It is a book focusing on Emma’s personal history, a topic only lightly touched on by official church publications (though it is reasonably so, she didn’t keep a journal so most we (think we) know comes from 2nd/3rd/4th hand accounts).

I read this book a year or so ago and I actually enjoyed it, thought it was a welcome approach to everything when compared to the typical literature we get from the church. But it wasn’t till recently that it wasn’t at Deseret book and I haven’t actually met many people that are familiar with it. What is the Consensus of this book? Was it written with Ill intentions? Was it just written in a time when talking about those topics was taboo?

Interesting question! I think the answer to that is where the anxiety comes from. If the anxiety is stemmed from feelings of wanting to fit in, look good, keep up with the Jones’ or other similar aspects than no. Any kind of debilitating anxiety that needs help from therapists or medicine to be controlled is not linked to faith. But anxiety over the salvation of our fellow man or our need to repent is linked to faith, though should it get out of hand and we cannot function due to it, I would say we are straying into unhealthy territory.

It really comes down to what you believe. This really has become a political issue and not a health issue. when all is said and done, individual’s chosen sources of news will be spun to show they were correct. I, of course, take the conservative side and think this is all slightly concerning hullabaloo. But certainly not serious enough to take such drastic measures.

Just got back from home depot I’m southern Utah. The place was pretty packed and only saw 5-6 face masks (except for the employees, they all wore masks). as a side note, I know one of the 3 covid deaths, it was a 90+ year old lady with a bunch of other health issues. She most certainly did not die due to covid, yet was counted.

Let me make one thing clear, Southern Utah has done VERY LITTLE in terms of quarantine. To say we were successful just drives our thoughts on it home. We must be getting our news from different source. I have heard and read that hospitals are encouraged to attribute deaths to c-19 cause it increases their funding. There have been many cases where someone dies because of a heart defect, but because they have c-19, they report it as that to show they are also in need of precious emergency funding. The idea that hospitals are not counting every possible death as a c-19 death seems wrong and against human nature. I also read that a month ago, they started counting antibodies (a somewhat unreliable way of seeing if someone had the virus or not) in LA and New York. They found that 2.5 million people in NY had c-19 anti bodies, bringing death rate down to 0.2% I think the biggest tell for how ridiculous this all is is the lack of celebrity deaths. The news can say “6% death rate” and “Millions are going to die from this” and we just have to take their word for it, but when we see entire basketball teams, politicians, celebrities, etc. getting c-19 and only a handful age 60-100 years old of them dying due to c-19 “complications”, it’s hard to think that this is serious. Additionally, there this 20 minute video floating around, that YouTube has since taken down, of civilian reporters exposing the lies we were seeing in the news. 20 minutes of these 15 second - 1 minute long clips of people comparing the media’s claims to reality. some examples include: Media: they are setting up temporary mass Morgues in the streets for all the deaths civilian reporter: showing the same “mass morgues” The media showed and they were just emergency treatment stations and had long been vacant. Media: Lines wrapping around the block as people scramble to get the aid they need. Civilian reporter: at same location the next day... but it is an empty parking lot Media: Ambulances in X city are being over used and they don’t have time to get to everyone civilian reporter: in same city showing a hospital parking garage full of idle ambulances Media: look at all these scary picture of covid-19 stuff Civilian Reporter: showing that there are dozens of reused stock videos from years earlier during other sickness and non-sickness related events that they are using as c-19 propaganda. It’s going to take a lot to convince me this is not some slippery slope that the media found themselves in. I agree this is probably worst than the flu in many ways (as more people will get it and die from it)... but we should just quarantine the “at risk” people instead of killing our economy. Or the government can just keep passing stimulus checks that I can use on cool toys, either or I guess (I actually used it to pay off the rest of our debt. We definitely did not need it).

I have some great (x6ish) grandparents that were individually taking the missionary discussions in secret. Both accepted baptism and showed up at the baptism location only to run into each other. I can’t imagine the happiness they both felt when they saw each other. I also have a grandfather who was quite adventurous. He ran a large steam boat between South America and Africa for some years. He has two interesting hunting stories. Once he was I. The jungle and his guide yelled “Run Johannes!”, my grandfather turned and saw a massive snake chasing his guide and they had to sprint out of the jungle, I think he ended up killing the snake. Another time he was hunting chimps. He shot one out of a tree and immediately a dozen other monkeys appeared and just stared him down as if they were all about to attack, it nothing happened.

My dad baptized 40+ people in Brazil and he said he only knows of a few that are active. Similar story of a buddy of mine. He had 20 baptisms in one day, all of which are inactive now. this is all second hand, so I don’t know the truth, just what I hear.

I’m not even convinced retention rate is a measure of “success”. That is obviously the goal, but souls are not statistics, and we have little control over agency.

And I would add that no, going to BYU t get married is not a bad thing. Marriage is a worth while thing to pursue. Though I do believe there are cheaper options. Try some of the Latter-day Saint dating sites/apps. Honestly no shame in that.

I haven’t met anyone in my life that truly believes that, so lucky for you that isn’t a concept that came from Utah or Idaho. You have to understand something. A girl who grows up striving to be Obedient sacrificing what is expect for the cause of Christ expects the same out of who she will marry. We all have to make sacrifices to serve God, some harder than others. A strong work ethic is great, but it does not make up for a slack on obedience to God, which is an essential trait we must all have. And you will be going to a school where nearly every guy has the same traits you are boasting about. You can’t be mad when a fantastic, righteous girl finds you unattractive when she learns you didn’t follow the prophets commandment you prepare to serve a mission. That being said, I am sure there are plenty of wonderful girls at either school that you would find compatible, just don’t go their raging every time someone turns you down due to your lack of mission experience, especially if you are still an age where a mission is possible (younger than 26). You need to find someone who you are equally yoked with spiritually, that of course means that due to your refusal to serve a mission, there will be girls there that are ahead of you spiritually and won’t date you simply cause she would drag you Behind her spiritually. And don’t misinterpret me here, I served an honorable full mission and there are still women that are ahead of me spiritually that wouldn't date me. To really be over this frustrating experience you are having, I would suggest applying to serve a full mission. Let the lord decide if you are physically able. And to clarify something, it wasn’t till the 70s (I believe) that it was expected for all young men to serve missions. So yes they would. It isn’t a matter of serving a mission, it’s a matter of obedience. “The question has been often asked, Is the mission program one of compulsion? And the answer, of course, is no. Everyone is given his free agency. The question is asked: Should every young man fill a mission? And the answer of the Church is yes, and the answer of the Lord is yes. Enlarging this answer we say: Certainly every male member of the Church should fill a mission, like he should pay his tithing, like he should attend his meetings, like he should keep his life clean and free from the ugliness of the world and plan a celestial marriage in the temple of the Lord” (Spencer W. Kimball, “Planning for a Full and Abundant Life”, Ensign, May 1974, 86). So to answer your question, yes they would marry them.

You will have trouble finding a righteous daughter of God if you yourself are not righteous. Did you not serve a mission cause you didn’t want to or you committed a grievous sin? or did you not serve a mission for a justifiable reason (medical/physical limitations as prescribed by the church prior to applying to serve)? If a mission is still an option for you, you should do it. But if not, and you didn’t avoid serving a mission, there will be plenty of young women interested in Dating you

You make a great point here. Charity, and service are very important, but the true reward and purpose of these things is to become more Christlike. If the government is taking the money from you and forcefully giving it to the poor, the whole concept of charity is lost.
