  4. Humility, Humble Introduction: Elder Spencer W. Kimball - Humility is teachableness-an ability to realize that all virtues and abilities are not concentrated in one's self. . . . Humility is never accusing nor contentious. . . . Humility is repentant and seeks not to justify its follies. It is forgiving others in the realization that there may be errors of the same kind or worse chalked up against itself. . . . Humility makes no bid for popularity and notoriety; demands no honors. . . . It is not self-abasement-the hiding in the corner, the devaluation of everything one does or thinks or says; but it is the doing of one's best in every case and leaving of one's acts, expressions, and accomplishments to largely speak for themselves. ("Humility," Brigham Young University Speeches of the Year, Provo, Utah, 16 Jan. 1963) TLDP:292; DCSM:27 See alsoBroken Heart; Meek, Meekness; Poor; Pride; Weakness Definition: To make meek and teachable, or the condition of being meek and teachable. Humility includes recognizing our dependence upon God and desiring to submit to his will. History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: And thus was this error [Oliver Cowdery's claim that he had discovered an error in one of the revelations, viz., D&C 20:37] rooted out, which having its rise in presumption and rash judgment, was the more particularly calculated (when once fairly understood) to teach each and all of us the necessity of humility and meekness before the Lord, that He might teach us of His ways, that we might walk in His paths, and live by every word that proceedeth forth from His mouth. (Joseph Smith, History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 7 Vols. 1:105) Great harmony prevailed; several were ordained; faith was strengthened; and humility, so necessary for the blessing of God to follow prayer, characterized the Saints. (Joseph Smith, History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 7 Vols. 1:176-77) [A general epistle from Zion] was read by the brethren in Kirtland with feelings of the deepest interest, knowing as we did, that the anger of the Lord was kindled against you, and nothing but repentance, of the greatest humility, would turn it away. (Joseph Smith, History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 7 Vols. 1:340) Had you made such confession as you were required to, at Chippeway, all things would have worked together for your good, and as I told you; but you did not manifest that degree of humility to the brethren that was required, but remained obstinate; for that reason God withdrew His Spirit from you, and left you in darkness. (Joseph Smith, History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 7 Vols. 1:370) Brother Ezra Thayre and Joseph Hancock are sick with the cholera. Thomas Heyes was taken today. Previous to crossing the Mississippi river I had called the camp together and told them that in consequence of the disobedience of some who had been unwilling to listen to my words, but had rebelled, God had decreed that sickness should come upon the camp, and if they did not repent and humble themselves before God they should die like sheep with the rot; that I was sorry, but could not help it. The scourge must come; repentance and humility may mitigate the chastisement, but cannot altogether avert it. But there were some who would not give heed to my words. (Joseph Smith, History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 7 Vols. 2:106-7) Minutes: President Joseph Smith, Jun., arose, and said, . . . that Brother Jared Carter . . . , not being sufficiently humble to deliver just the message that was required, . . . stumbled and could not get the Spirit. (Joseph Smith, History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 7 Vols. 2:280) Thus came the word of the Lord unto me concerning the Twelve, saying Behold they are under condemnation, because they have not been sufficiently humble in my sight, and in consequence of their covetous desires, in that they have not dealt equally with each other in the division of the monies which came into their hands, nevertheless, some of them dealt equally, therefore they shall be rewarded; but verily I say unto you, they must all humble themselves before me, before they will be accounted worthy to receive an endowment, to go forth in my name unto all nations. . . . The residue [of the Twelve] are not sufficiently humble before me. (Joseph Smith, History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 7 Vols. 2:300, 301) I then addressed them and gave much instruction calculated to guard them against self-sufficiency, self-righteousness, and selfimportance; touching upon many subjects of importance and value to all who wish to walk humbly before the Lord, and especially teaching them to observe charity, wisdom and fellow-feeling, with love one towards another in all things, and under all circumstances. (Joseph Smith, History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 7 Vols. 3:383) Long-suffering, patience, and mercy have ever characterized the dealings of our heavenly Father towards the humble and penitent. (Joseph Smith, History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 7 Vols. 4:163) It would be gratifying to my mind to see the Saints in Kirtland flourish, but think the time is not yet come; and I assure you it never will until a different order of things be established and a different spirit manifested. When confidence is restored, when pride shall fall, and every aspiring mind be clothed with humility as with a garment, and selfishness give place to benevolence and charity, and a united determination to live by every word which proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord is observable, then, and not till then, can peace, order and love prevail. It is in consequence of aspiring men that Kirtland has been forsaken. How frequently has your humble servant been envied in his office by such characters, who endeavored to raise themselves to power at his expense, and seeing it impossible to do so, resorted to foul slander and abuse, and other means to effect his overthrow. Such characters have ever been the first to cry out against the Presidency, and publish their faults and foibles to the four winds of heaven. (Joseph Smith, History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 7 Vols. 4:166) God exalts the humble, and debases the haughty. (Joseph Smith, History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 7 Vols. 6:74) Other Journals: The true principle of honor in the Church of the Saints, that the more a man is exalted, the more humble he will be, if actuated by the Spirit of the Lord, seemed to have been overlooked. (Joseph Smith, The Papers of Joseph Smith, 2 vols. 1:23) Page 1 of 2
  5. Interesting and we need to reminded many times in the near future when the world changes, never put trust in the arm of flesh. Robert millet made a great narration of his opinion regarding this statement, along with "shall hearken to the precepts of men" in verse 31: 31. Cursed is he that putteth his trust in man] Man's ultimate trust must forever be in the Lord God. Man's foundation must always be the Rock of Christ; otherwise the winds and storms of adversity will bring one's house of faith to a fall, leaving only a heap of rubble (see Helaman 5:12). "Thus saith the Lord; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the Lord. For he shall be like the heath [juniper tree] in the desert, and shall not see when good cometh; but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land and not inhabited. Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river . . . . neither shall cease from yielding fruit." (Jeremiah 17:5-8.) 31. Shall hearken unto the precepts of men] Even among Church members, the Saints of the Most High-those who have by covenant come out of the world into the Church of God- there are those who seek to keep one foot in the world. They have a residence in Zion but visit Babylon periodically. Their membership may be in the former but their hearts are in the latter. Their ultimate trust may be in the power of God, but their interim interest is the arm of flesh. Too many in the Church today "err because they are taught by the precepts of men" rather than by the scriptural canon, the words of the living oracles, or the revelations of the Holy Spirit. The theories of men accent their teachings, and the philosophies of the learned determine their course in life: they view the world (and even the workings of God) through the lenses of their own particular discipline or field of study. There are among us many learned and adept educators who teach things that are contrary to the divine will; they seem to be more concerned with sustaining the dogmas of their academic disciplines than in discovering ultimate truth. There are historians of self-announced renown whose works are false, much of their "writing being harmfully speculative and out of harmony with the divine will. Feigning scholarly detachment, some of the learned reach false conclusions by giving full credence to the biased opinions of those who oppose the Lord and his cause. In determining the divine Sonship of the Lord Jesus they interview both Peter and Caiaphas, consider them both to be extremists, and conclude in their own wisdom that there must be some alternative explanation of our Lord's greatness that grew out of the social and religious milieu of the day. The Saints of God may be educators, authors, scientists, or historians; they may be soldiers, farmers, or judges; they may be shepherds of sheep or drovers of cattle; they may earn their bread in any one of a thousand temporal pursuits. All of these things, however are but avocations. They are also and preeminently the elders or sisters of Israel and the Saints of the Most High. They are the Lord's agents and his representatives. These are their true vocations. Their labors in our Father's business must take precedence over all else. Through those labors they earn the eternal bread of which men may eat and never hunger more. If and when there is a conflict of interest between members' earthly pursuits and their heavenly pursuits, it is time to take stock and choose to walk in the course charted from on high. The Saints' chief obligation is to follow the Lord and work for his interests. Their pledge, sworn on the altars of God, is and must be that they will never do anything to destroy faith; they must never perform an act or espouse a cause that runs counter to the needs and purposes of the Church. if this means they forsake the course their colleagues in the world pursue, so be it. Each member must come to believe and declare with soberness: "The kingdom of God or nothing!" (Doctrinal Commentary on the Book of Mormon, vol. 1, by Robert L. Millet, Joseph Fielding McConkie, P.345-346)

    2 Nephi 28:32

Brother of Nephi, Jacob, may have read Nephi's works and added his thoughts. Yet, there is almost no limit to the Lord's mercy, no end to his longsuffering with his children. "How merciful is our God unto us," exulted Jacob, "for he remembereth the house of Israel, both roots and branches; and he stretches forth his hands unto them all the day long." Jacob further implored the covenant people to "repent, and come with full purpose of heart, and cleave unto God as he cleaveth unto you. And while his arm of mercy is extended towards you in the light of the day, harden not your hearts." (Jacob 6:4-5.)
  7. Well stated Roseslipper...anything less than the highest order of the celestial kingdom, will not part of the eternal schema of families. They remain single outside of the family lines. It is sad though. As my own motto stated, I truly wish we can save many as we can to be a united family forever. However, this will not happen.
  8. This was my point. It gives a different perspective of the author viewpoint. I use this method when I do the D&C scripture thread. Mixing from different authors to give a another viewpoint.
  9. Maya, I deeply appreciate you in checking on those who posted in the intro forum. Darrel, if you are a writer, we could use your help in the scripture forum. But I do welcome you to the forum.

Since it was written in Egyptian tongue and not French or English, Oliblish - Enish go on dosh, and Kaii ven rash, are the three grand central powers that govern all the other creations, which have been sought out by the most aged of all the fathers, since the beginning of the creation, by means of the Urim and Thummim (written by Joseph Smith Jr.) : The names of the other twelve of the fixed stars are: 1. Kolob, 2. Limdi, 3. Zip, 4. Vusel, 5. Venisti, 6. Waine, 7. Wayoh=ox=oan, 8. Oansli, 9. Shible, 10. Shineflis, 11. Flis, 12. Os.
  14. Ellis T. Rasmussen stated it perfectly: 22:13-30 - If any man take a wife, and go in unto her, and hate her, And give occasions of speech against her, and bring up an evil name upon her A man must not impute unchastity to his wife or commit adultery with another's wife or with a virgin. If rape was committed in a field, out of the city, so that a damsel's outcry would not be heard, he who does it is to be considered guilty, but she is free. If a man was intimate with a virgin not betrothed, he must pay a heavy fine, marry her, and never "put her away." Finally, the prohibition against incest was reiterated (Deut. 22:13-30 and fn.). (Latter-day Saint Commentary on the Old Testament by Ellis T. Rasmussen, p.184) Hugh B. Nibley stated the obvious but you have to admire his texture comparisons: Anyone who takes advantage of a virgin must marry her and pay her father handsomely, for "he hath humbled her" (Deuteronomy 22:28-29). One who is just married is not permitted to go to war, for by law he must stay home one year and "cheer up" his bride (Deuteronomy 24:5). It is base to question the virginity of a bride (Deuteronomy 22:13-30), and one who refuses to beget issue by his brother's widow is openly held in contempt, though he cannot be punished—he has offended her human feelings (Deuteronomy 25:5-10). (Approaching Zion by Hugh Nibley, Don E. Norton) I wonder these individuals understand what could happen to Mary, the Mother of Jesus the Christ. Remember in Matthew where it stated Mary was pregnant and espoused to Joseph? Daniel Ludlow made a point about this interesting remark and comparing it to Deuteronomy: 1:24 Mary was espoused to Joseph. They were not married but were promised to each other under the strictest terms. Mary was virtually regarded as the wife of Joseph, and unfaithfulness on her part during the espousal period was punishable by death (Deuteronomy 22:23, 24). During the espousal period, the bride-elect lived with her family or friends, and all communication between herself and her promised husband was carried on through a friend. When Joseph learned of Mary's prospective maternity and knew he was not the father, he had two alternatives: (1) he could demand that Mary submit to a public trial and judgment, which even at that late point in Jewish history may have resulted in Mary's death; or (2) he could privately sever the espousal contract before witnesses. Joseph obviously chose the most merciful of the two alternatives. He could have reacted selfishly and with bitterness when he learned that Mary was expecting, and it is a profound witness to Joseph's character that he chose to annul the espousal privately. Of this, Elder James E. Talmage has written: "Joseph was a just man, a strict observer of the law, yet no harsh extremist; moreover he loved Mary and would save her all unnecessary humiliation, whatever might be his own sorrow and suffering. For Mary's sake he dreaded the thought of publicity; and therefore determined to have the espousal annulled with such privacy as the law allowed." (Jesus the Christ, p. 84.) It may be that the Lord designed such an experience to test Joseph, and if that be the case, Joseph proved faithful. After Joseph had made his decision, then the angel visited him and directed that he should proceed and take Mary as his wife. Mary's high station was known before she was born (Mosiah 3:8; Alma 7:10; 1 Ne. 11:15, 18-21; Isaiah 7:14), and Joseph no doubt was foreordained to the honored station that he held, for the Prophet Joseph Smith taught that "every man who has a calling to minister to the inhabitants of the world was ordained to that very purpose in the Grand Council of heaven before this world was." (Teachings, p. 365. Italics added.) Surely Joseph was a noble soul in premortality to be blessed with the signal honor of coming to earth and acting as the legal guardian of the Son of the Eternal Father in the flesh. (LTJA, p. 22.) (Companion to Your Study of the New Testament: The Four Gospels by Daniel H. Ludlow, p.27-28) I think you got it by now what is the right answer to this scripture reference.
  15. Beside what others have stated, He also visited the "other lost sheep" after the third day. Just not only the Americas, England, Ten-Tribes, and two translated cities. Other location that are not listed in our current scriptures that GOD had lead away for HIS wise purposes.

  18. August 7, 1831— Kaw Township, Jackson County, Missouri. Joseph Smith attended the funeral of Sister Polly Knight, the first Church member to pass away in Missouri, and received D&C 59, a revelation about Sabbath observance. History of the Church, 1:199–200 Place. Jackson County, Missouri. Publication Note. Section 59 was first published in the Evening and Morning Star (July 1833) and was included as chapter 60 in the Book of Commandments in 1833. Historical Setting: B.H. Roberts - Polly Knight's health had been failing for some time, according to a statement made by her son, Newel. She was very ill during her journey from Kirtland to Missouri, "Yet," says her son, "She would not consent to stop traveling; her only, or her greatest desire was to set her feet upon the land of Zion, and to have her body interred in that land. I went on shore and bought lumber to make a coffin in case she should die before we arrived at our place of destination— so fast did she fail. But the Lord gave her the desire of her heart, and she lived to stand upon that land."—Scraps of Biography, p. 70. (HC, Vol. 1, p. 199, Footnote) Joseph Smith, Jun. – On the 7th I attended the funeral of Sister Polly Knight, the wife of Joseph Knight, Sen. This was the first death in the Church in this land, and I can say, a worthy member sleeps in Jesus till the resurrection. I also received the following: [section 59, follows.] (HC 1:199, August 7, 1831; Zion, Jackson County, Missouri.) Background Narration: Richard O. Cowan - Soon after the arrival of the Colesville Saints, Sister Polly Knight (wife of Joseph Knight, Sr.) passed away, the first Latter-day Saint to die in the land of Zion. Her funeral was held on Sunday, August 7, 1831. It was in this setting that D&C 59 was received. Verses 1-4 were a message of comfort and encouragement to the Saints. Beginning in verse 5, the Lord reviewed with them some of the basic commandments which can be grouped under the two great commandments-love of God and love of neighbor. Verse 21 warns that one should recognize the Lord's hand in all things, and verse 23 summarizes the fruits of righteous living in a most meaningful way. (Doctrine and Covenants, Our Modern Scripture by Richard O. Cowan) Steven C. Harper Doctrine and Covenants 59 begins by blessing those who have come to Zion to serve God with all they have and are. Those who live shall inherit the earth; those who die shall rest for the present and receive exaltation after the resurrection. The Lord is well pleased with the first Saints to gather obediently to Zion. He rewards them with the earth and its bounty. The revelation reiterates the law of consecration, which, simply put, is the two great commandments: "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, with all thy might, mind, and strength; and in the name of Jesus Christ thou shalt serve him" (v. 5). Then follows a review of the Decalogue, or the Ten Commandments, to which the Lord adds commandments to thank God in all things and to offer him a broken heart. He gives a specific purpose for observing the Sabbath day: "That thou mayest more fully keep thyself unspotted from the world, thou shalt go to the house of prayer and offer up thy sacraments upon my holy day" (v. 9). The Sabbath is for offering oblations—that is, time, talents, and material resources—for the establishment of Zion. It is a day of fasting and prayer (v. 14). The Lord makes a covenant with the Saints in Zion: if they will keep the commandments thankfully and cheerfully yet soberly, he will give them the fullness of the earth—its plants and animals "for food and for raiment, for taste and for smell, to strengthen the body and to enliven the soul" (v. 19). (Making Sense of the Doctrine and Covenants by Steven C. Harper) Section Header Notes: Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet, in Zion, Jackson County, Missouri, 7 August 1831 (see History of the Church, 1:196–201). Preceding his record of this revelation, the Prophet writes descriptively of the land of Zion, wherein the people were then assembled. The land was consecrated, as the Lord had directed, and the site for the future temple was dedicated. The Lord makes these commandments especially applicable to the Saints in Zion. 1–4, The faithful Saints in Zion will be blessed; 5–8, They are to love and serve the Lord and keep his commandments; 9–19, By keeping the Lord’s day holy, the Saints are blessed temporally and spiritually; 20–24, The righteous are promised peace in this world and eternal life in the world to come. Versus amount: 24Suggested link: D&C Summary and Conclusion: As the Lord declared in the beginning of this revelation, commandments are given as blessings for His people. One of these blessings is the receiving of additional commandments in their time. (See D&C 59:4) The commandments of the Lord provide the formula by which one masters the flesh and remains unspotted from the world. This is the doorway to obtaining " . . . peace in this world, and eternal life in the world to come." (D&C 59:23) Pres. George Q. Cannon emphasized the value of keeping the Lord's commandments when he said: Jesus, the Son of God, has attained to His exalted station by obeying the very principles that constitute our religion. The angels that surround the throne of our Almighty Father have received their exaltation and glory by obeying these principles, observing one law after another until the whole character is transformed and becomes Godlike. (Gospel Truth, Vol. 2, p. 12) This is the spirit of this revelation and the purpose of Zion. (Sacred Truths of the Doctrine and Covenants , vol. 1 by L. G. Otten, C. M. 19. I may have to tried that...but, usually, I will add it to my electronic versions after reading it. Meaning, being destructive to the book by copying each pages electronically. :) What is the best part about the book?
  20. Like you, I do isten to all musical genre(s) and appreciate people talents to bring such to the consumer. Favorite of all is Pink Floyd. Having three guitars (acoustic, and two steel strings Les Paul’s models) at home, I tried to get some of my children in learning how to play but with no luck. I have been lately collecting the Hearts of Space (Internet Radio ouf of California) hour segments of different genre themes to add to my work PC. Again, welcome to the forum.
