Here in Colorado, our horses respectfully disagree with Phil. They're losing their winter coats, basically predicting that winter is over. I have no idea if they're good at prediction or not, so we'll have to see.

In 2001 apparently. From wikipedia: He's also defended India's nuclear testing. (I only see this from his detractors, not sure how he phrased it himself.)LM -
Things we don't do any more because of the bad economy
NeuroTypical replied to RainofGold's topic in General Discussion
I got a 10% pay cut this year, but I've still got a job. We cut stopped all discretionary spending on our horses this year, except for a new wheelbarrow. Much less eating out. Much less fun $$ for outings and whatnot. We've slowed the rate at which we're paying ourselves back for last year's car purchase. We got the car because it got 32 mpg, and we parked the truck which got 12. I've had to slow my 401K contributions, which kills me because now is the time to invest in the market. LM -
Our taxes used to be complicated, so I went to a human H&R person. That turned out to be a good thing, as we had a bunch of restating that happened 3 and 4 years ago, and H&R ate all the fees and penalties. The last few years, our taxes are much less complicated, so I just sit down and do it with TaxCut software. H&R has sent it to me free the last two years - I'm not sure why. We itemize the heck out of everything. LM

You automatically go to hell for not being able to keep a single commandment? Oh crap. Guess I'll be joining ya. Maybe you could flameproof a few books first, so we can have something to read?

I've owned full-size and baby Glock 9mm's. I have almost no experience with any other kind of handgun, so I can't go recommending against anything, but I must say that I am very very satisfied with my Glock. So, you say Buddhists "don't believe in violence"? I think I understand that you all figure killing for any reason, no matter how justifiable, ain't a tool a Buddhist can use. But are you able to practice self-defense in ways which might harm someone? Something to keep in mind is the notion that when we employ a firearm to defend ourselves, we are trying to STOP the attack. We are not trying to KILL the attacker. It's an important difference. And FYI, there are tons and tons of people who survive being shot by a 9mm. LM -
Board rule #2 (Please be respectful and courteous to all) #3 (Personal attacks, name calling, flaming, and judgments against other members will not be tolerated.) and #4 (No bickering and nit-picking toward others.)YL, could you maybe tone down the personal stuff a bit? LM

No, I'm saying God said it. You saying He didn't? Why the leap to associate this commandment with solutions to world's problems? Why would you think God's commandment to multiply was intended to do anything but keep the race of man, with all of it's trials and tribulations, going? To provide earthly tabernacles for His spirit kids, so they could learn and grow (yes, and die)? It's between them and God. Of course I can't deny their claims. I can pretty much take a stand on people turning their backs on God's commandments because (in your words) "some people are just happy as can be without children." My stand: Following God's commandments is a better plan than rejecting them, no matter how happy you happen to be with your life right now. You seem to have made me the 'have kids now' spokesman against my will. All I did was quote the proclomation to the family, and flick a boogie at the "I'm too happy to have kids" crowd. I could care less how people chose to follow this commandment - it ain't in my stewardship to tell 'em anything one way or the other. My wife and I multiplied by one (two kids), and we're done. LM

From The Family: A Proclamation to the World So yeah, God has commanded his children to multiply. He didn't say "unless you're content without 'em". It's a "keep the commandments" thing. Not a 'progress to Godhood' thing, or a 'pass judgement' thing. LM

...and he inviteth them all to come unto him and partake of his goodness; and he denieth none that come unto him, black and white, bond and free, male and female; and he remembereth the heathen; and all are alike unto God, both Jew and Gentile. Howdy The_Branch, Me either. We believe the Holy Ghost has been here doing his thing the whole time. We DO believe that Christ's church - the one He set up with authority - the one obviously meant to continue on earth since the Bible records replacing apostles - that church ceased to exist. And the earth was left with a bunch of people doing the best they could, with what spirit they could obtain, but without authority. Because his sucessors were all martyred in various awful ways, and for a period of time there was only the local leadership. You know - the same local leadership that kept screwing up and introducing falsehood, prompting letters from the Apostles. Folks turned many of those letters into canonized scripture. Then, after a time, some Roman Emperor just up and decides he'll grab the reigns of the church. And over the centuries, all those councils needing to be called, people voting on God's will (and the nature of God for that matter). All those splits and factions and sects. Does this look like God's hand at work preserving the line of succession and authority? If this doesn't answer your question, I don't know what will... Anyway, welcome! LM

The importance of this topic breeds strong opinions. Therefore, I can respect the passion behind yours.May I suggest a book to you (and anyone else reading this thread, for that matter)? And They Were Not Ashamed: Strengthening Marriage Through Sexual Fulfillment It's basically the closest thing our church has to a "how to do it" book, but it also takes an in depth look into how both male and female brains work. It talks about how the average male is incredibly responsive to visual stimulation. It ain't a guy's fault, we're built that way. It isn't a woman's fault either, but it is partially her problem. This book might help you view the male sexual responses with a bit more understanding and respect, and it might help you teach realities to your girls without instilling fear in them. LM -

Cool beans. I asked because I do know that families where both parents work, can make it so the kid always has a parent around, but I just have no personal experience with seeing it work myself. -
Networking is basically contacting everybody you know and asking them about jobs. I've heard estimates from 60-85% of new jobs are obtained this way. It's a very well researched phenomenon out there, but we LDS know it involves basic gospel principles of service and love which most good people have in abundance. Folks want to help each other out. You: Hi Bob, it's me AngelLynn. I remember you saying once that you worked for [company x]. I'm looking for work - do you know of anything? Bob: Hi AL! I didn't know you were looking. We don't have anything here, but my cousin Bertha is in management at [company y], and she told me the other day they had a few entry level openings. Good starting pay and great benefits too - let me give you his number. You: Hi Bertha, you don't know me, but I'm friends with your cousin Bob. I'm seeking employment, and Bob told me you might be the person to talk to. [etc] --- Hope this helps. LM

Not sure if you considered me one of the harsh ones or not, but if you did, please consider that "harsh" doesn't necessarily equal "not helpful" or "untrue". God bless, and best of luck. LM

"Immodest" Dance Outfits: Much Ado About Nothing?
NeuroTypical replied to Janice's topic in Parenting
I had a small family blog that used to track the weekly number of hits. I'd make my little posts with mainly pictures and a few short obscure words describing them. I'd get maybe a dozen hits in a week. Then one post, the hit count jumped to a few hundred in a week. The only difference was that I had included the phrase "little children" in the post, instead of my usual "bunlings" or "wee kidlets". Translation: There are people out there who are searching the net for pictures of "little children". Conclusion: A segment of those people are searching for sexual titilation. I'm wondering, is there more than one aspect of immodesty? We're making big points about how it's a state of the heart and attitude and whatnot, but does not immodesty have a component that exists in the eye of the beholder? Learning what I've learned about child sex offenders, I would absolutely consider my kids immodest for running around the back yard with no clothes on. Not just immodest, but also very dangerous. Back in 1973, when I was ignorant of such people, I thought no such thing upon discovering an innocent giggly neighbor kid streaking down the street away from her mom. LM -

People don't get jobs by applying for them online. People get jobs by networking. You oughta look into it.

Question: Does anyone else out there teach their kids that immodesty is acceptable with their spouses? LM
