  1. My sister and her husband, both members and great people, struggle with this issue, among other things.
  2. This American does, and so do many others.
  3. Looking at the statistics that were shared, the chances of getting killed by a gun jump significantly when a Brit comes to the US. I can understand the hesitance. It's like swimming at one beach and then going to swim with friends at another beach where shark attacks are 3-4 times more likely. Still very small, but worth noting.
  4. And leaving a firearm in your car while at Church meetings wouldn't really affect any of these situations, except maybe natural disasters that blow cars away.
  5. https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/general-conference/2002/04/the-gospel-in-our-lives?lang=eng I just finished listening to this talk. It is often true that you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone. Since I've been excommunicated, I've begun to realize all the things I took for granted as a member. I wait with anticipation until I can take the sacrament, pay tithing, serve in a calling, even say prayers in church. If you are able, please participate and enjoy these blessings.
  6. I wish I knew @mirkwood well enough to give him a friendly jab about how often he's asked to leave
  7. I am really bad at expressing my thoughts in coherent sentences. It's a terrible weakness when participating in forums. What I was trying to do was make a comparison of leaving weapons at home during church services can be viewed similarly to the ANL's covenant. I'm not calling for all members to bury their guns. Just that by following the prophets counsel, we can be blessed.
  8. Just had a flashback of clapping to help wake up Tinkerbell.
  9. The Anti-Nephi-Lehites actually buried their weapons. Just food for thought.
  10. Thanks! Here's a few of the things I get from applying those verses to this thread. 1. If wearing pants causing others to fall, we should avoid it. 2. If something non-gospel related impacts my testimony, I should strengthen my testimony. 3. I wonder how tasty idol-food it.
  11. And a process for readmission. There IS a place (or enough room) for everyone in the Church. However, there are also requirements for joining, and for remaining, a member. Realistically speaking, not everyone will meet those standards. But that doesn't mean there isn't a place for them if/when they do. *group hug*
  12. My wife and I took the kids to see Dora last weekend. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. It's not a great movie, but it was a fun hour and a half.

    Wine

They say you are what you eat. I'm going to have to check and see if my wife has been cooking with w(h)ine, because my kids have done plenty of it the last two weeks since school started again.
  14. Can I petition for this thread to get locked? There was some great discussion, but it is derailed.
  15. I have such a weak stomach.....just reading about this stuff makes me queasy. Great article though. He's an amazing man.
  16. Because I was born on April 6th also, and my dad told me it was Jesus' birthday. But like @Vort referenced, he used the literal interpretation of D&C 20:1. https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/dc-testament/dc/20?lang=eng
  17. My reasons for feeling worthless are different, but premise behind this article resonates with me. Thank you!
  18. There is an idea in vulnerability studies of share, stop and check. (I'm not sure if that's the right terms, but it's how I remember it) When you are opening up with someone, it is good to share a little, then stop, see if you are ok with what you shared. Check with the person about how they feel, what they think. When you're both good, you can share more.
  19. I bet the people who run this site would love it if you wrote an article expressing a man's view on white shirts (on either side of the 'issue') I'd read it.
  20. I worry that I'm coming off as confrontational, and I'm really not trying to. I am trying to understand this. I re-read the article a couple times and I don't see it the way you do. She says she wants to dress how she feels confident and unique. Apparently that means pants for her. I don't see her saying that she's making a statement, or that other women should too or those that don't aren't expressing themselves.
  21. How I read your response ( Thanks for the tl;dr, the whole quote is long ((and appreciated)) ) So in 2011, no one cared. After 2012, women who want to wear pants shouldn't because it's associated with the One-Eyed, One-Horned Flying Purple Pants Wearers. It is unfortunate that the 'rebellious' chose such a simple article of clothing to represent their protest and that pants are now associated with apostasy. I can see how others are making that connection, although it seems a bigger leap to me. This whole thread reminds me of the meme I've seen a number of people post on Facebook about a woman who is going to leave the Church. She talks to her Bishop and says she can't take all the hypocrisy, back-biting, gossiping, one-up-manship of the other people. The Bishop asks her to carry a spoonful of water around the whole building without spilling a drop. She does this and reports back her success. The Bishop asked if she saw anyone acting in those horrible ways and she says "No, I was too focused on the water." He then compares that to how she should focus on Jesus Christ at church and not on other people. Even if a woman wears pants to church in support of the Purple Pants People, what will happen? Nothing, that I can tell.
  22. I still feel like I'm missing some commandment, directive, or suggestion. Is the "No pants" stance simply a reaction to the 2012 movement? If that hadn't happened would there be an issue? I am seriously confused by the reactions in this thread.
  23. She specifically says she wasn't offended.
  24. I did find this New Era article from 1974. Even then they didn't come out with a straight answer. The tldr summary is: Follow your local leadership. Which in the author's case, her bishop was fine with her wearing pants if it wasn't an act of rebellion or protest. https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/new-era/1974/12/q-and-a-questions-and-answers/when-and-where-is-it-acceptable-for-young-women-to-wear-pants-when-involved-in-church-related-activities?lang=eng
  25. I feel like I've missed something. Where does it say that women shouldn't wear pants to church? I found where sister missionaries are supposed to wear skirts or dresses to Sunday services, but not regular members. My work has casual Fridays, like a lot of offices. Jeans are only allowed then. However, I don't think jeans are comfortable. I opt to chose cargo pants when essentially everyone else wears jeans. I don't feel like I'm rebelling or making a statement. I think the author of this article has a similar view of dresses.
