New to this part of parenting- a big question
Wingnut replied to Irishcolleen's topic in General Discussion
But did you ever fly across the country on your date's parents' dime in order to meet his family? It's a little different. -
Mormon Porn Use Maybe Not As High as Previously Reported
Wingnut replied to Just_A_Guy's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
Speaking to the issue of use/viewing vs. addiction, go to 1:23 (almost 1:24) in this video. It's a news story about tells a woman's experience, but that particular few seconds speaks about this topic specifically. http://www.azcentral.com/videos/news/local/gilbert/2014/04/23/8040355/ -
Okay...these are all very subjective questions. Therefore, it's inaccurate to use them to "test" you. "Testing" you requires asking questions that have specific answers. These are good discussion questions, though.

This thread has much need for a laugh button. Lol.

My husband and I bought a house a year and a half after we got married. He had just completed his Masters' program, and we were moving to a new state and a new job. At that time, we were able to qualify for home loans based on my then-current income, as well as his contracted income-to-be. We didn't have money saved for a down payment, and instead took out two mortgages (an 80/20 arrangement). I love our home. We have brought both our daughters home from the hospital to this home. We have lived here for nearly seven years now. We have made memories in this home. We have made friends in this home and in this neighborhood. I wouldn't trade those things for anything. But I can't tell you how much I long for us to be out of debt. If I knew then what I know now, I'd have pushed a little harder for us to think about renting a home before buying. Pam is right -- you can't fathom the expenses that come up with home ownership (plumbing, electrical, minor repairs, rodent/pest control, etc.). On a month-to-month basis, you also need to consider property tax, homeowners' insurance, etc. Get out of debt! If you want to hold onto some of the student loans to show a record of consistently paying off your debt, that's fine. But get out of your consumer debt! It will be a blessing and a weight off your shoulders! I went shopping with my sister yesterday. She's visiting from out of town and needed to get some new jeans and shirts. I tried on a lot of clothes, too, but I had a really hard time with the idea of even buying a $10 shirt, because I didn't know if we could spare it this month. (The shirt was originally $25, and was even marked down!) If we were in less debt, I would feel less guilt about even a small purchase such as that. Being out of debt would be a huge blessing, partly because I could occassionally treat myself (or others), but more because I could do it without stressing or feeling guilty about it. Pay off whatever has the highest interest rate first. That usually puts student loans at the bottom of the list. Also, if for some reason one of you had to claim unemployment, your student loans could be put on hiatus (I have a friend who is about to be in this position).

Question about inactivity and garments
Wingnut replied to CertifiableGranny's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
The question regarding garments is not included when interviewing someone for their own endowments. It's only included in recommend renewal interviews. I've been taught the same thing as Anatess. Basically, the only reason you should ever stop wearing your garments is if your Priesthood leader(s) specifically tells you not to do so, and it would be quite unusual for him to do that. -
Wrong. Habakkuk is in the Old Testament. The correct answer to that question (I believe) would be Zephaniah. Oh, oh! I know!! Okay, I'm confused. You keep dodging questions by saying things like "that's scripture related." What is the Gospel, if you exclude the Scriptures?

General Conference Oldies but Goodies
Wingnut replied to Just_A_Guy's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
Looks like they're fixed now. -
I've noticed something in the last day or two. Yesterday it was on one of MOE's posts, and this morning in a post from JAG, both experienced posters who are familiar with basic posting how-tos. They each shared links in a post (each time it was also the first post in a thread, which might make a difference?), but the links only went directly to the thread in which they were being posted. I'm not sure if that makes sense. It was kind-of like a "how do you keep an idiot busy?" circle. I think this is likely a problem with the software, not the posters, because there's no way they could link to their own thread (even by accident) before the thread was even created...

General Conference Oldies but Goodies
Wingnut replied to Just_A_Guy's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
Your links just circle back to this thread. I noticed it yesterday also with someone else's post as well. Kind-of a "how do you keep an idiot busy?" circle. -
Wahooo!!! The "View New Content" button is working in the Full Version now. Thank you Pam, and the behind-the-scenes site admins!

Whether or not the LBD is a wardrobe staple is not the issue. Yes it's versatile. Yes, it's practical. Yes, every women "should" have one. But it's not something you wear to a typical mid-week Relief Society activity. And no one should feel pressured to do so, or guilted/shamed if they don't or can't.

The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho. Best book I've read in years.

I love these kinds of moments. I love shared faith across demoninations. My neighbor across the street is one of my best friends. She's not LDS, but is familiar with the Church. A few of our other neighbors are in my ward, and this friend grew up with an LDS best friend. I use LDS terminology around her, because she is relatively familiar with it, and I know that she knows that I'm not trying to push it on her. We have spiritual conversations frequently. She and her family came to Sacrament meeting last year to see my daughter in the Primary Program. My daughter has attended Vacation Bible School at her church. I really enjoy this aspect of our relationship, because I feel strengthened by her faith. And I feel strengthened by my ability to share mine with her, without fear of judgement or loss. It's also a good reminder to me that while I may believe that the LDS Church is the "only true church," it's not the only church with truth, faith, or good people. Growing up in the Church, it can sometimes be easy to forget that.

Well there's your problem.

Inviting the missionaries for dinner
Wingnut replied to Dreams_Of_Deutschland's topic in General Discussion
It has been around for a long time, but it's never been a rule. The white missionary handbook says something to the effect that meals with members should occur between 5-6pm, or whatever the local custom may be. Those are the exact words, but it's something along those lines. That may have changed since I was a missionary (10-12 years ago), but I doubt it. I think the idea of 5pm dinner is a relic of the mid-twentieth century, and just isn't realistic anymore. -
(In addition to many of the above...) "NOT TO FIFTY!!!!" "I'm on the brute squad." "You are the brute squad." "Truly, you have a dizzying intellect." "There is a shortage of perfect breasts in this world. It would be a pity to damage yours." (This one always strikes me as odd, because it doesn't really fit in at all with the rest of the movie, or with the idea of a family film, or with a story that a grandfather is reading to a young child.) "What about the ROUSes?" "Rodents of Unusual Size? I don't believe they exist." ***THUD*** "You mocked me once -- never do it again! I died that day! And you can die too, for all I care!" "I could give you my word as a Spaniard." "No good. I've known too many Spaniards." "Good night, Westley. Good work. Sleep well. I'll most likely kill you in the morning."

Inviting the missionaries for dinner
Wingnut replied to Dreams_Of_Deutschland's topic in General Discussion
We have this problem in my ward as well. On top of that, the bulk of my ward are young families either in medical school, or medical residency. Translation: long hours, unpredictable schedule, etc. Such rigid time constraints around the dinner hour make it difficult for the missionaries to get into member homes at all. It's been a rule where I live under the last several mission presidents. Yet at the same time, we all get guilted and shamed for not having the missionaries over for dinner more often. Between this and some other problems I've had with missionaries in my area, and the ward mission, I've kind-of just thrown my hands up at this point. My philosophy has become this: If the mission president wants the missionaries to work with members and build relationships of trust that result in referrals and baptisms, then he needs to allow the missionaries to visit with members at the members' convenience. If he won't, it's not my problem. -
After seeing this post, I did a little Googling, and what I found was twofold: (1) David Duchovny, in an interview about his series Californication, said that a third X-Files movie is an eventual certainty, even though there's nothing happening around it right now. (2) The creator of X-Files is returning to TV with a series called "Area 51."

So basically, based on actual events? The Browns might as well be a fictional team...lol.

If you've only got four days, I think I'd probably stay in Wyoming, because it's closer to you than Canada is. More time to be there, less time getting there. Unless road-tripping is your thing.

Will there be one in the Full Version, or only in the IPS version?

At the top of your page, on the right-hand side, you should see your name and avatar. Hover over it, then click on "log out" from the drop-down menu. This is present on each and every page. Yep, there currently doesn't seem to be any spell check mechanism in place.
