Still_Small_Voice Posted December 6, 2015 Report Posted December 6, 2015 General Motors says it will sell in the United States next year a vehicle made in China, becoming the first major United States automaker to do so. The move was quickly denounced by the powerful United Auto Workers union, which branded it "a slap in the face" and called for an immediate rethink. Just_A_Guy Posted December 6, 2015 Report Posted December 6, 2015 (edited) A pox on all their houses. UAW got an unwarranted sweetheart deal during the GM bailout a couple years back. And any global firm that trusts the Chinese with the intellectual property necessary to start manufacturing their product on Chinese soil and doesn't think there will be knock-offs being sold at half the price before you can say "piracy"--well, they deserve what they're about to get, good and hard. Still_Small_Voice Posted December 6, 2015 Author Report Posted December 6, 2015 (edited) I agree. Many Chinese have stolen trade secrets and ignored copyrights. From what I have read they also use slave labor on some of their exports. They have many political prisoners they use as slave labor. General Motors future doesn't look too good presently in my opinion. Edited December 6, 2015 by Still_Small_Voice Quote
JojoBag Posted December 7, 2015 Report Posted December 7, 2015 China has done this already in Australia,. The brand is called, "Great Wall," and the vehicles are pure junk. If the car lasts 30,000 miles, it should be gold plated and set on a pedestal. Quote

In Australia, GM is the owner of the brand, "Holden." They have closed all their plants and moved them to China. The Chinese look for ways to build products that will fail at a given time so you have to buy more of their garbage. Quote

More of a consequence of trying to cut every corner you can to get things out quick as possible with the least amount of effort and cost, consequences bedamned. If you can drastically reduce the cost of every sector, you can pull the industry to you, which is a good tactic- it lets you get control of other people, as well as giving your people an education in the industry.china has been playing catch up over the last century and they don't care how they do it- the ends justify the means. Ironhold Posted December 8, 2015 Report Posted December 8, 2015 Thing is, US law stipulates that if a vehicle is to be sold in America, spare parts must be available for so many years past the model year (10, IIRC). Because of this, no matter how garbage this vehicle is, the Chinese factories are legally on the hook for providing replacement parts, and the dealer is on the hook as far as the warranty goes. The cars themselves may be cheap, but warranty, repairs, and whatnot may come back to haunt them. Blackmarch 1 Quote
unixknight Posted December 8, 2015 Report Posted December 8, 2015 (edited) You mean the UAW is mad that they pushed for ever higher wages and now the company moved production elsewhere? (again) Didn't see that coming. /sarcasm Edited December 8, 2015 by unixknight Blackmarch and JojoBag 2 Quote
