  1. I would hazard to guess that a big part of it is that the normal support systems parents (especially stay-at-home moms) have traditionally relied on—grandparents and aunts/uncles, neighbors, church and other social groups—are, to some extent, eroding. Additionally—COVID parenting is just plain harder. Fewer functioning preschools/social activities for kids to go to that give parents a respite for part of the day. Fewer functioning youth programs, restaurants, amusement parks, and other available activities with which parents can incentivize good behavior. I know that at work, I usually handle 3-4 new DCFS child welfare petitions per month. But between yesterday and today alone, I’ll have drafted six. Things are tough out there, and parents are snapping.

  2. I’m actually fine being made fun of. I think the best way to lower public opinion of you is to take a joke seriously. If we can laugh at ourselves with everyone else, then we win.

  3. It has been a while since I tried a game of LDS Trivia and Puzzles, so this weekend is the time: tonight, which is Friday, between 6:30 PM and 8:00 PM; tomorrow all day from 10 AM to 7 PM; and Sunday from 1:30 PM to 7:30 PM. All times are Pacific Daylight Time (PDT). For those outside North America, compare your time zone with Seattle, Washington. There will only be one session this weekend, so I'll post again when a session completes. The game is on DALnet in channel #lds_trivia. Please see the website for more information on how to get to the game. I don't believe I have anybody signed up for the notify list or newsletter at the time of writing this, so I'm going to post three random questions here. Rack your brains to get the answers but do not send me the answers until prompted in the channel when the game starts. I will post the answers in the newsletter after a game,. Good luck. See you there. Book of Mormon: True or false? A man tries to take revenge on Ammon for killing his brother during Ammon's defending of king Lamoni's flocks. As the guy lifted his sword to kill Ammon while on the floor, the guy dropped dead instantly. Old Testament: According to the Bible Dictionary, the book of Judges gives a history of how many judges? Old Testament: "And shall (blank) and not be weary, and shall walk and not faint." A) Walk, B) run, C) stand, or D) jog?

    Winter is coming

Trying to tell my parents that we need to start stocking up on water and that, once we know whether or not we'll have family coming up for the holidays, getting the military rations we have in the storage shed back into the house. I'm slowly trying to get them to stock up on AAA batteries as well since I have flashlights that run on them.

    Winter is coming

You can't "winterize" a transmission grid and the associated generation in a short time. It's a multi-year proposal. It's a bit like hoping that Texas builds enough highways and roads in a year to relieve all traffic jams. Infrastructure isn't something that can be changed quickly. Your state PUC is the entity that controls how much investment is made in the grid, not the power companies. The PUC holds the purse strings by limiting the ROI for utilities. No utility builds anything unless they know that they can recover the costs.

  6. I can only imagine what it's like on your side! I've had to make three CPS calls myself this year, which is unheard of for me in my career. People certainly are stressed.
