'Back in the day' is this not how nearly everyone prayed?  Even beside that, shouldn't it be normal to understand how this type of language is used if one reads the scriptures on a regular basis?

There you go again, asserting that you know the mind of God. The more you talk, the less I believe that.
Many apostles of the Lord have suggested that the "technical rule" you rail against is a good idea. Their reasoning makes sense to me. Yours does not. Do you have any particular reasons why we should accept your less-logical word over their more-logical teachings?

My children all pray with "thou", "thee", "thy", and "thine". Simple and plain. I do the same.

    Yes.
Somewhere, there was a GA talk about not explicitly trying to form a special relationship with one member of the Godhead over the others.  (But I can't go hunt for it now.  Perhaps someone else remembers...)
IMO, we worship the Father, in the name of the Son (and through his grace), and receive their will, guidance, and blessings through the gift of the Holy Ghost.

The gift to discern spirits is not so much related to communicating with them as to being able to distinguish by revelation from the Holy Ghost if someone is teaching, performing miracles, etc, by the true Spirit of God, or if it is by an evil spirit of the devil.  This gift can be given to anyone for an extended time or one time use, however, an individual who possess this gift continually would use it to warn others of dangers concerning groups or individuals in the world who would cause them either temporal or spiritual harm.  A real life example/application was given by Niel L. Anderson as follows:
    You also asked:
The spiritual gift applicable to this question would be, “The beholding of angels and ministering spirits” (Spiritual Gifts - Moroni 10:14)  This gift would presumably not be something upon which the individual could call upon to use, but rather that the Lord could use on a regular basis to bless the individual and/or others.  On my mission, an individual who was baptized, had become a very faithful member of the church but often had difficulty changing certain behaviors.  He told us of many occasions when he had visions and was visited by Moroni and others, usually to encourage him to change a behavior.  In one specific case he didn't feel the need to clean up his language, and recounted how he was visited by a ministering spirit who told him to read Matt. 15:18 which says "But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man."  He immediately repented and made the applicable changes to his habits.
These two gifts come hand in hand,  If you personally had the gift of discerning of spirits, and spoke with this individual who claimed experience through the gift of beholding of spirits, your gift to discern would be able to indicate to you if he was visited by a true spirit from God, or was deceived by a lying spirit of the devil.

If you are concerned it will affect his decision making process, I would consider not telling him.  If you must tell him, perhaps wait until he has already been serving his mission for a few months, had some great experiences, and then tell him.  I would also recommend doing it in a passive nonchalant way.  Something along the lines of, "Hey, I really like you, I know you feel the same from what you said before, if I am still single when you get back we should go out again ".  If you know he's dedicated and he's serving no matter what then you can immediately proceed to follow the steps I have previously outlined here.

D&C 119:4 is the fulcrum of the subject, but often ignored are the preceding verses.
    Then the subsequent verse:
The Lord intended to redeem His people. A Zion people is required. Once a member consecrated his surplus property, this was only the beginning of the tithing of God's Zion people. We don't do that anymore. And we don't even understand "interest annually" either.
"A standing law unto them forever."
The term forever is pretty clear to me. We covenant to obey the law of consecration in the temple, but we are not provided means to do so. In order to be a redeemed people, we must be a Zion people. This requires us to have NO poor among us. If we cannot make ourselves equal in temporal things, the Lord will not make us equal in heavenly things and so we must learn to care for the poor and that is what the tithing of the Lord's people is intended to do.
Joseph Smith understood the purpose of tithing as did Abraham of old:
Abraham gave his surplus property as the beginning of his tithe, just as we read is God's standing law forever in D&C 119. And because Abraham did what God required (no more, no less, but precisely), God blessed Abraham with riches, honor, etc, which was God's covenant to him. When we learn to obey God the way God prescribes, He blesses us. But not if we improvise. It doesn't work that way. Cain thought he could do it with his offering, but God refused it because it was not the way God prescribed. It isn't about receiving gross blessings or net blessings. It's about elevating the poor by consecrating our property and making ourselves equal in temporal things so that God can make us equal in heavenly things.

Yes and no.  Since most people borrow to buy a house, the ability to borrow money inflates housing prices, i.e. if no one could borrow to buy a house, housing prices would collapse like a rock.  People would still buy homes, but their prices would not be so high.  This is self-evident with the housing bubble in 2008 and the echo-bubble of today.  More people with access to credit = higher prices.
That is why with inflation it gets harder to actually calculate what your increase is. If you buy for 100k and sell 10 years later for 300k and all you did was just live there, did you really get a increase or did the cost of everyone's home increase buy 200%. If everyone's home increased by 200% then unless you either downsize or sell your house to rent you have no increase.
That's why things get tricky.  Quite frankly, the natural order of things is for housing prices to decrease.  A house gets old, it needs repairs, it is no different than a vehicle.  No one buys a vehicle for an "investment", they buy it b/c they need it.  A house actually depreciates in cost, it is why if you own a rental home you get to deduct depreciation costs from the house.
The only reason you really make a nominal increase on a house is, a) you improved it somehow, b) you bought in an area that has seen lots of development and the demand in that particular area has now increased . . .
Housing, unlike most things is directly tied to two things, incomes and credit. If both of those is not increasing, housing nominal prices will fall, if they are increasing then prices will rise.

The IRS does not care how much you paid in interest when they calculate gain on the sale of a home.
Everyone has their own idea on what their "increase/interest" is which is why is is so vague.
You could argue that a house sold has no "increase" because there is no effective gain.  The house sold at market value and if I went to buy a similar home I would pay Market prices effectively having no gain at all.

I personally always give the standard, 'it's between you and the Lord' (because if I don't someone will inevitably come in and say, 'hey it's between them and the Lord! ).  However, I always follow after that with exactly how I would personally pay tithing in that situation.
Interestingly on this topic, ". . .'interest annually' which is understood to mean income" is not always accurate.  If you review the historical interpretation even in the Latter-Days, tithing was initially assumed to be on a person's surplus.  In the 1828 Dictionary with definitions as would have been understood in Joseph Smith's time interest is listed as profit, or surplus advantage (Webster 1828).  Even the early brethren expressed that tithing was to be paid on surplus (sources provided if requested).  That is also the revelation Joseph Smith received regarding Abraham in the inspired translation of the Bible:
That being said, I personally pay on my gross rather than net or surplus, but I subtract what I pay into my 401K and retirement accounts and Social Security because it will be easier to pay tithing on it as I receive/withdraw it than to calculate how much I put in vs how much I'm taking out when I retire and start withdrawing.
I think we should share with others how we pay it while also ensuring they understand that after they take the information that they receive from many sources they should still evaluate for themselves thoughtfully and prayerfully.

Too much of society seeks to validate homosexuality based on the theory that it is genetic, and if so the individual did not have a choice in the matter and so it should be accepted because it is 'natural'.  There are many decisions we must make each day that pertain to things that are out of our control, yet there is never sufficient justification for wrongdoing.
When one takes into consideration the Gospel of Jesus Christ and its doctrines, it does not matter one way or the other.  Whether the root of homosexuality lies in a genetic trait, a social development, a personal decision, or anything else, the only thing of real importance is that it is contrary to the commandments of God for an individual to act upon homosexual attraction.

There are approximately 5 million LDS in the Continental United States.  Of 300 million population that is roughly 1.7%.  It is estimated that 3% of the population is homosexual.  Members of the church are generally not in the norm/mainstream of societal thought. It can be argued that there are an equal if not greater number of the population who condemn the LDS Church and/or its members for one reason or another.  Why are we not committing suicide at the same rate?

Why in all these discussions of houses does everyone say they paid [some amount] which is clearly the market value, and later sold it for [some other amount] which is clearly the new market value, and never mention the interest paid on the loan, which, at the end of the day, is how much you really paid for the house?  (Just curious.)

Hey Rob, I don't believe that anyone said that time is nonexistent for God. Just to clarify, what I stated was:

"In fact, the opposite is true. ALL time exists for God at once, past, present, and future. That is scripturally based and confirmed through modern prophets."

Once again, you don't have to take my word for it. I encourage everyone to seek their own answers through prayer and study.

I find debate to typically entrench the parties further into their own views and therefore am not really interested in it.

"Like Laman and Lemuel, many today would consign God only to the past; He thereby ceases to be the constant God of yesterday, today, and tomorrow (see 2 Ne. 27:23). Actually, God has the past, present, and future ever before Him, constituting an 'eternal "now"' (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, sel. Joseph Fielding Smith [1976], 220; see also D&C 130:7)."

Also, ever since I saw your OP earlier today I have had the intention of posting some really interesting information about hypnotism because I have done some research on it and come to some conclusions that I think are fascinating and enlightening.  I will do my best to post it when I get home from work tonight.
