The mere title of the production doesn't interest me. But what's the big fuss about this? If the majority of LDS agree it isn't blasphamous, what causes it to be so offensive? Is there explicit language used? Cos you don't have to be LDS so find that offensive.

Sorry off topic! Back on topic :) I still get a chuckle out of the OP and various other ObL pokes :)

It's a satire played on the missionary efforts of the Church. It leaves the impression that the mission is so caught up with spreading the message of the Book of Mormon that they do not see the real physical needs of the people (e.g. AIDS and such - as it is set in Africa).

And yes, it uses offensive language.

Offensive language can be a wide variety of words. But explicit language is especially sour. Does it lean towards one more than the other? I'll have to YouTube this musical. I'm sure it's a riot. If it's sarcazie, Hubby may be open to it lol.

When you say eff God, it's as offensive as you can get.

While Anatess mentioned it the topic is also discussed here: http://www.lds.net/forums/current-events/39153-really-good.html

While people vary in their reaction to profanity, for instance the occasional "F-bomb" in a movie isn't the largest disturber for me, that a song is pretty much dedicated to saying "F-you God!" with an ending line including a vulgar term for genitalia into the mix is enough to make me stay clear of the production. I'm sure there are songs that wouldn't offended me, and if someone had it on their iPod in a years time or what have you I'd probably listen to one of those other songs in isolation but I'm afraid it alone is enough to sink the musical as a comprehensive experience for me.

Shame on you, Anatess for considering seeing this! Gasp! You know the Prophet wouldn't approve!

I'm totally giving you a hard time. Yes, I can see THAT being a controversial issue. But will it surpass Jesus Christ Superstar?

I don't think anything can surpass that!

But then again... never say never.

I guess I'm a bit of a hypocrite. I found this Facebook thing to be in quite poor taste, but I found this joke on a friend's status the other day to be pretty funny:

To celebrate his death, a new drink has been concocted! It's called the Bin Laden, and it's two shots with a splash of water!

I've not seen the show, so I can't say for sure. But according to Wiki, this is how the missionaries in the show start out their missions, but not how they end them. From the synopsis:

The villagers are enchanted; they are baptized and accept Mormonism. They gain the confidence to resist the despot, who also finally converts. Price is astonished to learn that the importance of religion is not truth, but whether it helps people. Ironically, his faith, and that of the other missionaries, is revitalized, and they stay to help the village.

The ending of a play is usually what leaves the biggest impression, and thus, I don't see how people leave the show thinking what you said. I think they probably leave thinking it is true of new missionaries, but that these same missionaries are eventually humbled and matured by their missions.

Given I've seen that exact thing happen numerous times, I don't see the problem with The Book of Mormon plot, or that it leaves a negative impression at all. In fact, having now read the synopsis, I better understand why so many reviewers have said they came away with a more positive impression of the Church than they had held prior to seeing the show.

Maybe he shouldn't make his multiple wives wear burkas? If they were all running around in bikinis, he wouldn't need the porn

Now, all I have to do is see the title of this thread to start laughing.

Probably not very funny to women whose husbands struggle with porn use or abuse.

I'm not offended. I'm just pointing out that porn is a sensitive topic 'round these parts, and I don't imagine many people find that very funny, especially the women who feel inadequate because they think their husbands would rather look at porn than at them.

Heh.

I doubt that would keep one satisfied after a time, if they've been hooked.

One of the interesting things I read n abook that covered special ops tactics, is one method of weakening the opposition was to get porn then edit it so that the opposing faction's leaders were in it, and then distribute it to the opposing force in some manner or another.

They are reporting they found porn in the compound of Bin Laden. Experts say it's not unusual to find porn in these type of situations. Is there anything more disgusting than the people who push people to their deaths, take away their rights, suppress the women and children and men, and they themselves don't live by what they preach.

Osama Bin Laden Porn Stash? Pornography Discovered At Compound: Report

This is hardly surprising. My observation is that Islam, like Judaism (and many strains of Christianity), is a religion that produces a social construct closely bound to rules and their interpretation. We are all familiar with the anal-retentive, hidebound nature of the Pharisees of Christ's time, which apparently led many Jews to become, in Jesus' words, hypocrites. Islam seems often to resemble this. At least, it seems that way to me.

(Please note that a hypocrite is not "someone who says something but doesn't do it". That's called an imperfect human being. A hypocrite is someone who puts on a false face as a means of getting gain or achieving status while still participating in the actions he publicly condemns. Telling your kids that smoking is bad while you're puffing away on your cigs is not hypocrisy. Urging your followers to donate liberally to the Work of God that you're running while you siphon off money to live a lavish, and probably promiscuous, lifestyle is blatant hypocrisy.)

Call me a horrible person, but I'm glad Bin Laden is dead. After all the thousands that have killed themselves, and the thousands of innocents that have been killed, due to his work I feel no remorse at all in laughing at his expense. And I found the joke funny in its entirety.

I laughed and will laugh again if I see it again. It makes me feel sad that a person is so evil that the world cheers his death but it was what he did with his life that it went that way for him.

Frankly I was glad they dumped him in the ocean so no one could martyr OR mutilate him.

Humor is about the unexpected and I have to say I was not expecting that. :D
