  1. I honestly couldn't see why the church would break ties with the BSA over allowing gay scouts, nor do I see it happening should the BSA lift the ban for gay scout leaders. official release here.
  2. At least they'd have beat the pizza guy... Once more, imagine how differently this would have turned out if the soldier had been permitted to carry his own sidearm for personal defense. We need to be allowed to stand up against oppression, however it chooses to reveal itself. We also need to be allowed the best tools available to hold off oppression, up to and including physical assault.
  3. knees (personal affliction..... )
  4. Thank you for pointing this out. Yes Jesus had glory with the Father before his mortal ministry. However at this point, he is requesting that it be returned to him. This means that Jesus' condescention into mortality cost him something. Something powerful and wonderous. Why else would he be asking to have it returned to him? Further, could Jesus be seen as legitimately perfect without posessing the glory he had prior to his mortal birth? To put a more fine point on this, even if Jesus had posessed the glory of his pre-mortal existence, would he have been perfect? If he were still born into mortality, the answer must still be 'no'. Mortality is the physical realization of imperfection. Nothing in this world lasts forever. According to the understanding of science, the laws of entropy, or decay and death as seen on this earth, also apply to the universe at large. Stars are born and die. Galaxies form, age, then wither away. More recently it has even been determined that black holes evaporate slowly. The entire point of Jesus' ministry was to willingly condescend, or lower himself, to the same rules and trials we all face. In order for that desire to be realized he had to be rendered imperfect physically, and spiritually, just as we all are. He had to be subjected to the same mortal pains and sorrows, the same spiritual trials and temptations. He had to pass the test we all face so that we could have the opportunity to join with him in his inheritance from the Father. It is only through his Atonement that he was able to become what he is today. It is only through the Atonement and his grace that we are able to enjoy the blessings he is offering us, including the chance to return, clean and perfected through his blood, to the presence of the Father for eternity.
  5. My two bits.....Let it go. Yes it seems inappropriate, however neither of the individuals directly involved seemed to be uncomfortable about it. It bugs you, but then you weren't intended to be involved. Part of having agency is accepting the fact that others will act inappropriately in public. I can understand how you would be offended by it, but really....it didn't seem to matter by the end of that day. Don't let it be an issue any longer. If anything wrong did take place, they will answer for it themselves. Nobody else was harmed....just let it go. There are more important issues to worry about than this.
  6. Applepansy, there is something you keep passing over. Here's what I said earlier; You said yourself that Jesus was perfected through the Atonement. If that is true, then he could not have been perfect before the process began. If Jesus had been perfect before the atonement began, he would have been incapable of dying. That would have rendered the promise of a resurrection null and void. Let me re-state, Jesus was the only person to live a sinless life. You and I agree on this. On this point you and I agree, however this is the only aspect of Jesus' life that was perfect before his sacrifice was completed. He was subject to both death and the temptation of sin. It was required that he be vulnerable to both in order to qualify himself as the willing sacrifice. I can't think of any other way to express the truth that Jesus was not perfect during his mortal ministry. He was fully innocent of sin, perfectly obedient to the will of the Father, but he was mortal (not perfect) and he was subject to temptation (not perfect).
  7. Yes, I agree with this completely, however perfectly innocent of sin is only one dimension of the perfection he, and all of us, are capable of achieving. I aslo agree with this completely. This is incorrect and contradicts your second statement. If his sacrifice perfected him, then he could not be perfect prior to his sacrifice. The two cannot both be accurate.Yes Jesus was perfectly free from sin. Yes he was perfectly innocent. In this we both agree completely. However, that is not the full measure of perfection we are to seek, even according to Jesus' own words. He did not cite himself as an example of perfection until after his resurrection and visit to the Nephites. You're using 'perfect' as a word to describe his state of innocence, or freedom from sin, when that word applies to so much more. Jesus was mortal. Mortals, by definition are not perfect. Mortals are subject to death. Death is an obstacle to perfection because the spirit and body are separated. Jesus had to be capable of death in order to be sacrificed. Had he been incapable of dying, no sacrifice could be made. Thus by definition, the sacrifice had to be of a perfectly innocent, yet mortal, being. You are correct, however Jesus was not perfect during his moral ministry. As you stated yourself, the process of the atonement is what perfected him. He was perfectly innocent of sin from birth, and the only being to ever to do so. However, he was not fully perfect in the complete sense until after his resurrection and completion of the Atonement.
  8. The bible says Jesus was tempted, so he was tempted. it is not sin to be tempted.
  9. Yes, that is exactly what I'm saying, because he did not need to be perfect in order to accomplish the atonement. He had to be without blemish, without broken bones, and innocent of any sin. That is all. Notice that Jesus never once claimed any measure of glory or perfection of himself until after his resurrection. During his ministry he consistently deferred his authority to that of his Father. He told the Jews "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect." But he told the Nephites, whom he did not visit until after his resurrection "Be ye therefore perfect even as I, or your Father which is in heaven is perfect." in order to be perfect, one has to be incapable of change or alteration. After all, if change or improvement is possible, by definition perfection has not been reached. There is a vast difference between perfection, and perfect innocence. Had Jesus been fully perfected prior to fulfilling the Atonement, he would not have been able to fulfill it. A perfect being cannot die. Death is the separation of the spirit and body. Jesus had to be capable of death, else the sacrifice of an innocent life could not have been made. A perfect being cannot sin. However being free from sin is not indicative of perfection other than perfect innocence. Jesus had to be capable of sin, else Satan's temptations in the desert would have been futile and thus no trial at all. During his mortal ministry, Christ was capable of dying because he was mortal, as we all are. His gift from the Father was that no man could take his life from him without his express consent. The only perfect being, in the full sense of the term, is a resurrected and fully glorified being. During Jesus' ministry, the only being who fit that description was the Father. It was not until after Jesus' resurrection that he also 'had all power in heaven and in earth', and had fully recieved his complete inheritance from the Father, a completely perfect and exalted spirit forever united with a perfected and immortal body.
  10. Jesus was perfectly free from sin while in his mortal life, however that is the only measure of perfection he had before his death and resurrection. He was still capable of sin, thus why Satan tempted him. He was still capable of death, thus why he willingly surrendered his life on the cross for us all. No longer can Jesus be tempted to sin. No longer can Jesus be threatened with death and the grave. He has conquered his two imperfections and rightly claimed exaltation by the hand of his Father. By our understanding of perfection, Jesus was only perfect after he had spoken to Mary, forbidden her to touch him, and then ascended to the presence of Heavenly Father, to present himself as the completed, and necessary, perfect sacrifice to absolve sin from all mankind that would choose to follow Him. To us he was perfectly innocent, or free from the penalties of sin. Yet he was mortal. Mortality is, by definition, a state of imperfection. It is no inaccuracy to say Jesus was not perfect during his life, however we need to be careful because he did live the one and only perfect adult life ever to be lived in this world.
  11. Why is there always someone home when you dial a wrong number?
  12. Why is there braile on drive-up ATM's? Why do books have two title pages? Why can't magazines correctly number their pages? (Reader's Digest was really bad about this years ago) Why do you have to use a mildew remover in a 'well ventilated area'? If it were well ventilated there wouldn't be any mildew.
  13. Why is it women can't seem to know how to put a toilet seat down before using it? Why does the man have to put it down for her?
  14. Let's hear what Christ has said about this; D&C 64:8-11 8 My disciples, in days of old, sought occasion against one another and forgave not one another in their hearts; and for this evil they were afflicted and sorely chastened. 9 Wherefore, I say unto you, that ye ought to forgive one another; for he that forgiveth not his brother his trespasses standeth condemned before the Lord; for there remaineth in him the greater sin. 10 I, the Lord, will forgive whom I will forgive, but of you it is required to forgive all men. 11 And ye ought to say in your hearts—let God judge between me and thee, and reward thee according to thy deeds. Now, realize what is going on at the spiritual level. Forget the social aspects of what is going on for now. a 23 year old adult has offended you and attempted an assault upon you. You stood your ground and kept your calm. You addressed the problem directly without insulting words. The 23 year old adult saw the error of their ways and apologized. Even if this is but temporary, it is enough. Even the apostles that saw Christ's face and heard his voice struggled with this matter of forgivness. At the same time, Christ is unequivocal in the matter. We are required to forgive all men. Nobody can enter the presence of Heavenly Father or Jesus Christ with hatred and resentment in their hearts. Not only will it crush your spiritual sensetivity, it will be a major obstacle between you and your GF. It's time to strive for humility and try to sincerely forgive the woman. None of us here, let alone Christ himself, wants to see you stand condemned before the Lord. It's time to work on letting it go, brother.
  15. So now that the OP's problem has been solved, a thread hijack about bad landlords. I only had one, and he was just lazy. Good guy, just lazy. Three of us had rented half a duplex, and soon after we moved in, a water leak came up that dripped into the basement. It wasn't in our way, but we wanted it fixed. Long story short, it was constantly dripping and the Landlord was constantly saying "I'll get on it in a couple days, if not by next week." This went on for four months. We even agreed to redo the kitchen if we could get a reduced rent, which he agreed to immediately. Still the leak was not fixed. So finally, after one roommate had been the primary contact in all this, I said "Look, I'm gonna get this fixed today." I called the Landlord and asked him *again* to have a plumber come fix the leak. He gave his usual line to me. I replied "Okay, well it's been four months and this duplex has a new kitchen in it. I'm sure you're too busy to address this, so I'll just call a plumber from the phone book and have him bill you, okay?" Then I hung up. Ten minutes later the Landlord's contracted plumber came in, saw the leak in the basement, went up to the bathroom, and cut a six inch by six inch hole next to the toilet. Right there was the leak, a bad pipe. He grabbed it and his thumb went right through it!. Ten minutes later he had a new pipe in place, the hole patched and spackled. Even though we're supposed to be forgiving and all, sometimes you need to push peoples buttons to get them to do the right thing. Oh, and we got our full deposit back when we moved out too. :)
  16. Why do companies wait until three days after I buy their fancy gadget I've been wanting for months to release the next upgrade that will last for the next two years?
  17. wear an open suit (pleated and laces, of course...) at the end of a runway. Have one foot slightly ahead of the other, one hand in your pocket. Then look at the ground about thirty feet ahead of you and smile as though you just remembered a really good joke. Have a 747 scream overhead behind you. It might work...
  18. Sorry, I haven't read the whole thread, but no, obesity is not a choice. It is sometimes the consequence of choices made. Obesity can be brought on by diet, level of physical activity, horomonal changes, medications, metabolism changes, genetics, diseases, glandular conditions, and on and on. Only two of those are easily addressed by most any individual. The rest tend to need a physician's attention and they can get expensive quickly. At the same time, body weight is not a sure indicator of health. Some people are far healthier with additional weight than they would be at 5-8% body fat. Just as you cannot judge one's worthiness before God by looking at church attendance alone, you cannot judge one's health by looking at their weight. Best to simplify it and say 'you cannot judge' :)
  19. Along with the addiction recovery programs available to you, might I gently suggest regular prayer, and especially emergency prayer. God knows exactly what you're going through, and exactly what will be needed to get through it. Turn to him. Lean upon him. He's been there all this time waiting for you to ask for help, and he'll never abandon you. In the moments of the worst withdrawals, call upon him for strength and support. You'll get it, exactly as you need it. This process will demand every bit of your best effort as well. God won't help those who don't do their part. On my mission, a leader said it this way, 'Pray as though it all rests in God's hands, then stand up and act like it all rests in yours.' I've tried this and I can tell you it works. As a recovering addict myself, I promise you it works. God be with you always. :)
  20. Pair of Levi 501's I had in college. I wore the knees out, and the front pockets wore through as well. So I would only wear them with sweats underneath. The knee holes grew to about a foot long on each leg, whereupon one of them got caught on a wheelbarrow handle and ripped straight down to the bottom seam. The backside, oddly enough, was just fine. Various drips and splotches of paint colors on the thighs due to being a theater major and painting scenery in them. Sweats got painted too....they both got thrown out years ago, but they're still the most comfortable pair of pants I've owned yet, and still my favorite.
  21. I've been quite similar with the exception of total solitude. I've never had more than eight or nine close friends at a time, but total isolation is just too quiet and potentially depressing as a long-term status. Of course there are times I want to be alone with my thoughts, to enjoy my own company. I would say it's more than half of my day, typically, that I spend by myself for whatever reason. But on the whole, I do like being a part of a society. Not a major, or even heavily involved part, but in my own place with people I know and trust. Beyond that, the rest of the world can do as it pleases. If you have had a condition professionally diagnosed, I wouldn't advise ignoring it. Our mental health has a real link to our physical health in many ways. No need to become a social butterfly, but a few friends, even on a casual level, will help out greatly.
  22. Isn't grumpy cat a TOS violation by itself?
