  1. Since there really is no valid argument that smoking Marijuana is not against the Word of Wisdom when it clearly is, this thread has gone on long enough. We're done here.
  2. I can't believe the rampant bigotry on this thread. All you women know that deep down inside you wish you didn't have to wax your own mustaches.
  3. What, you've never watched Revolution? Monroe IS the state.
  4. I have to admit, I just tuned in to read this thread, and it's already past time to close it. (Yeah, I decided that long before I read your post, Maureen.)
  5. Let me get this straight. You were threatened with excommunication based upon letters that you don't know the contents of? Or, were you told that if the allegations are true they would be excommunicable offenses? I am admittedly no expert on these kinds of matters, but it seems to me that most Stake Presidents don't just engage in excommunication without convening the Stake High Council and allowing you, the accused, the full opportunity to admit, explain, or refute the allegations.
  6. Even if you get the church records, what are you hoping to find? Proof that you haven't had official church discipline? I highly doubt letters to a bishop would be entered in some file kept by the church.
  7. I choose not to. I see it as similar to shopping on the Sabbath unnecessarily. My view is that if you feel your body needs the exercise on Sunday, try to do something that does not require an employee of a business to work also. Go outside and take a brisk walk or jog, or buy some basic exercise equipment that you can use at home on the Sabbath.
  8. Is she under 20? Those are the only people I know who actually say 'OMG' as if it's a real word.
  9. Nope. Employees at a car dealership.
  10. I was in a meeting with Larry Miller once. He went on an unbelievable tirade, telling people that if they couldn't get the job done he would fire all of them and hire new guys for less money.
  11. The only one of those I have heard of is John Bytheway. I think it would be weird to ask someone to stare in a movie. I can only stare for like a minute before it starts to hurt my eyes.
  12. I have one that's 4 years old and one that's 6. The 4-year old is standard height, but the older one sits about 3-4 inches higher making it easier to stand up after using it.
  13. Okay, I'm confused. So you're saying that the reason Argentina wants the Falklands is because there are 30,000 people missing from the islands? That's quite a large number considering there are less than 3,000 people living on those islands. And you're positive that there isn't any oil in their territorial waters that the Argentines would want? Because I just read a page on wikipedia (admittedly not a great source) that claims there may be as much as 60 billion barrels of oil there. Wow, someone screwed up on that report, didn't they?
  14. I think the residents should be able to determine whose rule they should be under. It seems to me once upon a time I heard that there is more to this fight than just a small island, something to do with rich natural resources under the water. I believe that is what Argentina is really after. If it weren't for those resources, Argentina likely wouldn't care about the islands very much.
  15. Trib commenters are among the most vile people on earth.
  16. I'll be looking for that headline in the Salt Lake Tribune today. It won't surprise me if I see it.
  17. #1, as has been pointed out, every memeber has the charge to be a missionary. #2, you're right, most full-time missionaries are either 18-22 or 55-65 years old. This is because most members in the intervening years of age are encouraged to be working on their marriages and raising children. #3, every ward has ward missionaries called to do missionary work as they are able to in their local area. These are the middle-aged people who have jobs and do the work as their time allows.
  18. This is true. The preachers I've seen doing this are very passionate.
  19. Complete with pulpit pounding and getting worked up with heavy breathing?
  20. Here's my take on what he said: I believe that what he was saying is that he was acknowledging that most religions are based on some kernel of truth. Christians, for example, base their beliefs in Jesus Christ. However, as the ancient Apostles and Disciples died off and revelations from God ceased, churches turned to filling in the gaps and questions of doctrine with the teachings of men and logic based on the fragments of scriptures and truths that were passed down from generation to generation, until the truths, while eternally true, were lost, misinterpreted or changed to fit mens' understandings. I see Protestantism's beginnings as an effort to realize that the original Church had moved away from Biblical teachings in many aspects, to the point where some felt they had no choice but to openly oppose the Church and start their own churches which they felt more closely followed the Bible. As I said before, we LDS believe that most Christian denominations have some truth, and their followers earnestly follow that truth to the best of their abilities. We don't wish to diminish those eternal truths which those denominations have taught and held on to. What we wish to do is to take those truths and add to them with the benefit of our additional scriptures and the guidance of living Prophets who commune directly with God and Christ and deliver pertinent information from them to us. As part of that process of adding truth, we aim to help people see that perhaps the things they thought were true when they had only part of the truth are actually somewhat different when viewed with the lens of having the complete true Gospel. I liken it to one of those detective TV shows. Detectives take certain actions and make allegations based on partial evidence, but the more information they get, the clearer the picture gets until eventually they come to a more complete understanding of events surrounding the case. We see ourselves as having more information to gain a better understanding of the Gospel of Christ. And now we want to share that added information to others who will listen.
  21. I don't have any exact instances to relate, but I hear someone say something similar at least every other week. We in the LDS Church dissect and examine scripture and the Principles of the Gospel far more than most outsiders would think we do. We recognize that every person is on a different spiritual plane and the scriptures are beautiful in the sense that no matter what spiritual plane you are on, we can all find something worth applying to our lives in them. And then there is the factor of how, with our different books of scrtipture, they don't disagree with each other but each one helps us flesh out or better understand concepts taught in another volume. They enhance our understanding and give us new ideas or insights that we hadn't considered before.
