  1. Because you equate an attack on how you translate the bible to an attack on the Word itself. For example when asked to show where trinity is defined in the bible, and you can't point to a single creed being found in the bible. You point to verses that say God is one and other verses that says there is no other god... Then you proceed to translate those words into what your church and belief say they mean to us today. You derive from some verses your creeds and then when faced with verses that seem to counter that, like Christ's body/baptism and Steven's vision, you once again must translate it to fit your creeds. This isn't usual or even wrong, pretty much all the churches that use the bible do this. You seem to have equated your translation and understanding to being the Word. Again that works for you, but when you come on to a forum primarily populated by a group that claims as an Article of Faith... We believe the bible to be THE WORD OF GOD, as far as it it TRANSLATED CORRECTLY. Then you need to be prepared to separate what the Word says from what you translated to say, and be prepared to defend the accuracy of your translation. As LDS we read the same Word of God in the form of the bible as you do. Due to our belief that god has continued to call prophets and apostles as he established that he does in the bible, we also have modern revelation. We claim that this give us a superior understanding of the intent and meaning of the Word of God, because the prophet and apostles can talk right to the source of the Word. You don't agree with this, and again that is fine. God has set up prayer and the Holy Spirit as his way of knowing, but that is also personal and private. That leaves just a debate about accuracies of various translations to talk about on the forums
  2. Communication It has been shown that a big part of successful communication involves understanding and responding to non verbal cues. In essence while the words you say are important, how they are said makes all the difference. The exact same words said with different tone, facial expressions, and other things can change the very same words from neutral, to sarcastic, to funny to mean. The non verbal side is so important that in the real word people who can't process them for what ever reason are seen to have a disorder or some kind of social disability. (The autism spectrum of disorders, including Asperger syndrome come to mind. Not that I mean in anyway to belittle the trials those people face by what I say next) Now lets take that little tid bit and apply it to our situation. We are on an internet forum that transfers exactly what we type. The words we choose. It, however, by its very nature strips out most if, not all of the non verbal cues we so desperately depend on to communicate intent and meaning. Now you might be thinking that I am full of crap at this point because I am implying that the internet makes everyone have a externally applied social disorder, when it is clear that people can, do and have, used the internet for effective communication. And you would have a good point. I see one reason for that given the clear limits of the system. People fill in the blanks with their own experiences and expectations. Writers through the ages have shown that people can use just words express themselves, those writers put a lot of time, talent, and effort in choosing their words and how to express themselves, to get the job done in guiding others to the fill in the blanks pretty closely. But most of us aren't writers... We write the way we speak, because we know what we mean and it is crystal clear in our head. This works when people fill in the blanks or correctly or close enough. When different people with different experiences fill in the gaps differently we have problems. What appears to be so clear and simple to us, in our minds, aren't so clear to others because of this. And people then appear to us to be combative, stubborn, clueless, all because they didn't catch the non existent non verbal cues and there is a good chance if they are not understanding you then you are not understanding them. So it cycles around and around each trying to use a bigger hammer pound home their point which in their minds is perfectly clear and the other person must be too dense, stubborn, stupid or trollish not to see it, until either someone gets tired of it or the Mods shut it down. And this is just one factor, that makes thing interesting around here. We also have legitimate trolls, and others who are just here to fight. This doesn't help with people filling in the blanks incorrectly, when such assumptions have been right in the past.

  4. Yes we really mean it... Please excuse me but I am going to take this post as a chance for a educational moment... At the top right of every post is a red triangle with a ! in it. This is the report this post to the Moderators button. When you click on it you will be allowed to post a short message explaining why you felt the post was questionable. This 'report' goes to the mods. No one else sees it, nothing happens to the existing post, there is no thread derailment. The mods will see it and discuss it and act or not as we feel necessary. So why should you use it??? Because the mods are human, we have other things going on in our lives, we have our own biases and quirks. We are also out numbered by the regular members by a large margin. When we log in there can be a lot of stuff to look over. Reporting is a big flag that gets our attention. It also allows you to make a point in case we haven't considered the post in a certain point of view.
  5. Fasting has many purposes... Some of the things to look for in a replacement... Requires the use of and development of Self Control. For those in sound medical condition fasting does not endanger health, but it does require the reining in of a very 'natural man' type of impulse. Then there is prayer... I have heard people say that fasting without prayer is just starving yourself... there is probably some truth to that. Change the dragging dread of giving something up that you like into a willing sacrifice to the Lord. That is not easy either, which is why we practice. As for what you can use to replace it that is a trickier question, because each person is different. I would recommend a self assessment. Find some beams or motes in your character that you would be better off without and prayerfully pick one to work on.

  8. This is where learning how to communicate comes in. Many have offered ways to try there are others out there too. If you can let it go and I mean truly let it go, and not have it fester in your soul, that is a good option. But otherwise you've got to find a method of communication that gets it out there so that it can be dealt with. Without pulling in additional baggage. I-statements can help with that I-statement - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Active Listening can help you with the 'feeling heard' part Active listening - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Both require practice by both sides to get into a good spot.
  9. Girlgirl... Sounds like you and your husband need to learn how to express yourselves and how you feel without coming off as attacking or blaming the other. This is not an easy or natural skill for a lot of people. It takes effort learn how on both sides. My wife and I just got through taking a Church offered Strengthening Marriage Class which covered this and many other things I thought was quite helpful. I was hoping to find the manual online and point you and your husband toward it. The lessons and homework could make for very good Family Home Evenings for a young couple without kids. But I can't find it in the LDS.org manual section. Check to see if it is available in your ward. If not take a look through the various relationship books on communication. The basic recommendations on how to communicate well are out there.
  10. I think a better case could be made for romance novels then your generic "chic flicks"
  11. Do understand that negative experiences tend to have more impact then just basics or nice ones. If we have one really negative experience with a group and have 20 civilized ones... Its the negative one that carries more weight and has the greater impact. It take a lot more nice ones to balance it out. This is the lens that Mormons view anti-Mormon acts and other churches. It doesn't matter if they intended to lie, it only matters that they did. Of course this does work in both directions... It only take one Mormon being a jerk to sour a lot of people of other faiths against us as well.
  12. Remember a sealing is not a guarantee... It is a conditional blessing based on being faithful to the Lord and to the Marriage. Sounds as if the later might already be broken if she is doubting it like you say. Still repentance and rebuilding it is always possible. That is the spiritual side of this The other side is from a church ordinance view... a cancellation or clearance is not really granted until one of the two is ready to marry someone else in the temple. So even if a civil divorce where to happen a cancellation or clearance will not automatically follow
  13. When I read the Bible I read stories about how god calls Prophets (and after Christ Apostles which are just prophets that are also witnesses to Christ' resurrection) These prophets are the ones that God entrusts his word too. These prophets are who God uses to reach out to reclaim his people. To correct them of the errors that have crept in to the traditions and the written word, wither they be from misunderstanding or deliberate errors. Its not that we have a 'greater reliance' on living prophets. It's that we believe in the Biblical gold standard of how God works. He calls prophets. They give the Word of God as God gives it to them. People find it wise to write it down. This is how we got the Bible in the first place. This is also how we got the Book of Mormon and other books LDS consider scripture. Given how much other Christians claim to believe the bible where are do they say God's prophets and Apostles are today? Us LDS can give you the names of whom we believe they are. And we feel they are just as important to us in our day as Noah was in his, Moses was in his, and Peter, Paul, John, Matthew etc were in theirs. In the end we feel our greater reliance on prophets is precisely what the Bible instructs
  14. ihaveaquestion... you should be aware that having two accounts is against the rules here and can get both account banned.
  15. Nope... I read the linked article. There does seem to be some serious doubts the accuracy of the claims made in the books otherwise such an article wouldn't really be needed. Abuse is a highly emotionally charged issue. Just as much as people would like to think it never happens and try to deny it, it does happen. But it is also that emotional charge that makes people like to deny that anyone would ever lie about being abused, but that also can happen. As to which of the two is the case here... I simply don't know. It seems to have potential to go either way.
  16. Except the guy who is making his living telling the story. He has a vested interest in it been seen as true. Call me a cynic because while I know terrible thing like abuse happen.. Terrible things also happen in the name of greed. And I am not sure we can truly know which it might be with the current information.
  17. Simple... I was addressing why don't we spotlight it more... Our meeting are already full of teachings... If we want to add more then something had got to drop out or more time needs to be added. I was trying to help you see what might need to be done to enable a spot light like you requested.. Anyway looks like you got your answer so all is good
  18. You do realize that you reached your current understanding and stance based off what the church has taught you?? Right? As for spotlighting it more... Okay in the place of what? Do you want them to talk less about Christ? The atonement? Repentance? forgiveness? Service? Missionary work? Temple Work? Family history? Or would you prefer that the church adds another hour or two to the Sunday service? There is a very good reason the Church focuses on the basics and leaves the rest to personal study and conviction.
  19. And when this successful child grows up and decides to give their children additional help. By means of the money/connections they earned... then what?
  20. This thread was 3 and a half years old when it was restarted... The Restarted post was in violation of copyright Post deleted and thread closed
  21. Guys... we have expressly forbidden the discussion of any political candidates... and the current President is a Political Candidate. The Mods don't take this stance because we lean a particular way. We do it because it is requirement to keep LDS.net funded and up and running. So this thread is going to be close... All posts are going to be looked at and scrubbed or deleted as needed. And warning/infractions will go out to the offending parties. We would rather close the thread and ban a few members then lose the site entirely. This is not negotiable. If you can't live with that go elsewhere.

  23. Stephen, After 7 days of not have the Profiled verified it auto deletes. This deletion should have locked you out completely, but the system is a Hybrid and it looks like that didn't happen. Recreate your StephenVH account and try again. Once you do everything it prompts you (or when it just stops) Then use the Contact US link at the bottom and to the Right of every page. This will get you Pam and she will walk through the verification Manually. Once this is completed your account should be fully functional
  24. I fully confess that it was a flippant take on the parable given the context of the thread
  25. Well then I think you have as much of the 'facts' that we have on the subject. If you are looking for different opinion or interpretations then you might have to go abit farther afield then more typical Mormon circles.
