I've been really curious how some of us have come up with our forum monikers. For instance, mine, Slamjet, to me is akin to my crash & burn personality; I'm constantly slamming into proverbial walls at high speeds because of ignorance, poor decisions and/or my desire to power through things. It's a fun screen name and it seems to fit me.

But when I see someone comes onto the board with dark and depressed names I've figured it's one of two things:

1) They're wanting to communicate their dark feelings and that they have little hope for happiness.

2) They're anti-Mormon and are being sarcastic.

So I throw out three questions:

1) How did you come up with your screen name?

2) Does your screen name have any particular meaning?

3) What is your general opinion and/or thoughts on others screen names?

Just curious.

1- I think this is obvious. I bet you can't guess my real name.... :P

2. No, or maybe I should make up a meaning now. Um....I have high energy? I like to get other people hyped up about stuff? Ok, now I sound like a cheerleader. I am not anymore.....maybe a lifetime ago.

3. I like to see creative usernames. I think some people might have downer names, but I have noticed many of those people don't seem like downers anymore, perhaps they have over come that part of them. (Thanks to LDS.Net.)

Mine is a rather oblique reference to David Letterman. One night he was poking fun at rock bands with funny names like Stone Temple Pilots, Smashing Pumpkins, etc. So he had these two dice with a random word on each side. He rolled them and ripplecut and buddha came up winner. He then spent the rest of the show announcing that Ripplecut Buddha would be the closing act.

I started using it as a screen name ever since. It doesn't have any special meaning beyond that, though it's extremely handy for throwing people for a loop when I use it on religious chatrooms:D

I pretty much take usernames for what they are, an annonymous identifier, though I do appreciate the more creative ones.

1) Ready for a story? Well, when I was in high school, I went by my middle name. I was in high school in the mid 1990's. I signed up for my very first email address in my junior year of high school. According to my classmates I was a wee bit crazy because I refused to participate in things that they did. Since I didn't have much of an imagination, when I made that email address, I used KrazyKay as my alias. Ever since then, I have used KrazyKay for many online forums or user name for signing in on different websites. Betcha could guess my middle name now, lol.

2) See answer to number 1.

3) I usually see screen names as a part of a person's personality peeking through. Like mine is a weakness in the imagination department while being considered crazy by those who are of the world, lol.

1) Mine is the nickname my Husband tagged me with.

2) I was born in Igloo South Dakota- It is the only nickname that has been given me that I like.

3) I don't think much of the ones that are random numbers & letters. Seems to me that they should be passwords, rather than screen names. I am not comfortable when real names are used, especially given and surnames.

I'm rather outdoorsy, and on any long trips I make every attempt possible to go along the "backroads" to get there. To me, it defines being back-to-basics. It's also the screenname i use everywhere else.

I love screennames. They're a blast! A modern opportunity to be creative.

I was watching some Kaiju Big Battle and saw Mr. Cube. And thus was born BLOCKY!

The only problem I have with others user names is that I often misinterpret their gender from them. Also, I find Vort's pic creepy.

1. Take your pick of the following excuses:

  • Due to my refusal to pick a major, BYU labeled me "variably oriented, reluctant to major", or VORTmajor.
  • It represents my tendency to get sucked into the vortex of debate and noise around me.
  • My parents didn't like me very much.

2. Yes, it identifies me to this group. No one else, just me. Very particular.

3. Everyone else's screen name sucks. (When you're named "Vort", you can pretty much criticize with impunity. What are people going to do? It's like being named "Butkus"; no one can add much insult to that injury.)

Ah, there goes jealousy, rearing its ugly head.

No, wait, that's just Blocky. My bad.

Mine is because I was either too lazy or lack imagination to come up with some witty username.

1. Its such a long story it would take three pages to get to the end. My screen name has evolved repeatedly. The only constant is apple which is part of my husband's company name.

2. Nope

3. I think they are interesting. I sometimes wonder how they came up with them and sometimes they fit their personality AFTER I get to know them. But often...they are just random bits of nonsense. :P

1. Combining an animal with my real name. I was playing a MUD (anyone remember those?) and my name wasn't appropriate for the server (not dirty or anything, just didn't fit the world they'd created) since I'd been leveling up on easy animal MOBs I came up with someone on the spot when a Moderator asked me to think of something else.

2. It doesn't have a particular meaning, but I have been using it for enough applications (RPG character names, profile names, user names and the like) that it's long since become comfortable to me.

3. They beat everyone using ID numbers.

I thought it was a clever anagram of "amp". Figured you were an electrical engineer or a shred guitarist.

Your husband works for Rapa Scrapple? Cool!

Back in 1980 as a missionary, when I worked in the Mission Office, everyone was assigned a Book of Mormon name by the Assistants. One of them had the nickname Rameumptom, which I thought was uber-cool. So, when I started doing forums on the Internet, I often used the nickname Rameumptom. Have been doing so for much of the last 20 years.

1. I wanted something positive. Originally, I thought of using Electlady because I love the scripture in D&C 25:3 "Behold, thy sins are forgiven thee, and thou art an elect lady...". I also wanted a name that would show my gender. But, Electlady didn't seem right, so I changed my mind and decided to use a name that was more personal to me and something that I would remember (I am notorious for not remembering passwords or usernames)--so I went with Classylady. And my avatar, the Mona Lisa, is a painting that I love, and I think of "class" whenever I see her painting. Whenever I open up my iphone, it's the picture of the Mona Lisa that I chose to have pop up for me to see. It reminds me of my trips to Paris and the Louvre where I've been able to see the Mona Lisa in person.

2. My screen name has a personal meaning to me. One of the greatest compliments I have ever received happened this way. While on my mission in Germany I could pretty much get along with everyone--both the elders and sisters who were slackers and those who were super straight. One of the slacker elders (a problem missionary) was in the LTM (now the MTC) at the same time I was, though a month ahead of me. After we were in Germany for about a year, I was transferred to a new city and getting to know the Elders in the new area. The district leader told me that he wasn't too sure about working with sister missionaries, but Elder B. (the problem missionary, that he had once worked with several months ago) had told him, that Sister R. (me) "is alright. She has class." Coming from that particular Elder, who was almost sent home several times, but he managed to stick it out, was a true compliment. And ever since then, I've tried to live up to that compliment. Also, I would much rather be thought of as someone who has class, rather than someone who is crass.

3. I like the names that I can read and actually say. Anything with just numbers or letters (which probably has meaning to the individual), doesn't haven't any meaning to me, so it's hard for me to remember them.

Opps goes to show me not to judge.

I thought Vort stood for the def. in the Urabn Dictionary of: To "pass wind while doing a leg motion of extreme intensity to create additional sound and scent. LOL

Actually I have more curiosity about Vort's photo then his name since the photo and profile don't seem to match. But then again I don't have a photo posted at all, and I am sure that Pam does not really look like a sugar bookie. LOL

My user name is boring in comparision but I admit to not being all that creative with creating user names. So LDSJewess is pretty much self explanatory. I am Jewish and I am a member of the LDS church.
