassure parents with this idea.
  22. It does appear that we don't have access to any official policy on the matter. However it seems that church is stopping short when the case of an individual's gender is unclear. The church has declared gender to be a 'eternal characteristic' and it does have some gender based roles (priesthood and temple ceremonies beyond baptism) so when it is unclear to what should be done the church stops, until it becomes clear. I can only imagine how hard this might be to the person affected by it, but it puts said person in the position of being stopped by something out of their control (The church saying no is out of their control), and the doctrine in such case is very clear. No blessing will be denied to those that are faithful who, through no fault of their own, can not advance, even though they wish to with all their heart.
  23. heh... knowing how he might be bound it really quite trivial, compared to knowing that he will be. I know the Book of Mormon was given to us to show us what we need to do and what we are going to face. So I give a lot of weight to the types and shadows that I think it shows us. And there is a lot in common with how things happened before, during, and after Christ coming to America as to that we have been told to expect before, during and after Christ's second coming.
  24. I see this As agreeing with what you said and this As agreeing with what I said... Both make the condition of Satan's binding due to the righteousness of the people who are left on the earth, which I feel to be absolutely the key for Satan to be bound
  25. I have to disagree here... Satan will be bound during the millennium for the same reason he was bound during the short time after the visit to the Americas (for those people). Because the people chose to live righteously and teach their kids in righteousness and that took Satan's power away. This was also the case of Enoch's zion. There isn't going to be some mystical wrestling match between the Savior and Satan where Satan loses and gets tied up. The battle is in the heart of each individual person. Satan being bound during the millennium will be a side effect of people living in righteousness, and his being loosed again will be a side effect of that falling away.
