Question about free agency
estradling75 replied to questioning_seeker's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
In the premortal life we had agency. Part of the test in the premortal life was to see what we would do with it. I think it is pretty clear at that time we had a pretty strong foundation of proof or evidence of what god wanted us to do. And still quite a few chose differently. Those who chose wisely then got to advance to a harder form of the same test. We got a body to master and we still have to choose, but now its by faith -

Lets be clear for those who might be lurking or stumble across this later The question as it is written is a no brainer... We have taken upon ourselves the name of Christ, we belong to his church. We follow Christ. Period. What I think the OP is really trying to get to is what do we do when for some reason we start getting conflicting directions on what the will of Christ is for us. That a much more subtle and nuanced question which is the direction I think alot of people are taking the question. Lets not open this up to a debate on if Mormons follow Christ or not.

Eowyn's bumpersticker response
estradling75 replied to prisonchaplain's topic in Christian Beliefs Board
Prisonchaplain... This is the first time I have ever heard a evangelical talk about any thing beyond being saved... Must less something that requires effort. (Admittedly I don't talk to many evangelicals) Can you expand on the evangelical's understanding of the crown of righteousness? I know we have some serious differences like Trinity/Godhead, but I am wondering if much more of our differences are more because of a difference in focus and terminology. -
An unchangeable God... Christ is God... Before Christ was born of Mary what was he? After? Then after his death? Then after his resurrection? Christ was a spirit... Then took on a human body with mortal frailties... Then lost that body... Then gained a perfect glorified body. That sounds like a lot of changes for a God you claim can't have ever changed...

And see Vort's response... As for not believing the D&C that ok... You can feel free to use anything that you will claim as being scripture support your claims even if I don't accept them... Its only fair

You defined the trinity as You also say I am asking you to cite your revelation. And while I admit I might not have been clear before I meant your revelation aka scripture need to be more then simple proclaiming that god is ONE I did... I will again Physical form The Scriptures D&C 130 : 22 The Father has a body of flesh and bones as tangible as man’s; the Son also; but the Holy Ghost has not a body of flesh and bones, but is a personage of Spirit. Were it not so, the Holy Ghost could not dwell in us. Steven's vision of the Father and the Son Jesus's baptism with the Father speaking from Heaven, and the Holy Ghost with the sign of the Dove I find that to be very clear... Now the oneness They are one is purpose and plan and execution The scriptures John 17:11 And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are. Repeated again in verse 22 Then the scriptures show this being fulfilled in several places in the New Testament... Every time the scripture say they acted in One Accord mainly in the book of Acts That is the Revelations and understanding that we Mormons have on the nature of God. Now show us were is it clearly revealed that God Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit three personalities in the same body?

Doctrine and Covenants 91

First you say Mormons are confused understanding because of our doctrine.. Then you turn around and say gods nature is a mystery and that the mortal minds can't understand it which means you can't understand it either... Not a very strong position. The Mormon position is very easy and it come by what we believe to be direct revelation Doctrine and Covenants 130:22 The mystery that we truly don't get is how tight their oneness in purpose really is, while remaining physical separate. That is something we can only vaugely grasp and make analogys for Please show where the trinity, as you defined it in your last post, is defined in just as clear detail in the bible. And you need to do better then basic scriptures proclaiming that they are one.

We have... The Young Man choose to go inactive. The whys and whatfores on the reasoning for going inactive are lesser important to understanding and making a judgement on that fact... The other fact is girl choose to say she can't be around him. The whys and whatfores on the reasoning for her saying that are very critical to understanding what is going on and making a judgement. If you assume (which you seem to) that her uncle broke confidence which lead to her saying that... then yeah that is bad. But if she said it for any one of the half dozen or so other possibilities suggested then their is nothing wrong.

It does... Start with the Book of Mormon... It is tangible evidence of Joseph Smith's claims. It gives you something you can touch, read, study and pray about. And don't dismiss it 'based solely on.' During the days of Noah those that boarded the Ark did it based solely on believing that Noah was a prophet of god. The children of Israel followed Moses based on believing he was a prophet. In Peter's day the gospel went to the Gentiles based on the strength the belief that Peter had the vision and was God's chosen to lead.

Found the perfect guy, but...
estradling75 replied to jellybelly's topic in Marriage and Relationship Advice
Tell him... the exact timing is up to you but it should be once you reach the point you are both talking about getting married. (Its one of those pre-marriage talks you should have) Why should you tell him? Simple, it is going to come out at some point. If he finds out you aren't what he was expecting you to be (especially after marriage) from some other way its going to look like deception, betrayal, and lies. You don't want that. It could destroy everything you have built with him. He needs to hear it from you. Then he needs to be given time to come to terms with it and decide what he wants to do. He might choose to break it off with you. If so that simply tells you more about him and how far along he is on being Christ-like. -
Why do we believe in Eternal Family? Because the scriptures say so.. Doctrine and Covenants 131 and Doctrine and Covenants 132 We accept modern revelation. And we consider the two links provided above as scripture equal in authority to any other scripture you have quoted.

A while back there was an article about how the Mayan calendar was translated in to ours to get the dates.. I beleive they said it could be off by as much as a hundred years. I can see if I can dig up the article again if people are interested. Anyways its based on the Mayan 5000+ plus year long count calender starting over... The closest we come to something like that is when the year 2000 came around. And we all remember how that went.

When it comes to the question of how many chances a spouse should get no one here can give you a hard and fast answer. We can't do this because the correct answer can only be received through personal revelation. You need to take it to the Lord in prayer. Now many on the forum can offer advice (some might be less friendly then others), support, understanding, and sympathy. But for your main question that is something you have to answer for yourself.
-
Well doesn't that answer your own question about how immediate it is? Christ wasn't immediately taken back to that god that gave him life on his death... So why would we?
-
I think you missed the point he was trying to make. There are many other out there more then willing to say hateful things about the LDS church including calling us a cult. Because of this we would like and strongly encourage those who are looking to learn more about us to come and talk to us directly. Let us tell you, not some who we see as a bitter, twisted, and apostate exes. If that is what we wish for ourselves and our faith then it would be a little bit hypocritical for us to then say that it is perfectly ok for you go to the bitter, twisted, and apostate exes of other churches to learn more about the other churches.

Unfortunately the laws don't give bishops or other youth workers that kind of leeway... Its to be reported period. And then police and legal system are to deal with it. With all the fallout and problems connected with legal inquiry.

NonMember & Member Marriage :: Ultimatum
estradling75 replied to dramirez's topic in Marriage and Relationship Advice
Nope... First the Book of Mormon teaches that what ever attitudes and thought processes we have when we leave this life will be what we have in the next. For example someone who is strongly anti-god and pro-science will clearly have some issues with life after death once they are 'living' it. But they will not by default turn to god. They will instead turn to science and have a whole new theories and ideas to explain what is going on. In many ways until the final judgement, death is just an continuance of our test and trials that we are to face.- 31 replies

While I agree on the individual level... I am actually a bit pleased to see this type of story. Please before you flame me hear out the rest. Imagine how this girls story could have played out 5, 10, or even 15 years ago. If you are imagining a much worst situation for the girl, her spirituality, and her ability to trust leaders then we are on the same page. Yes the bishop made a bad mistake. But it is being acknowledged as a bad mistake that went counter to Church counsel and instruction. The girl is going to have some issues to deal with because of this but it is not compounded by the idea that the Church didn't care and tried to cover it up. Bishops are human and will make mistakes, but I would expect that story like this will help this type of mistake less and less common. If this helps with that then some good will come of this. While this is cold comfort for the people involved, as an uninvolved third party I see this as forward progress toward where we really want to be.

Frustrated with husband's addiction...
estradling75 replied to JaneDoe's topic in Marriage and Relationship Advice
Good. While I don't necessarily jump to the same conclusion as Eowyn as to why he wanted to be alone, it does seem to be a bit off. But once he expressed that desire the fact that you ran right over the top of it to do what you wanted... well there are only so many ways a guy might take that. The biggest one that I think is most likely is that he thinks that you don't care about his thoughts, feelings or desires. Then the rest of the weekend could very well have been a simple tit for tat response. A 'if you don't care about me, why should I care about you.' Its not healthy or good response. But it is very human one.
