One of my unofficial hobbies is talking to people. Not only on the internet but in person. I like to listen and also tell them stories. I like to see their faces light up when they talk about themselves and I like to see the wheels turning when they listen to me share a story or random knowledge. Don't get me wrong, I need breaks too. I normally didn't room with a person I wanted to keep a long friendship with when I was single. EVERYONE gets annoying the longer you stay with them. Now that's not always a done deal. Sometimes it is manageable. Sometimes roommates can become an extension of your family, with the good and bad but with acquaintances it is easier to maintain short bursts of positivity spread out so you associate positive feelings in your mind about them. Just a couple of examples of relationships you can have.
I once got in argument with my mailman. He was mad because I didn't answer my door fast enough (caught him as he was getting back in his mail mobile) he was an old retired military vet. He got all uppity but I stood my ground that could answer the door to whoever I wanted, at the speed I wanted. After that I would make sure to greet him with a smile even though he didn't respond at first. Eventually we became friends as he always delivered my packages. One day he was curious why I always got so much stuff and lucky for him it was jerky! I busted it open and we sat and ate it together. Lol. After that he'd deliver my stuff in lightning speed and if I ordered something shareable (like Utah truffles) he'd get some nice samples. People are priceless! Even more so extraordinary people; keeps hope alive when you run across one.

I like to read History books (if you do what you love, you never have to go to work, you just get paid to play) and I collect all sorts of various journals, diaries, accounts, and other items that are related to historical records.  I also just buy straight up history books and read them as well.  I enjoy reading Church history among other things (though I'm an amateur Church Historian on that accord).
I think most would find it a very boring interest but it's what I love to do.  Everyone has a story, it's just trying to get them to tell it.

If you have never been, it is one of the greatest experiences in music I have ever attended. Once a year Weber State holds a competition called Corp Encore where some of the top groups compete. Salt Lake City even has a group called The Battalion. I almost made the drumline 1 year ago but ended up getting married instead... couldn’t feasibly do or afford both xD

    Interesting conversations on nap time.
I get cranky if I don't get a nap on Sundays!!!

It seems like an excellent way to spend time on the Sabbath if you can do it.
I don't always get a nap on the Sabbath though.
It's a nice thing to be able to get though.

In all seriousness, that sounds like a nightmare. A half hour of this forum...live from your ward every week!
    No thank you.

I traveled through Bologna on may way to and from my first (and also last) town in Italy. Not actually in my mission borders, so I always felt vaguely outlaw. Industrial city, not as beautiful as Florence, but I'm sure very charming in its own way. I never saw anything outside the railway station and immediate vicinity. I do remember one particular part of the station, where a bomb had gone off in 1980 (about three years before I was there). It had been preserved in its post-bombing state as a sort of memorial. I thought it was sad and vaguely ghastly, and thanked the Lord that I lived in a country where we didn't have to memorialize terrorist activities.
Ah, the good old days of innocence...

Oh my goodness. Those asking for four hours of church can have that. I, for one, enjoy having the rest of my Sunday to rest after church meetings and leadership meetings. I used to work all week and then "Saturday is a special day; it's the day we get ready for Sunday" so that only left Sunday as my day to partake of the sacrament, pay my tithes and give my offerings. After that I wanted to go home and rest. I used to go out with the missionaries but I got a bit burnt out. Now I have more time on my hands but still I could only imagine how exhausting it would be having a four hour block. Especially for someone who works a lot and just needs some rest. Sunday is a day or rest where we rest from our labors.

For some kids this may work and for others it may not. With my first daughter, she needed morning naps (usually around 10 am) but has never been able to sleep while people are around. We had 9 am church and spent a lot of time walking the halls trying to keep her calm. She started to adapt to staying up until 12:30 -1:00 pm when we'd get home so she could nap and the time changed to 11-2, once again her nap was disrupted and 11 am is too early to have a nap before (she seemed to do best with 2-3 hour naps). When we again changed to the 1-4 time her usual nap time had shifted to being around 2:30 pm. Sundays and church always interrupted the nap schedule her body naturally preferred. We still went to church, and still tried to let her have naps at other times, it just made for a miserable day once a week. Our second child will just cuddle up and go to sleep for the most part and hasn't been bothered one way or the other by the timing of church. I've heard of plenty of other parents with similar experiences. It's not as much about revolving around the child, which would mean skipping church altogether in favour of napping, but realizing that small children do need certain schedules and don't have the patience or understanding of adults to simply adapt. Three hours is a long time to shift sleep.
I do want to re-emphasize that I support the meeting format as it exists and will support keeping the status quo or changing if that's what the brethren feel is right.

Church is not everyday.  But on Church day, however it works out for your Sabbath worship.  Also, Saturday is preparation for Sunday so the Sunday schedule may need Saturday adjustments as well.
This would be the same if you work odd hours - like my sister who is a nurse working different shifts every week whose husband is a music director - works after normal business hours.  Or any other environmental conditions in your lifestyle.
This is one of the things I learned from our clan tradition.  A child develops best when the child revolves with the family (of course with the developmental necessities of the child worked into the developmental necessities of every other member of that family including grandparents - as our family is traditionally 3-generations in one household) instead of the family revolving around the child.

Small children go 4 hours before needing naps.  Having small children getting their nap interrupted on Sundays simply means you're scheduling Church around your child instead of scheduling your child around Church.
I know you were saying this tongue-in-cheek but I just wanted to say... Singing is a very natural activity for children - even the ones without musical talent.  In the Philippines, music is an inherent part of life especially in the poorest of homes - the lesser resources people have, the more their basic natural inclinations surface, and singing (as it doesn't cost anything) becomes more and more exercised.  Singing to babies (just like Reading to babies) aids in healthy brain development.
My kids - ever since they started primary - would stay in church all day everyday with their primary friends if you let them.

Obviously the church will decrease tithing to 5% and add soda fountains in every building.

So I guess putting some of the meetings back on week nights is out? I've gotta say, going back to Church on Wednesday night would be all kinds of troublesome - it can be hard enough to find a job that let's a person have Sundays off for church, but evenings as well? Not everyone has that luxury. Soon we'll all need to be dentists or work some other job that allows for bankers hours, and not the modern extended bankers hours at that 😜

When Grunt mentioned "Linger Longers" I was reminded of my mission (same general geographical area) and we had them too.  Members lived somewhat far from the building, so we did a potluck after church.  I never heard of it before that, and we don't have them here.  But even here in California, I have a several chapels within a 15 minute drive.

My folks in CA have some pretty fond memories of bringing picnic lunches and basically spending the day together as a ward, since many members lived an hour or more from their church building.

That's funny.  My father was visiting this weekend and came to church with us (he isn't a member).  At one point he leaned over and said "did that guy just say 'third hour?'"  I said "yep, THEN we get to have a linger longer today.  Don't worry, there's food involved."

seashmore got a reaction from Jane_Doe in Should I Ask to be Reassigned? (Temple Worker)
I've been unemployed since June.  I've been a temple worker since August.  I start a new job on Monday.  The schedule for the position I was hired for has me at work until 5 p.m. on Tuesdays.  Our pre-shift meeting starts at 5:10 and it's a twenty minute drive from work to the temple with no traffic.  (Which may add up to ten minutes.)  We have a sister on our shift who, for reasons I'm not aware of, cannot make it to the pre-shift meeting, but can be there in time to help with the sessions.  Our meeting was a little hasty when I mentioned the possible dilemma to my temple president last week, before we closed.  He mentioned a concern that I might feel a little rushed, and that I could/should email him when I knew about the job.
Because of my schedule and the temple's, there is only one other shift that would not require me to not come straight from work.  However, Saturday nights would put more stress on me in the long run since I teach Sunbeams and my main source of social interaction is my writing group on Saturday nights.
I struggle with depression, and it always gets worse in the winter time.  Being a temple worker gives me a concrete sense of divine purpose: I am helping people feel welcome in the Lord's house.  Future me does not want Present me to give that up, but Present me does not see a way to make it work.

Any advice as to what I should say to my temple president in an email about the situation?  I'd like to try it out for a couple of weeks.  I'm also sending an email to my shift coordinator to see what she thinks.

Agree with above. Found that my temple pres would bend over backwards to accommodate temple workers. You are a highly trained resource! So writing group eh? Do tell!

Something she can do to suss out scammers is to ask how they got her number.  She can also ask for a number to call them back because now is not a good time.  A legit place will always have a number to give out while a scam likely won't.
This guy is pretty funny when he deals with scam emails.
