Feeling anger toward Bishop - divorce
MorningStar replied to MIssB's topic in Marriage and Relationship Advice
Chances are, your bishop thought you deserved better than him. -
My great great great grandmother was 15 when she married, had 5 children (including twins) and died when she was 21. She was one of four wives, but my great great great grandfather had two wives at a time. It was shocking to read about her short life and the loss of her twins. I felt sad for her. But then I realize some pretty awesome generations came from her.

I Don't Envy Bishoprics. Or Gospel Doctrine Teachers.

I agree that a teacher can't expect for a lesson to go exactly as planned, but I think it's reasonable to expect that an individual not take up the majority of class time with their comments when other people want to participate too, especially when that person preaches against the church elsewhere. -

I would enjoy teaching Gospel Doctrine just because it would put a fire under my bum and make me study, but then I worry about this kind of thing. I just don't know if I could handle that. My first experiences in GD involved the older brothers arguing with each other and it made me extremely uncomfortable. Not edifying at all. Another teacher would lecture the entire time and wanted no class participation. I love teaching Relief Society though! I only had the chance to sub, but that's one of my dream callings. I love to study the lessons and the sisters are great about sharing without getting too weird. Usually. -

Yes, it would be nice if everyone participated in the lessons instead of pushing their personal agendas. Frustrating. -

Why would it take courage to hold a class outside? -

My father-in-law used to be bishop and he had to do some very uncomfortable things like tap someone on the shoulder and have them sit down when they spoke for way too long during testimony meeting. I would hate to be in that position! You don't want to drive anyone away, but then you want to make sure things go the way they are supposed to for the sake of everyone else. -

They haven't mentioned anything about that, but do say that polygamy was never supposed to stop and that sort of thing. -

This person is not starting a conversation. It's more like a lecture. I don't think Gospel Doctrine is supposed to be about controversy, but about teaching Gospel Doctrine. -

We have a mutual friend and they make comments that are hard to miss. It was shocking to see what they say there and how they present themselves in class. Also, they make comments directly to me when I answer a question. -

What can you do besides ask a person not to attend? Can you really stop them? Tricky situation. They're not coming out and saying anything anti in class, but superfluous and often pointless. His friend also made it clear that this year's curriculum is "disappointing" on FB. -

I'm gathering he was exed for preaching false doctrine or something along those lines because he makes comments about the church's view of "so-called intellectuals". -
It appears our bishopric has a greater presence in Gospel Doctrine lately because of a person who is no longer "technically" a member and is fond of hijacking the lessons a bit or just really likes the sound of his own voice. On Facebook, he makes a lot of snarky remarks against the church, showing his true colors and during the rare times I get to go in class, it's really irritating to witness his ramblings, knowing he doesn't sustain our leaders today. I was telling my husband, "If I were Gospel Doctrine teacher, I'm afraid I would be really rude after a while. 'Anyone? Who wants to answer besides _____?'" Or just flat out pretending I don't see his hand up. Not that he waits to be acknowledged before he speaks. Bishoprics and Gospel Doctrine teachers, I salute you!

Thanks so much!

Thank you so much for the link! I think she needs to learn Jave, C++, and some others. I know she knows SQL and some other things, but I'm quite illiterate when it comes to these things. She has developed web pages, been a project manager, software developer, and more. I was just thinking maybe she should learn how to build apps. :)

Thank you all. It's pretty complicated. The only job she could get was from a friend and she has a 45-60 minute commute just to stay afloat, and she's so exhausted, she doesn't know how she would do school on top of this job. It pays very little and she has been trying hard to hang onto her condo. She was underwater because she took out a loan against it when she had to take 3 month medical leave for major surgery, was immediately laid-off when she came back, and wasn't able to refinance because she had no job. She didn't know how she would rent a place with no job either, so now she has liens against her place because she couldn't afford to pay property tax or condo dues. She has fines for not paying those. After unemployment ran out, she used all of her 401k, had to pay a large penalty for that, she found a miniumum wage job driving for a shuttle company, but the next year when she had her physical, the Dept. of Transportation wouldn't approve her to continue driving because her blood pressure was high. They wanted her to go to the doctor and get an EKG, colonoscopy, and other tests that she couldn't afford because she had no insurance. So she lost that job too. As a single person, it's very hard to qualify for medical care in our state. I did a search and the only program that came up is one that you pay into that has a very long waiting list. I keep hoping that we will be able to buy a place large enough to give her a room to stay in and just focus on going to school if she can get the funding. She's desperate to keep her place, but I don't think she will be able to. She's having a very hard time facing that and I'm sure she's thinking if she does lose it, she will never own a place again. Most likely, she will have to claim bankruptcy because she will still owe after it's foreclosed on. One thing I have learned - if you get a tech job, be sure to keep updating your skills! She used to have an easy time getting a job, so it's a huge shock that she has been underemployed for this long. She used to support her elderly parents.

A friend of mine has been looking for a job in her field for over 6 years now and has even applied to McDonald's , Wal-Mart, etc., but she's told she's "overqualified". Other jobs want her programming skills updated, but at this point she doesn't know how to accomplish that. She's 60, exhausted, has medical problems, and has no family to support her. She hasn't been able to see her parents since 2006. I was reading that sometimes it's wise to "dumb down" your resume, which is a marketing tool for yourself, but you do need to list everything on your application. Have any of you had to do that? Also, what are the best places to Network? Some people say you just have to be on LinkedIn and others say it's awful and spams you to death. Someone asked her last night, "What's wrong with you that no one will give you a job?" She said, "I don't know! Ask them!" I'm getting extremely worried about her future. She has diabetes and both of her parents are blind from it. If that happens to her, I have no idea how she will be taken care of. She isn't on medication because she has no insurance and she is required to have labs taken every three months in order to have her prescriptions filled. She has no money for that.

I'm so sorry to hear it.

So because homosexuals intentionally robbed their children of having a mother and a father, these holidays are supposed to be ruined for heterosexuals? Ridiculous. Why haven't we been so sensitive all this time to children whose mothers died and that sort of thing. Oh no, the children whose parents decided to rent someone's uterus or buy someone's sperm should be catered to more than anyone!

So now we're supposed to take the NSA's word for it that they prevented terror attacks with their PRISM program? Yeah, they're so trustworthy.

Money given to newlyweds is supposed to be to help them get on their feet - not to take a month long vacation. I think it's tacky.

I contacted my reps. Whether it affects me or not, I should fight for other Americans! I'm treating this situation like a cancer - don't let it continue to grow until it's too late.

Nine Internet Firms Giving Data to Government
MorningStar replied to Still_Small_Voice's topic in Current Events
I am absolutely disgusted, especially hearing that soldiers' calls to loved ones were intercepted "accidentally". I say whatever you say publically is fair game, but no one's private communications should be obtained without going through the proper channels! To hear Obama say it is a "modest encroachment on our privacy" was the last straw for me. I signed the WhiteHouse.gov petition demanding he resign. Not that it will lead to anything, but I want him to know how many people are that disgusted with him. -
I think they're becoming more arrogant. Now it's, "Look what we're doing and getting away with. Oh, so and so lied to Congress? I think I'll give them a promotion!"
