  1. Long before we met (and long before becoming LDS) my DW entered a jalapeno eating contest at a bar and ate 64 of them in a short period of time - 5 minutes I think. Since then she has suffered stomach and esophagus issues -- been 30 years now. - but hey she did win the contest. I hate to think of how much we and our insurance have paid because of that contest.
  2. as a (thankfully now former) Ward Exec Secretary you'd probably be surprised how many people turn down the opportunity to give a talk. Fully 1/3 of the people in my Ward turned down speaking assignments for one reason or another. I wouldn't have thought it was that high until I was called to the position to assign talks,
  3. And I would submit that its attitudes like the above that drive many people away from Church and if that is the case, the bearer of such attitudes will need to answer to God for that if they chased someone away. I think we all need to watch better what we say and how we say it. We all have our personal sins we are loath to give up. You may be perfect at tithing, but since you have not yet been translated I guarantee there's some sin(s) you are guilty of. This applies to all of us - lets not be so quick to cast the first stone, Christ ate with and taught sinners, he didn't go only to the perfected.
  4. Sorry PC - but I have to disagree. One purpose of us being here is to learn to choose Good over evil, right over wrong, because its the right thing to do, not because we fear punishment. for someone who only avoids sin because of the punishment factor, if the fear of punishment goes away, then so does the change in behavior. There has to be a change in heart. The fear of the death penalty in TX does not prevent me from murdering people - the knowledge that its wrong to do so and the fact that I (try to) love my fellow human beings is what stops me.
  5. I tend to agree with that statement. I personally believe that sexuality is a line with x percent of people at one end of the line being homosexual and x percent of people at the other end of the line are heterosexual and everyone else lies somewhere in between, the x percent at either end has no choice, the ones in between do to one extent or another. We LDS do no fear God, we believe He is a loving Father in Heaven that wants all of us to return to him. We also do not believe in the same kind of Hell that other religions teach.
  6. It means you now have all the rights and privileges that come with the promotion to Senior Member. namely the right and privilege of having 'Senior Member' listed proudly under your screen name -- welcome to the club!
  7. Sorry but I consider it incorrect teaching. It is your personal opinion, so it has value to you, but to teach it as fact, well, that's wrong IMHO.
  8. Well that throws out about 30%+ people that show up every Sunday. note - I disagree with the above statement. You actually think withdrawing physically is preferable? I certainly hope you are NEVER in a position of authority. You can't teach them if they are not there. The Church is not a resting place for the perfect, its an aid station for the ill.
  9. How accurate is scripture? As a history text, a little bit. As a science manual - a very very little. As a spiritual guide to living - pretty good. Personally, I prefer studying conference talks, I get spiritually fed by those, but then I have already read the scriptures many times, however it is true you see something different every time you read them.
  10. Ate at 'In and Out' for the first time last Saturday -- I was not impressed.
  11. At 21 you are an adult. Ahh Youth........ I mean no offense to you at all, but I wonder if you are really ready to marry if you can not even tell your parents. I think some serious thinking and decision making is in order. Good luck to all involved.
  12. There are pterodactyls on the wall of the creation room of either Manti or SLC Temples (been a while since I've been out west I don't remember which of those 2 it is)
  13. I do believe in global climate change and I do believe that dumping billions of tons of garbage into the atmosphere MAY be slightly speeding up what nature was already doing.
  14. You need to talk with the EQP and then the Bishop if necessary. As far as using your truck, no, they must use a moving truck that they arrange in advance, As far as moving non-members or friends of members - no All moves must be arranged at least 2 weeks in advance - that's how it should be. Talk to your missionaries and tell then that your truck is off limits, period. Learn how to say no when someone asks for the use of your truck.
  15. Even though we have no kids and both of us work, our guiding rule as far as all bills (including the house) is that one persons salary has to cover all bills with money left over. That insures not only a modest house but modest cars too - and a savings account and retirement plans and food storage.
  16. And I see the other party as lying to their base, saying one thing to get elected and never doing anything about the issues they campaigned on when they are in power or in fact doing just the opposite.I'm fed up with both major parties, unfortunately both parties base see's their parties as saviors of the world and the other party as Satan personified. So we are stuck voting for the lesser of two evils or for a 3rd party candidate that hasn't got a chance of being elected. Quite frankly if there were a new frontier to take off for, I'd have my bags packed. The problem is there are no new frontiers anymore.
  17. Count me in with the unreasonable and unintelligent - cause it sure appeared you got a bit hot under the collar
  18. Anatess You remind me of the young idealist Perchik in Fiddler on the Roof seeing everything as political: Sadly for both you and Perchik, everything is not political.
  19. Skalenfehl if we really wanted to protect the Constitution then we should dump both major parties as their actions speak much louder than their words on the subject.
  20. I thought my first one was a bit rough, deleted it, then went back and changed it. My posts are never final for an hour or so. I do agree with you that the internet writer can not define it for someone else, however if he wants to do it that way its his and Gods business. You do seem out of sorts though.
  21. define "annual increase" -- show your proofs. If it works for him and he believes its an honest tithe - then it is, and neither you nor anyone else is authorized to tell him he is wrong.Take a breath Vort, you seem to be a bit uptight lately -- anything we can do to assist?
  22. We were able to have that lesson without any talk of current events. I still maintain that all politics should be off limits. Heck I even hate singing patriotic hymns in Church because that's just not the place for it and during them will sit there with my mouth shut.
  23. Your Dad should have his license taken away, as should anyone texting while they are driving.
  24. I hate texting, I have it blocked on all of our phones. If you can't pick up the phone and call me then you must not really want anything that I care about. You want to email me, that's ok, but I may not check it but every other day or so.
  25. We're there for the Gospel, not the politics. Why would you think you should discuss political science or anything at all to do with politics? If I wanted politics in any form I'd listen to talk radio instead of going to Church. Unless you're discussing the Kings/judges arguments from Mosiah PLEASE Keep ANY discussion of politics in any form out of Church
