  1. I think it would be helpful if we established what the law/principle of fasting actually is. https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/manual/gospel-principles/chapter-25-fasting?lang=eng From my understanding, it is going without food or water for a period of time. While it is common practice in the church to do a monthly fast of skipping two meals, I don't think that this is the law/principle. My dad likes to tell a story of when he was an Elder's Quorum President and was asked to meet with a general authority. They were looking for a new stake presidency and other stake and ward callings. In the invitation to the meeting, which was in an hour, he was asked if he was fasting. He had not been previously. He was told that it is not difficult to begin a fast. You don't have wait until the end of a fast to receive the blessing of it. He prayed, began his fast, did his interview, and didn't eat until the next day. I see fasting as a corollary or appendage of the law of sacrifice. The Lord understands what I am sacrificing when I fast. I believe if one is unable to fast for longer than a few hours, then finding another appropriate sacrifice will still bring blessings. The blessings one person gets from fasting can be received by another person by obedience to a different law.
  2. Seeing that he was going through a disciplinary council, he was most likely somewhere on the road of repentance. A person does not have to go through that council if he does not want to.
  3. When I think I'm clear in my communication about the chores my kids need to do, and 2 minutes later they are playing outside, or reading books. They were underly compelled.
  4. From what I understand, the only exception is sealings. You can do sealings as a vicarious spouse before you've done that yourself.
  5. This sounds like serious depression. I've been there. It is rough, but treatable. I suggest seeing that he sees either your family doctor or a psychiatrist to take a questionnaire or two and get a diagnosis and help. I wish you, your son, and your family the best.
  6. https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/bofm/alma/8.10?lang=eng#p10 10 Nevertheless Alma alabored much in the spirit, bwrestling with God in cmighty prayer, that he would pour out his Spirit upon the people who were in the city; that he would also grant that he might baptize them unto repentance. I used to think Alma wrestled against God (spiritually) in opposition. It wasn't until years after my mission I thought of the other way "with" could be interpreted. That Alma was accompanied by God in his wrestle.
  7. You had brought up the point of parent involvement. @Manners Matter was giving suggestions on how to proceed with that idea. It's too late (or too early ) now to do it in October.
  8. Alarms go off and then you turn them off. I've always found that awkward.
  9. I think you meant MOO!!! MOOO!
  10. Maybe the reason was to prompt you to post your question here and to get one or more forum members to think and reflect about miracles in their life... Thank you.
  11. I don't recall anything like that in my life. Without more details (and I can understand that you don't want to share much of such an experience), it's hard to think of a reason. The one thought I have is, if there was another person involved, or witnessed it, that it was for that person and not for you?
  12. Any fantasy geeks here? This topic reminds me of Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archive series. There's a group of "magic users" (using the term loosely). They have to say a series of oaths to gain access to more power/abilities. Each order has a different set of oaths, except they all have the first one. https://coppermind.net/wiki/Immortal_Words
  13. I had always been prejudiced against them simply because of the name "Essential." There's nothing essential (meaning necessary) about them. Then someone explained that the adjective is used because the oils are made of the 'essence' of the different plants. I guess that makes sense, but I still think the name is misleading.
  14. If I was on death row and had to pick my last meal, it would be Thanksgiving dinner. Turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, all drowning in gravy, with green bean casserole and strawberry jello with a pretzel crust. Apple or cherry pie for dessert.
  15. From what I understand, a person or family does not HAVE to attend the ward that they are geographically assigned to. Anyone is welcome to attend any ward or building they'd like. The leaders will probably strongly encourage you to attend the 'proper' ward. But I don't think many bishops will tell a person to stop coming because they don't live in the boundaries. I've witnessed the exact opposite on multiple occasions. I've even seen some families get their records moved to ward they don't live in. It's not usual, but it's an option. The town I live in has 16k people and 4 wards. A couple years ago, the boundaries were realigned. We kept the same number of wards. I've talked with some people who have been involved. They (the ones I talked to, not saying it's universal) looked at city and school boundaries, natural (mountains, valleys, etc) areas, number of children, number of tithe payers, Melchizedek priesthood holders, families that hold FHE, future development sites, and more.
  16. I've noticed in the Vegas area that the wards in the older parts of town are shrinking as the suburbs keep growing. I think that could be happening in other areas too. My brother has to drive 20-25 minutes to his building, when there are two others closer because otherwise, there aren't enough members near his building to fill it.
  17. That is such a Capricorn thought process....(Or some other sign, I don't know)
  18. I've seen and heard of a lot of scenarios. Moving 4 households from one stake to another is a new one to me. I can imagine some people feeling upset, singled out or picked on. Personally I'd probably have a moment or two of mourning and then mild anticipation of the new ward. My kids would be the most upset. Leaving established friendships for the unknown can be scary for children. Your leaders are probably thrilled, not disappointed, with your response. They were just caught off-guard. They were expecting to put out another fire. 🔥🚒
  19. As I was thinking more about this, I recalled a conference talk, linked below, called "But If Not..." Elder Dennis E Simmons talked about Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego. They had faith that God was able to save them. But they also had faith that if He didn't, that they were still doing what they were supposed to. I think this sign might be better like https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/general-conference/2004/04/but-if-not?lang=eng
  20. I was excommunicated in March. My name is no longer on the records of the church. But I am working to bring forth the fruit of my repentance and be baptized again. I am praying and studying the gospel more now than I ever have in my life, except maybe on my mission. If asked, I would still identify as a member because I still attend and hold the same beliefs, doctrines, and practices.
  21. I'm a little confused after reading your post and then the article. From what I understand in the article, the achievement of using solar power to get temperatures of 1,000 degrees Celsius is new. Using solar power in making cement, steel, and glass is new. Is that not the case?
  22. Regardless of the reasons for the disparity in the past, now that the Church is leaving BSA, I'm glad to see they are equalizing the budget. https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/general-conference/2019/10/25cook?lang=eng
  23. Dang it. I wanted to look up the camps, I've been on the site before. But it doesn't look like my account has access to it anymore, since I was ex'ed. There is a property the Church owns in Southern Nevada called Warm Springs. It used to be owned by Howard Hughes (I almost wrote Hugh Hefner.......oops). It's open for reservation from any member, but there are costs. I think $250/night for half the location. It has two naturally warm pools and two fields for camping. I'm just curious for my own edification about how many locations are camps and exclusive to YW.
