Where Are All the White-American NBA Superstars?
askandanswer replied to clbent04's topic in General Discussion
I think I remember watching a documentary about this many years ago. I think it was called White Men Can't Jump. -
I've had a careful look and I think they're all a bunch of American tourists who happened to be in Sydney last week. You can tell by the absence of beer bottles.
-
@pam did you pass the tests?

It seems to be more than just finger wagging https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/latter-day-saint-charities-unicef-covid-19-response

It would seem that with their less than stringent observance of covid related medical advice requiring the temporary lessening of certain social liberties, such as lockdowns, mask wearing and social distancing, some Americans have transformed the old rallying cry of give me liberty or give me death into give me liberty and thereby death. There’s nothing wrong with that, choosing liberty is a valid choice to make. Except when it impacts on the ability of others to make the same choice. Which is what happens when someone dies because someone else has chosen the liberty of not wearing a mask or not following other covid related medical advice.

I think that in purely pragmatic terms, there continues to be some truth in the idea that the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Obviously there are some significant limits as to how far this concept can be extended, but I think it could be a useful starting point. I'm reminded of the useful alliance with the USSR during the second world war.

Please Explain - Pope Reimposed Restrictions on the Latin Mass
askandanswer replied to slamjet's topic in General Discussion
Judging by the degree of division between the traditionalists and the reformists, I'm guessing that perhaps there was a mishap, whereby the massive missive missile misfired and missed its mark, thereby causing much miss ery and misunderstanding between the two groups. -
Praying to change someone's heart vs agency
askandanswer replied to Backroads's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
I suspect that the impact of such a prayer, if acted upon by divine powers, would be, at the most, nothing more than one influence on the subject's decision making process, and not an elmination or overthrow of their agency. Influence on a person's agency is not the same as a nullification of that agency. -

I'm guessing that this information from Rome to the churches abroad was contained in a missive that was mass ive. -

I'm thinking more about us. Is there no point at which we will no longer have to endure or is it effort and struggle forever?
-
So would endure to the end and endure forever have basically the same meanings?
-
The phrase "endure to the end" occurs 18 times in the scriptures, including at least once by Christ in Matthew 10. Today I found myself wondering, what is the end beyond which we no longer have to endure?

Birds apparently “are not real”. Legit news story here.

In Jerusalem, some people thought they could nail a Jew to a cross. The bad news is that some laughed and mocked. The good news is that they succeeded. -
Efficiency is good, but not at Church?
askandanswer replied to NeedleinA's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
Clearly the church is not interested in efficiency, otherwise we would be baptising bags of microfilm. From Elder Christofferson's Sunday afternoon conference address: I once read an article by a poorly informed newspaper reporter who explained that the way we perform baptisms for the dead is to immerse rolls of microfilm in water. Then all those whose names appear on the microfilm are considered baptized. That approach would be efficient, but it ignores the infinite worth of each soul and the critical importance of a personal covenant with God. -
14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. (Old Testament | Isaiah 7:14) Can anyone tell me where and how this prophecy was fulfilled? Apart from prophecies about the birth of Jesus that use the name Immanuel, I haven't been able to find any instances in scripture of Jesus being called Immanuel.

And perhaps, according to His own words, not even Him 18 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God. -
Honoring parents, leave and cleave, and single folk
askandanswer replied to Backroads's topic in General Discussion
Perhaps in circumstances such as this, we can take a legalistic approach and say that such people, by the way they have failed to fulfill their parental responsibilities, should not actually be considered as parents, and therefore do not come under the commandment to be honoured. -
The condition of dependence implies a lack of control over aspects of our existence that are important to us. It suggests that there are things we are unable to do. It suggests limitations. In some cases it might imply subservience, or being subordinate. Used in another context, whatever joy, happiness, peace, etc we might experience in this life or the next is dependent on our obedience to His will.
