Prodigal_Son Posted September 14, 2008 Report Posted September 14, 2008 I just KNEW you'd read this thread with a subject like that! I know this will sound silly, but have any of you ever wondered why our bodies were designed the way they were? Why, for example, we have to eat so much? Why weren't we given lower metabolisms that would allow for eating one meal per day, etc? And for that matter, why do we have gas? I mean, is passing gas truly universally amusing - even celestial comedy? Feel free to share... Quote
skalenfehl Posted September 14, 2008 Report Posted September 14, 2008 I suppose it's just the way a high tech, finely tuned machine needs to operate the most efficiently. Quote

Guest tomk Posted September 14, 2008 Report Posted September 14, 2008 The union of body and soul, for us, is recent, and not without novelty! This is our introduction to the kind of existence Father in Heaven enjoys. We looked upon Him in pre-existent realms and desired to have that glory. We wanted to be like our Father....to have bodies! I have also speculated that our need to pass gas perhaps was divinely inspired. So we don't take ourselves TOO seriously. :) Quote
WANDERER Posted September 14, 2008 Report Posted September 14, 2008 When I look at the complexity of DNA and all of creation I'm truly awed. I'm just grateful He did such a good job...things could be way more dire than a bit of flatulence...hands up if you wanted to be more like mould instead...no complaints from this little duck. Quote
MarginOfError Posted September 14, 2008 Report Posted September 14, 2008 I'd be more impressed if we never experienced gas. The digestive process is one where complex compounds are broken down into simpler nutrients that the body can process. The chemical reactions involved are bound to create byproducts. Much like a log decaying in the forest--the organisms that decay the log release various gases and byproducts that actually help keep the environment stable. Same principle with digestion. The only way we could escape gas would be if our bodies were so perfect that they could use every conceivable byproduct produced by digestion. If we were such perfect animals, however, we'd never experience discomfort from eating, and we'd find too much joy in eating with not enough pain. Then there'd be no opposition in all things, and the whole Plan of Happiness would crumble, all because beans didn't make you toot anymore. And even worse...whoopie cushions wouldn't be funny anymore. Quote

I blame my Parents for it....they started feeding me 3 times a day when I was younger....and because of that I grew up expecting that the rest of my life......advise: Don't start feeding your kids 3 times a day or they too will grow up expecting it the rest of their lives.:D:D Quote
Honor Posted September 14, 2008 Report Posted September 14, 2008 I'm willing to bet that just about every woman out there has asked "Is this REALLY necessary?!" more than once in their lifetime - I know I have. The answer to that questions was actually one of the greatest tools I used to relax and make it through childbirth. I knew that what my body was doing and the work I had to go through was required to get my baby born and it helped me to be able to relax and submit myself to the process. Just like Moe was saying - there IS a reason for everything and however unpleasant, our Creator knew what He was doing. That said, I'm still wondering about the necessity of leg hair. I'm sure you guys are fine with it (maybe you ask the same about facial hair?), but I'm tired of shaving only to have it grow right back. If I wasn't addicted to my smooth legs, arms and arm pits, I'd give it up altogether. Nope - just can't...put...the...razor...down! Quote
Prodigal_Son Posted September 14, 2008 Author Report Posted September 14, 2008 Wait a sec... you guys talk about gas like it's a BAD thing! Haha. With my wife's first pregnancy, things got out of control. We actually created a"fart chart". And she blew me away (pun intended). Quote
debi56 Posted September 14, 2008 Report Posted September 14, 2008 I think that if it weren't for bodily functions, balding heads, needing dentures, arthritis, depends, children, cellulite, etc. We might not look forward to returning to our heavenly home. I keep thinking I look toward the day when I won't have any of that to deal with. No bloating, full head of hair, teeth, being able to walk without hurting, perfect eyesight, perfect hearing, no wearing a pillow for incontinence, noisy and bratty kids, and that all over orange peel look. Can you think of any other incentive to look toward eternity. Quote
Nibowaka Posted September 14, 2008 Report Posted September 14, 2008 My question on this issue has been: If we resurrect with our bodies, what purpose will some of our anatomy serve in the Kingdoms? Will we need a digestive system? Yes, Jesus reportedly ate fish to show His apostles that he did have a body, but will we need to eat? And what the end functions? Will we need to excrete? Gas? Will our noses still create mucos? Will our other organs be needed? Will kidneys still have to process waste? To what purpose will our bodies serve us as perfected beings? Quote
Moksha Posted September 14, 2008 Report Posted September 14, 2008 To believe is good, but to believe and flatulate is divine. Quote

Gen. 3: 16 16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee. Moses 4: 22 22 Unto the woman, I, the Lord God, said: I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception. In sorrow thou shalt bring forth children, and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee. Do children mean more to their mothers because they go through so much pain to bring them into the world?and he shall rule over thee. --- I might add that the husband needs to be consulting with the Savior. Women support their husbands in their righteous leadership of the family...not when they exercise unrighteous dominion. Quote
WANDERER Posted September 15, 2008 Report Posted September 15, 2008 (edited) Perhaps it's a specific statement to Eve. I have to admit I'm a little confused: original sin/curse of Eve...does it fit into LDS beliefs? Or does it slot into experiencing life and learning what a spiritual body could not tell us...is that a multiplication of sorrow? Should it be? And how does sorrow link up to the decision to have a family and get married? The ruling over seems a specific pointer...did God decide on that plan? And is this the way it will be in celestial heaven? Why is there no sorrow in heaven if this is the case? I wonder if the sorrowing is over agency...not agency itself...but seeing the consequences and wanting to protect loved ones from them..: both children and partner... THinking aloud and trying to parse into an LDS framework...but of course....I'm not LDS. Edited September 15, 2008 by WANDERER Quote

richlittell Posted September 15, 2008 Report Posted September 15, 2008 I suggest we move this post to the General Discussion forum. anyone second that? BTW, maybe we should start an LDS humor forum lol. Quote

I am not convinced that being resurrected with hair would be an advantage - I have other things to do in eternity other than to worry about taking care of hair. The Traveler (looks like a slender Mr. Clean minus the ear ring) Quote

Last night at a family dinner my daughter "tooted" and then immediately blamed it on me. Smart for a 9 year old.O43 Quote
Prodigal_Son Posted September 15, 2008 Author Report Posted September 15, 2008 The Traveler (looks like a slender Mr. Clean minus the ear ring)We're twins! Only I'm too young to be bald! I'd take mine back in a NY minute. I had low maintenance hair and miss it. I actually dream of regaining all my hair back at least once or twice a month! Quote
richlittell Posted September 16, 2008 Report Posted September 16, 2008 I don't know, is it just me or is anyone else bothered by the fact that we have a big bold Bodily Functions!!! as a topic under "LDS Gospel Discussion"I second my own motion to have someone please move this to general discussion or somewhere else. :) Quote
