Wingnut Posted January 19, 2010 Report Posted January 19, 2010 Oh, I can't even begin to describe the brilliance. You'll have to listen to it later, but in a gist: He's at a dinner party, and there's a "Me Monster" -- one of those people who (1) only talks about themselves, and (2) always has a story to top your story. So he has a "social fantasy" and that is to be one of the 12 men in the world who have walked on the moon, so that he can just sit back at dinner parties, listen to the Me Monster go on and on and on, and then simply interject, "I walked on the moon." LOL It is fun noticing the difference in spelling between Australia & America and I enjoyed reading how pam and johndoe picked up on the U difference in my post with favourite instead of favorite and colour instead of color Here's some (? useless) trivia for you on the history of spelling where Americans, for example dropped the U from much of the English language. The two varieties of English are in fact one and the same language with some interesting, sometimes amusing, sometimes challenging differences. Although the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand have English as an official language, the United States does not have an official language.Webster's 1828 dictionary featured only -or and is generally given much of the credit for the adoption of this form in the United States. By contrast, Dr Johnson's 1755 dictionary used the -our spelling for all words still so spelled in Britain, where the u has since been dropped.H L Mencken makes the point that, "honor appears in the Declaration of Independence, but it seems to have got there rather by accident than by design. In Jefferson’s original draft it is spelled honour."While Noah Webster, just a few years after producing his famous Dictionary of the English Language, would produce his own modern translation of the English Bible in 1833; the public remained too loyal to the King James Version for Webster’s version to have much impact. Moksha Posted January 21, 2010 Report Posted January 21, 2010 Okay, I'm either hallucinating (which has happened), or I'm still hallucinating, because I remember I asked you about the book "Shadow and Claw," because I thought I remembered you writing that you had read it with a dictionary by your side. But when I asked you, you said it wasn't you. So, was it some other Moksha I asked or am I hallucinating? And if you read it after that, how the #%$#$% did you get through it? Because I'm not stupid, and I have tried to read that book three times now and can't get through it.By the way, I read somewhere recently where Wolfe is considered the best SciFi author of all time. Elph Elphaba, I have read the Urth of the New Sun books a couple of times, and I did have to use a dictionary because Wolfe used words I didn't even know existed. I suspect the followup question may have been fielded by the Moksha of Earth#2, who looks much the same (well, maybe a bit better looking and smarter as well). I have read a number of Wolfe's books. I think of Wolfe as one of the best authors ever.Wallace Stegner sounds like a fascinating writer too. So many awards! Quite the Utah connection too: One commenter to The Times, Stephen Trimble, a 2008–2009 Wallace Stegner Fellow at the University of Utah's Tanner Humanities Center, drew attention to the broader Utah birthday tribute to Stegner through leading conversations about Stegner’s work in communities across Utah. Gov. Jon Huntsman's declaration of February 18, 2009 as Wallace Stegner Day highlighted Stegner as "one of Utah's most prominent citizens...a legendary voice for Utah and the West as an author, educator, and conservationist...[who was] raised and educated in Salt Lake City and [at] the University of Utah, [and] possess[ed] a lifelong love of Utah’s landscapes, people, and culture."Stegner was born in Lake Mills, Iowa and grew up in Great Falls, Montana, Salt Lake City, Utah and southern Saskatchewan, which he wrote about in his autobiography Wolf Willow. Stegner says he "lived in twenty places in eight states and Canada". While living in Utah, he joined a Boy Scout troop at a Mormon church (although he himself was a Presbyterian) and earned the Eagle Scout award. He received a B.A. at the University of Utah in 1930. Stegner books whose titles certainly stand out:Mormon Country The Gathering of Zion: The Story of the Mormon Trail The Preacher And the Slave aka Joe Hill: A Biographical Novel* Thanks to Wikipedia for the above material Quote
