  1. Wow, kids/teens can be soo thoughtless..I've been there myself, made crass statements without thinking them thru, nothing on this scale, but still, kids do it.. This reminds me of an episode of Airline where a woman passenger who was not getting her own way at one of the check in sites suddenly said she had a bomb in her luggage and was refused flight that day..obviously a very, very stupid thing for her to have said..she wasn't imprisoned for it tho..
  2. I did hear this direct from the mother, that a church court was to be held because the sin was sexual.
  3. I've heard that there is a 15 year old girl, in the LDS church, who has fallen pregnant. She has been persuaded to go ahead with the pregnancy, however her parents have been advised that she will be subject to a church court. Adoption has been mentioned for when the child is born, however the girl's mother has stated that she doesn't have a testimony of that being the best thing for the child. My question is, is it right that a teenager in this position should be subject to a church court? Does not the stress of having to attend this place the mother to be and her pregnancy in danger..too much stress leading to miscarriage perhaps? (Obviously I'm talking about a severe amount of stress, and know that it isn't 'that' easy to have a miscarriage normally). I've heard that the reason for the church court is because the sin is sexual by nature, and therefore cannot be dealt with by just direct repentance/prayer to God by the mother to be. Why is this? Surely there is no greater repentance procedure/conversation with God than a person praying for forgiveness rather than having to go via the church Hierarchy? I feel very sorry for this girl, I know that in the eyes of the church she has sinned, however I see her as being particularly vunerable in her condition, and so cannot see a church court having a beneficial effect on her. Also, the possibility of the girl being co-erced into having her baby adopted, 'for its own good', seems just too much intrusion by the church into this girl's life now and future... I was a member of the Roman Catholic Church, and recall the special centres that some pregnant RC girls were sent to, and where lots had their children adopted under these circumstances, but this was many years ago..30 or more generally...surely God is merciful and would want us to be so too..if anything, I feel that the church should be offering counselling for the girl at this time, if she requests it, rather than punishing her. Sorry if this doesn't sound uplifting, but this really 'gets' to me...
  4. Scott, are you still an atheist? I'm just asking that because I'm surprised to hear you're attending the LDS church, unless you've had a change of heart and wish to be an LDS, or just prefer LDS women because you feel they have higher standards/morals than non LDS.. I'm not saying that is what you're thinking, just wondering..
  5. I've always tried to trust my kids, especially when they reached their teens, however sometimes I just get that silly head on where I'm worrying about their every move outside the house without me. My ex, their dad, is even worse than I am..I have had to keep secret the fact that my kids have travelled across the country to odd events, to stop him from worrying unnecessarily..trouble is, when I do that I start to worry excessively about the trouble I'll be in if the kids come to any harm, lol!! My daughter is 20 on Monday, I'm usually very good with her, however she has been ill recently, depression, which has made her feel more dependent on me and her dad in all sorts of ways..she wants to return to college, and I couldn't help suggesting that I go with her to chat to student services about her options, financially etc. she had to remind me that she is more than capable of doing this by herself. My son turned 16 last month and met a girl on holiday, she lives about 2 hours away from us, maybe a little further, by bus, and he wanted to go to meet her in Manchester city centre for the afternoon, I let him go but trailed him by text messages all the way..he was a little annoyed at me doing this as recently he'd commented about how pleased he was that I wasn't the kind of mum who texted her kids all night to check where they were, and here I was doing just that!! He was fine, btw :)

  7. We had fun times trying to guess the first names of a couple of missionaries last year..we guessed correctly, eventually. I wonder what would happen if the woman being taught by 2 Missionaries with a 3rd PH in attendance decided to accuse all three of assaulting her? Surely it would make sense to have an additional female there too? Conversly, it would be easy for the males in tha situation to take advantage of the woman, so still seems a little off to have to have this rule.
  8. Hi Debs, I'm single and from the UK too. It's a shame you're made to feel the way you do within your ward. I was about to say that us singles are treated better in the ward I belong to, then I remembered that the person who took me back to church this time around, after a 20+ gap in attending, was a friend of mine from years ago when we were both 1st time mums, so it was easier for others within the ward to befriend me because of the ties I already had to the ward..also some people were still attending from when I last attended. However, there are still couples in the ward whom I've never spoken to, can hardly picture who they are when somebody mentions their names to me, and presumably this is because I'm single and therefore don't automatically become a 'couples' friend.. I have been luckier on the help front, however. When I was investigating the church, just over a year ago, the Missionaries always asked if there were any jobs they could do for me, so they did one or two DIY jobs occasionally, and the gardening..I have been lucky to have regular VT, but not HTs, and they VTs have also asked if there is anything that other members could do to help me out, such as asking the male youth if they could come out in the spring/summer time to help with the garden etc. I haven't helped others out practically, as I'm not very skilled, but have been able to help some members with their family history, which I've been informed is enough for me to feel that I have repaid the help I'm receiving. I liked the suggestion that you start to invite members to your home for various events, recently the women in our ward, married and single, have started a bookclub which is meeting in 1 member's house for the time being, with the wish that eventually it will rotate to meet at other members' houses too..perhaps something like this could help you to mix more with all kinds of people in the ward, good luck!
  9. I'm not certain whether the item you want to link to is a video or just song lyrics..if it's song lyrics then the best source to copy/paste from would just be a Lyrics website which lists lyrics of songs by a particular artist, and which doesn't additionally have comments from people regarding those lyrics etc.
  10. My daughter was born with 1 leg shorter than the other..eventually reaching a difference of 5cm, so she had an operation to fix it. Now she also has 1 foot a full size or more less than the other. Certain stores will order 2 separate sizes, but may charge extra for this..otherwise, if the shoes are cheap enough, you could buy 2 pairs of each...
  11. I had my 2nd child when my eldest was just short of 4 years old, throughout the pregnancy she was asking those sorts of questions, I think I told her about the 'special cuddle' that parents do to make children.. I was more embarrassed about her insistence on knowing how the child was born, then demonstrating at nursery school!!! LOL :)
  12. I haven't been to church for a few weeks, so haven't heard whether this has been extended to my ward too, can you tell me more about it Willow? Where the new SA Ward is for instance? I agree completely with your reservations about sending the YSA to that ward if it's so far away, I think there's only currently 2 YSA in our Ward, and they are reliant on their parents for transport to/from church too, at the moment..very disruptive idea.. I meant to add, do you know if the new SA Ward is to serve all of the YSA in our Stake?
  13. I watched the 3rd series complete this week, I found the whole Temple scene a bit of an anti-climax after all the hype on the boards about it. The scenes only lasted around 2 minutes or so in total..
  14. I attended 2 meetings as a support companion to others in my ward. The manual is useful for anybody who believes in a 'higher being' such as God or Allah etc. and who is willing to have faith that they will help with the problems being experienced.
  15. Amazing! The only 'colour' B/W pictures I've seen at home before, are the B/W photos taken of my dad in India, over which somebody has painted green for his uniform and pink for skintones! :)
  16. I just wanted to jump back into this thread, having skimmed thru a list of articles from Sunstone in late 2006/early 2007, and having read radomly selected ones. I read tonight: The Borderlander's Gift : https://www.sunstonemagazine.com/pdf/144-70-71.pdf I've only been a member of the church 13 months, and admit that I'm still trying to build my testimony of some of the doctrines etc. I found the suggestion of a response to a question during the temple recommend interview, in Jared's story, particulary comforting: 'So we went to our bishop for recommends, where, of course, I had to face the questions: “Do you believe. . . ? Do you accept. . . ? Do you have a testimony of. . . ? You wrote that one approach was to level with the bishop, to say essentially: I do not want to be duplicitous about any of this, but I really do not know anything for sure. But I am a loyal and dedicated member of this church. I want to work for it and serve others, and I do believe the basic tenets are true at one level or another. I choose to have faith. I choose to believe, or at least not disbelieve. There are many things I do not “know,” but I am willing to suspend disbelief and accept them on faith. I tried that approach on our bishop, ending with, “That is what I mean when I reply in the affirmative about those questions.” And he said, “That is totally acceptable.” 'What I found comforting about it was that you don't have to pretend to have a perfectly formed testimony of the church in order to partake in its work, callings etc. as long as you are honest in your response to the Bishop's questions, and as long as you do have a little faith that the subject matter being referred to may be true, and that you're willing to live your life as if it is true. I just wanted to link to that article as an example, in my opinion, that Sunstone isn't necessarily trying to lead church members into apostacy.

    Vestiges

Does anybody here keep those items that they no longer use, such as tea and coffee, to give to visiting relatives/friends who do drink them? I'm asking this partly because of a comment I heard about somebody having had help from church welfare with their shopping, and then when the till receipt was checked it was discovered that they had bought...shock of all shocks!! tea and coffee amongst their other items... Are we really to be that picky when we know we are likely to have visitors who drink tea and coffee?
  18. I read both articles referred to in this thread and enjoyed them both, the one about marriage and the one Snow posted a link to: https://www.sunstonemagazine.com/pdf/066-36-38.pdf I didn't find anything particularly derogatory towards the church, just suggestions of additional things that a person could do/learn about in order to get a more fulfilling experience.
  19. Last year I attended a Saturday evening session in April and a Sunday morning session in October..I have a problem with dropping off to sleep nowadays, especially while sitting in a large room full of people listening to speeches, so I would probably benefit from reading the talks online when they are published, I have no sound on my PC at the moment so couldn't watch them..
  20. This may not help you much, but is an overview of the organisation and its magazine: Sunstone Magazine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
  21. 86 years for me, not bad taking into consideration my hi BP and Cholestrol, Diabetes and Heart conditions..If I lost weight I would definitely increase my years..
  22. One of the problems that I've encountered with Missionaries, is that they seem to assume that nobody except members of the LDS church have any knowledge of the Bible or New Testament..this sometimes comes across as being very arrogant, or investigators feel as if they're being treated like children..Perhaps some training on 'people skills' and a little less naivety would make Missions more successful generally? Also, when a new member has been baptised they find that the Missionaries quite quickly withdraw from visiting them, initially, or reduce the number of visits they make drastically, some new members have felt very lost at this point, especially if current church members have not tried to help fellowship them in the company of the Missionaries and without the Missionaries being present..
  23. Wow! Doc T. you've been a great support and confidante for me on this site, I love your posts and opinions, look forward to seeing you back on the site one day...you'll fall back in the No. Of Posts race you know! Please pass my best wishes to your wife and family :)
  24. I think MOE has hit the nail on the head, you need to view this more from your girlfriend's pov, and help her in her efforts to repent and overcome her guilt. As for the 'one night stand', you wrote: 'Finally, she told me that in the short period between when she broke up with her ex and meeting me, an overly pushy (ex)friend took advantage of her emotional state. When I was trying to probe just how pushy, she answered, "I wasn't raped. This would be a whole lot easier if I was."' Your girlfriend mentioned that her ex friend took advantage of her at an emotional time, I would not view this the same as any old one night stand at all..she was vunerable and she was used and abused by her so-called friend..she shouldn't feel guilt over this, she just needs your reassurance that she is still loved by you, and that you won't take advantage of her as others have..
