FreeForA11 Posted February 20, 2013 Report Posted February 20, 2013 Hello everyone, I'm new here, I just got home from my mission 2 months ago. Anyways, I would like some imput on your thoughts about some of these career options and how they effect family life, especially as an lds family: Physical Therapist Federal Agent Police Officer Psychologist Teacher Counselor If anyone has had experience in these fields, your opinion would be great. I'll probably add more as I continue researching what would be interesting for me. Thanks Quote
Backroads Posted February 20, 2013 Report Posted February 20, 2013 I'm just going with the ones I have some experience with: My friend is a physical therapist at a hospital. He can work some lousy shifts, but generally it's fairly family-friendly. Police officer. Mom's friend used to do this. A respectable profession, but it also caused stress for the family (Is Mom going to get shot today?!?!?!) Teacher. I did this when I was single, but the hours seem suitable to a family. Quote
Anddenex Posted February 20, 2013 Report Posted February 20, 2013 When considering the choice between vocations I have always liked Elder Packer's words when he shared the moment he decided to be a seminary teacher he knew he needed to choose a spouse who was not only willing but could live the life of a seminary teacher's salary. Police Officer and Federal Agent will highly affect your family life, and my friends who entered into this field mentioned in their training that they said 50% of the class will be divorced. That was a statistic at their time, I am not sure now how it is. However, if you decide either of these two careers things, especially a federal agent you will have many periods of being away from your family. Thus choose a spouse who is willing and not only willing but that can accept the life style. The other jobs are really no different than any other career choice. Choose a spouse who is able to live the lifestyle that financially one of these vocations provides, and you should be fine with any of these careers. Quote
Bini Posted February 20, 2013 Report Posted February 20, 2013 I can only relate to PT because I've worked along side them with patients. Their schedules can be busy but generally they're not off the wall odd hours like other professions in rehabilitation, which can sometimes interfere with family time, and that "can" be problematic as the gospel puts great emphasis on making family priority. pam Posted February 20, 2013 Report Posted February 20, 2013 A teacher would be because you love teaching and love students. Most of them don't pay what they are worth. Quote
Finrock Posted February 20, 2013 Report Posted February 20, 2013 I'm not trying to be alarmist but it should at least be pointed out that the OP MAY not be who they claim to be. I have no evidence whatsoever and I am making no claims. I am saying that it is a common tactic for someone with malicious intent to use an internet forum to phish for information about careers, particularly about military or government type careers. If that isn't the case here, then I assure I mean no offense. Just wanted to point out a plausible reality. Regards, Finrock Quote

pam Posted February 20, 2013 Report Posted February 20, 2013 Thanks Iggy but that didn't answer my question. The OP's profile states he/she is from Monroe. I want to know which state. I have my reasons for asking. Quote
mirkwood Posted February 20, 2013 Report Posted February 20, 2013 The divorce rate in law enforcement is not 50%. In fact it is quite a bit lower. Being in law enforcement prior to getting married reduces the risk of divorce as well. Police work has it's pros and cons. Shift work, working holidays and weekends, dealing with the losers of society most of the time. Low pay, average benefits. You get a pension after 20 years. I've been an police officer for 16 years and I am still glad I made the choice. I'm not divorced, nor contemplating it. I'm active in the church. So, as you can see pros and cons. Quote
Irishcolleen Posted February 20, 2013 Report Posted February 20, 2013 You should choose a career that best uses the gifts God has given you. I have been blessed to a stay-at-home mom. I'll never regret giving up my career. Not everyone is able to stay at home given how difficult things are financially, and some people are miserable not working. Quote

NeuroTypical Posted February 20, 2013 Report Posted February 20, 2013 Sitcom is the best way to describe that horrendous travesty of what could otherwise have been a good prepper apocalypse show. Quote
