beefche Posted January 19, 2012 Report Posted January 19, 2012 (edited) BYU, my alma mater, has officially offended me. Thankfully, this new school won't be offsensive. Edited January 19, 2012 by Dravin Fixed your link, you don't need quotes around the URL. Quote
Dravin Posted January 19, 2012 Report Posted January 19, 2012 (edited) In other news the following mascots were also recently deemed inappropriate for the following reasons: Huskies: Fear of offending the overweight. Ragin' Cajuns: Fear of offending those with anger management issues. Horned Frogs: Fear of offending the French. Mean Green: Fear of offending environmentalists. Highlanders: There can be only one. applepansy Posted January 19, 2012 Report Posted January 19, 2012 I saw the article about the school a few days ago. I think they should pay attention to the students choice. They had the students go to all the trouble to vote. If they didn't want the kids input they shouldn't have asked for it. Decades ago when Woods Cross High was new, I was in the first class. We only had 9th and 10th graders the first couple of years and then we were sent to Viewmont or Bountiful High. But what I remember most about my time at Woods Cross is that we voted for colors and a mascot. Our choices were Red, White and Blue with Rebels and Orange, Brown and White with Wildcats. Red, White and Blue with Rebels won hands down in the student vote. It was a patriotic. I remember discussing the name Rebels and identifying with the Founding Fathers of the USA. The School Board, School District, and I don't remember who else weighed in, felt we were being Rebellious and that the name Rebels would make us more so rebellious. They ignored the vote and Woods Cross ended up being Red, White and Blue Wildcats. HUH? Everyone knows the Wildcats are orange brown and white. And the School is Orange and Brown. What is sort of funny is when someone finds out I was part of that first class they always ask how Wildcats got to be red, white and blue. LOL Quote
Guest mirancs8 Posted January 19, 2012 Report Posted January 19, 2012 Really?? Is this what it's come down to?? Quote
Dravin Posted January 19, 2012 Report Posted January 19, 2012 Apple: I would have simply gone on referring to Rebels not Wildcats for as long as I went to school there. Quote
pam Posted January 19, 2012 Report Posted January 19, 2012 I do happen to like the name that the school board chose though. :) Quote

pam Posted January 19, 2012 Report Posted January 19, 2012 Can't use Cougars but a school here can have Beetdiggers as their mascot. Go figure. Quote

annewandering Posted January 20, 2012 Report Posted January 20, 2012 Rebel Wildcats sounds like a great mascot to me. ^^ Maybe that new highschool ought call themselves Charging Cougars. My husband was finding a bunch of mascot names and it is not uncommon for the students to call their schools their own choice instead of the official one. Quote
mordorbund Posted January 20, 2012 Report Posted January 20, 2012 (edited) I remember the first time I left BYU campus and saw a Cosmo magazine. I was suprised that a magazine about our mascot wasn't on campus. I actually wasn't bothered that the content was something of a bait and switch - until I made it back to the dorm. Then I was shocked and appalled!!Back to the article, I thought the school did a good job of rejecting "Bats" out-of-hand (since the board is so concerned with offending old ladies). The school can go ahead and call themselves the Chargers, as long as they know that a charger looks like this: Edited September 5, 2012 by mordorbund Quote
RescueMom Posted January 20, 2012 Report Posted January 20, 2012 They call women who date younger men Cougars.... They should call men who date younger women...Rhinos. I think it's kind of funny that Cougars won't let there be a Cougar mascot. Funny that, I as a Cougar (not BYU) didn't get the memo that we were protesting such things. Quote

john doe Posted January 20, 2012 Report Posted January 20, 2012 Beet them up, Beet them down, beet them suckers into the ground! And the coach would have rich material for "dig deep" pep talks in the locker room.Huh. My high school mascot in Idaho was the Trojans. We couldn't think up any creative cheers that wouldn't get us suspended, especially after an article appeared in Playboy declaring our county as having the nation's highest teen pregnancy rate. We did come up with a fight song that was eerily similar to the Notre Dame fight song but the words were changed to turn it into a drinking and fighting song. Quote

Jennarator Posted January 20, 2012 Report Posted January 20, 2012 I lived in Rigby for a year and a half, just moved to IF in April. I still work close to Rigby. :) Quote
john doe Posted January 20, 2012 Report Posted January 20, 2012 I actually lived 3 miles southeast of town in the Clark area. Lived on Milo Road, but I hear they changed all the road names to numbers, so I don't know what road it is anymore. Quote
