Absolutely. And we should be grateful and apply the instructions that we have received. This does not absolve us of our responsibilities to seek further light and knowledge from God on how best to apply these things in the lives of each of our children.

One of the things I have learned in my years as a parent is that every person is an individual. The only truth I can add to the discussion is that parents need to seek guidance from God in how best to raise, teach, love, guide, and help each individual child in their care.

It's a formal part of the name.

April 2018 General Conference To me, it sounds like the changes being made are for the very purpose of strengthening the saints to be able to survive spiritually in the coming days.

Considering how many times you have posted in this topic, @MormonGator, I am starting to wonder if someone will be petitioning the prophet for the next big change announcement for the April 2019 General Conference.... 🚭

Private contractor for Homeland Security and was (at one point) working on a criminal justice degree. I was requested multiple times to take a job with the state of Utah to work with adult probation and parole as a result of going with them on their in-home visits so often. (At their requests.) In the end, I felt that Heavenly Father wanted me in a different profession and so I moved on from government work. In terms of divine protection, for the five years I worked with the government, I never once had a physical altercation. I was the only one with my company who didn't. Drug arrests, removal of perps from properties, armed offenders, and some very dangerous situations, but it was always resolved with talking. (And sometimes yelling...) I never even had to draw my firearm. Although I was a combatives instructor, the Lord always blessed me to de-escalate the situation with words. I have my concealed carry permit and do carry on occasion, but when I bought the gun I prayed and felt that I would never need to use it.

In recent years, law enforcement has really had to rethink its strategies on how to deal with various situations. You now have mass shooters, jihadists with potential exploding vests, protesters with chains and clubs, all combined with your always standard armed and unarmed robbers and burglars. (This list is clearly not meant to be comprehensive.) Each of these situations requires a completely different approach in trying to deal with the threat. What works in one situation is completely the wrong approach in a different situation. As someone who has been trained and has done the training for these types of situations, I can somewhat understand the hesitation some people have with armed citizens trying to deal with these situations. Even highly trained professionals make the wrong call sometimes in how to respond. That being said, protection of life really is everyone's own responsibility. As the saying goes, "when seconds count, the authorities are minutes away." They are called first "responders" for a reason. They will show up to clean up the mess where violence has already occurred. I would encourage everyone to pray and learn for themselves what God expects them to do in their lives. And then remember that not every individual is going to get the same answer. There is enough room in the church pews for lambs and sheepdogs to sit next to each other. We are all part of the Master's flock.

For every "keep the Sabbath Day holy" there is an equal justification to get your ox out of the mire. Just as the Anti-Nephi-Lehies were justified in refusing to take up the sword, the Nephites were equally justified in defending their families even if meant taking the life of another. The truth is that each of us should take the Holy Spirit as our guide and decide what the Lord wants us to do individually. This could even change on a day to day, case by case basis. I admire the courage exhibited by those who take up arms in defense of others! I also admire the courage of those who choose to exercise restraint in such circumstances, if they feel that this is what the Lord would have then to do.

You should reread the OP's first post. This was a stake leadership training being given at a stake level. That falls clearly within the stake president's stewardship to give whatever training he feels would be best for the members/leaders of the stake. If he feels that multiple wards are going "beyond the mark" with the planning of their activities, then it falls within his stewardship to warn and encourage those who are leaders/advisors in the wards. Does he have the the ability to receive revelation for the stake to which he is called to preside? It sounds like the time when he was previously "warned" was due to actually attempting to plan the program for a particular ward's primary.

That is a bold accusation. You are saying that he purposely is trying to get away with something he knows is contrary to the area leadership's desires?

The OP clearly stated that this was a training done on the stake level, not just a ward level, in her first post. It is not out of the ordinary for a member of the stake presidency to attend and even contribute to the specific training being given to the ward auxiliaries during the stake leadership training breakout session. This could especially be true if their is an item of major concern or importance that they hope to reinforce across the stake. Likewise, the message being presented was clearly in harmony with what is taught in the handbook. I believe your accusation of a stake president being "disobedient" on these grounds is a bit extreme and also incorrect.

Interesting. To me this is simple. It will more greatly bless the lives and families of the faithful. Those who might be less faithful will either fade away or they will recognize that the Spirit is with them less than before and choose to repent. There is also the hope that due to something being thought of as fresh, new, and exciting might just inspire a few folks to repentant obedience. Regardless, I am very excited about the potential spiritual growth from this new program for my family.

As someone who grew up outside of Utah and lived there for only a few years, the "must see" list is really church focused, mountain focused, and then etc. in that order. Church - Temple Square is truly THE prime place you need to visit. Lots buildings and things to look at and learn. Be sure to go over and check out the conference center while there. Mountains - The mountains are all around you obviously. If you have done the "must see" church options I listed, then drive up a mountain and pull over so you can look out over the valley. Doing this during the day is almost a different experience than nighttime. Once those things have been accomplished, THEN feel free to check out some of the other suggested options. But these comprise the "must see" Utah experience in Salt Lake for me.
