Dravin Posted November 13, 2010 Report Posted November 13, 2010 ksl.com - Will nude 'Potter' scene put off families? What gets me is I could understand it if it was in the books, or even if it was in line with the characters. However, it isn't in the books and the scene is against characterization. Harry and Hermione don't have a thing going on. Quote

Just_A_Guy Posted November 13, 2010 Report Posted November 13, 2010 I wonder if it will be part of the scene where fake Harry and Hermione address Ron right before he destroys the locket/horcrux?And MOE, I'm so telling your wife on you. Quote

NeuroTypical Posted November 13, 2010 Report Posted November 13, 2010 Anyone still want to argue that Harry Potter books are just fine, while The Golden Compass series is not? Quote
Dravin Posted November 13, 2010 Author Report Posted November 13, 2010 Anyone still want to argue that Harry Potter books are just fine, while The Golden Compass series is not?Not really but I'm failing to see how a Hollywood move to include skin really enters into that. Quote
beefche Posted November 13, 2010 Report Posted November 13, 2010 LM, there is no nudity in the HP books. This is a scene added for the movie. So, what does this topic have to do with Golden Compass? Quote
Wingnut Posted November 13, 2010 Report Posted November 13, 2010 Anyone still want to argue that Harry Potter books are just fine, while The Golden Compass series is not?Yep, I do. There's no nudity in the books. This is exclusively movie-made. Quote
Just_A_Guy Posted November 13, 2010 Report Posted November 13, 2010 Well, unless you count that scene where Harry wakes up and he's dead . . . or something. Quote
lizzy12 Posted November 13, 2010 Report Posted November 13, 2010 Wait..in the one coming out in two weeks? 'cause i was going to see that with a guy friend..and i don't want it to be awkward.. Quote
Wingnut Posted November 13, 2010 Report Posted November 13, 2010 Well, unless you count that scene where Harry wakes up and he's dead . . . or something. That's right, I forgot that part. Yeah, it was a little awkward to read.Wait..in the one coming out in two weeks?'cause i was going to see that with a guy friend..and i don't want it to be awkward..Less than two weeks. It is now after 11pm EST on Friday. The movie premieres at 12:01am next Friday. Yay!!!! Quote
MarginOfError Posted November 13, 2010 Report Posted November 13, 2010 Wait..in the one coming out in two weeks?'cause i was going to see that with a guy friend..and i don't want it to be awkward..Well, as long as the two of you don't watch the movie in similar attire, I don't see how it would be awkward. hordak Posted November 13, 2010 Report Posted November 13, 2010 (edited) If a child is too young to see the nude scene, which i assume will be pretty tame, then i would think them too young to watch a movie with so many deaths. Just an FYI there is a sort of "cross dressing" scene due to the affects of polyjuice potion from the pics i have seen:o Edited November 13, 2010 by hordak Quote
applepansy Posted November 13, 2010 Report Posted November 13, 2010 I'm glad to know about this. I won't be taking children until I see it myself. There is no nudity in the books. We're talking about teenagers here. I don't understand why there needs to be nudity. Quote
PrincessMe Posted November 14, 2010 Report Posted November 14, 2010 awwwwww maaan. That is duuumb! Quote

I don't understand why there needs to be nudity. That's what I was thinking, too, but JAG reminded me of one scene. It's when Harry dies and has the conversation with Dumbledore at the train station -- both Harry and Dumbledore were naked. I thought it was odd when I read it, and it didn't seem like there was any point. If I had to extrapolate any significance, I'd say that it was symbolic of the transparency of the rest of the situation -- Harry finally learning truth about Dumbledore, from Dumbledore. Quote
lizzy12 Posted November 14, 2010 Report Posted November 14, 2010 Wing, do you mean the whole Dumbldores gay thing? Quote
Wingnut Posted November 14, 2010 Report Posted November 14, 2010 Wing,do you mean the whole Dumbldores gay thing? When Harry dies, Dumbledore takes time to explain his own perspective of things. The book doesn't indicate that he's gay. J.K. Rowling said that she "always thought of Dumbledore as gay." But in that scene when Harry dies and is in Limbo (and is naked) that Dumbledore explains to Harry about being a Horcrux, and a lot of other things. Quote
Just_A_Guy Posted November 14, 2010 Report Posted November 14, 2010 Well, and maybe the idea that a) you don't take anything with you, and b) whatever "reality" exists in limbo, Harry has to create it one element at a time. Quote
carlimac Posted November 14, 2010 Report Posted November 14, 2010 Well, you don't even take your body with you, so what's the point of a naked body sitting in an empty train station or wherever it was? I don't know if that part is in the movie. And despite what JK Rowling always thought, I never got the inclination that Dumbledore was gay. There wasn't anything that remotely gave that impression. And don't try to point out otherwise. I don't want to know. Quote

There wasn't anything that remotely gave that impression. And don't try to point out otherwise. I don't want to know.I hadn't read any of the books yet when Rowling made that statement. By the time I got around to the last book, I was thoroughly lost and confused on the issue. In the last book, we learn of two past relationships Dumbledore has had -- both seemingly platonic. One is with Doge, who seems to just be a simpering, doting admirer. The other is Grindelwald, which is the one people seem to think of as more than platonic. I saw it as an intense friendship, much like Frodo and Sam (though many have suggested homoerotic elements to that one). But even by the end, I still didn't think there was any indication that Dumbledore was gay. Soulsearcher Posted November 14, 2010 Report Posted November 14, 2010 (edited) I guess i ask does it matter if he was? does it really change the character in any important way? Does he all of a sudden become less or different? Edited November 14, 2010 by Soulsearcher Quote
Just_A_Guy Posted November 14, 2010 Report Posted November 14, 2010 Frankly, social conservatives reacted exactly wrong to the news of Dumbledore's homosexuality. They should have lauded him as a (fictional, to be sure) example of a gay man who rejected his urges, embraced celibacy, and yet attained greatness. That would have helped their cause far more than going into conniptions with theories of "indoctrination" or whatever. Quote
Dravin Posted November 14, 2010 Author Report Posted November 14, 2010 Road-map of Conversation: 1) Unnecessary nudity. 2) Jokes 3) Harry Potter is on part of worse than another series based on the example of something being added by a Hollywood type that wasn't in the books. 4) Well there is technically nudity in the books. 5) Dumbledore is gay. What an tangled web we weave. Quote
LDSVALLEY Posted November 14, 2010 Report Posted November 14, 2010 Personally I hate Harry Potter but my family loves it. When I saw this thread I did some checking on the net. There is a likely hood of 2 nude scenes. One which the evil dude is tricking Ron by having him watch a romantic scene between Harry and Hermione where Harry is in a state of undress, there is conflicting information on the attire and involvement of Hermione. It also states there is at least one more nude scene but didn't say where. So the death scene would make sense. My daughter is nuts about Harry Potter and has been waiting for this movie. IF there is any nudity at all even if nothing sexual is visible she wont' go see it. Nor would we allow her to see it. When you guys see it let the rest of us know what is up with it. Quote
