  1. Giving money, food, services, etc does nothing to lift the poor out of poverty. In fact the argument can be made that it keeps them there. Whereas something like this, or a mall, or other 'for profit' projects adds jobs to the economy, and those getting the jobs then buy: food, clothes, housing, etc from others which stimulates the economy, which then helps employ others which helps raise others, including the poor who now can find a job or get more hours at the one they already have. You do no one a favor by giving them something for nothing.
  2. That is NOT correct! You have no authority to make that claim. The Brethern do not even make that claim. Please do not tell someone something that is not doctrinal.
  3. Take the kid to the parent at the first sign of trouble - problem solved.
  4. I don't look at Genesis as being a historical or a scientific text. There are many lessons to learn there, however I believe it is not meant to be taken literally YMMV
  5. If you are suicidal, I would recommend counseling no matter where you live or move to. And as Skippy pointed out above there are hotlines to call also. I wish you well.
  6. Been using my phone exclusively for a bit over a year now. Scriptures, SS manuals, Priesthood manuals, hymnal, all on an app. Best thing is that it all fits in my pocket and weighs almost nothing.
  7. I do mainly everyday people put into strange situations, my major sci-fi story so far has had everyone vanishing except small pockets of people. I also have an end of the world type story due to a flu virus Hey praying itself was something I almost never did.
  8. You write sci fi, cool, I do also (see my tag line) along with PAW (End of the World) fiction also. Probably a third of the stories posted there are Science Fiction. anyway I might approach the prayer in a different manner but whats wrong with asking God to help you understand Him?
  9. Have you asked God? I wish we could get away from the 1PM - 4PM meeting schedule we're on our 3rd year of afternoon Church. (there are 2 Wards and 2 branches meeting in our building) that could be overcome.
  10. Thats ok, when I started looking into the Church I didn't even know if God existed.
  11. Is it something major or something minor, can you live with it? There were a number of things I wasn't sure of when I joined, after 20 years there are still a couple things I disagree with, they are not major doctrinal issues though. I usually will ignore it or even get up and walk out of a class if they start discussing the 2 items I am thinking about.
  12. I enjoyed the show, yeah it portrayed the actual LDS people as being uber-controlling but if you ignore that it was ok. We canceled cable when it was in its last season so I never saw the ending, read about it though.
  13. Most religions will, I don't believe the LDS will have much of a problem as we are told in scripture that there are countless worlds.
  14. Just to clarify that is the opposite of LDS beliefs.
  15. Very loose. We have many scientists as members and even teach evolution at BYU. There is nothing that says God could not have used evolution to bring about his goals. About the only place you will get argument on that is that most LDS will say mankind is not an evolved ape - that there is a difference between ape and human. We also believe that the "days" of creation were periods of time perhaps millions/billions of years long, rather than 24 hour days.
  16. This may help you Mormon Newsroom - YouTube There are a number of videos explaining the Church, how it works and what we believe there. A Bishop is the local Church leader that leads the congregation. He is one of the members of the Ward (congregation) that is chosen by revelation, he serves usually for around 5 years along with his two counselors, an executive secretary and a clerk. Usually on the stand during Church you will see the Bishop and his two counselors, the chorister and organist, anyone who is speaking that Sunday and the 2 or 3 men that will bless the Sacrament. In some wards the Ward Clerk or the Executive Secretary will sit up there also, but that's not required. Occasionally you will have visitors that sit up there also, the Stake President for example or a visiting General Authority. The Quorum of the 12 are Apostles as is the First Presidency. They are the leaders of the worldwide Church. Seminary is a daily religious class many LDS High school students go to. In Utah some do it during school hours, outside of Utah its an early morning class. No not all go to it Don't be afraid to ask your missionaries. They're happy to answer.
  17. Its happened a couple times, once about a decade ago we moved into a new ward and were having the 'moving blues'. After a few weeks we got invited to a couple who was around our age home for dinner. We thought Great, we're getting to know people in our new ward - only to be hit with a sales pitch for a diet program - yes we're both a few pounds overweight, but my gosh; You invite us over to dinner and tell us we're too fat!
  18. 1st Nephi 1:1 but tell them to feel free to skip over the Isaiah chapters.
  19. There are LDS singles websites, you're not stuck to your local Singles Ward these days. They've been around almost since the internet started and have a good track record. DW and I met on one.
  20. I have one medication that I usually take in the morning that I need to take with food. Its one that I can postpone to the afternoon and I do, but I know there are others where you must maintain a strict time frame. Some people can not fast, my wife is an insulin dependent diabetic and can not fast as it would throw off her entire insulin/blood sugar cycle. She still manages to maintain the Spirit of the Fast meaning to keep a reverent attitude.
  21. As you said, they are not counselors, I would probably give them a general idea that there has been abuse problems in the past with your husband/boyfriend, and you will be moving in with your Dad. That due to that you are struggling with your faith right now. More than the above really isn't needed as far as their teaching you about the LDS. I would add that you need to keep in mind that you are a Child of God and worthy of His attention and His help and also of respect.
  22. There are LDS dating websites, that's how my wife and I met and we lived 1000 miles apart at the time. You're not limited to your local Singles Ward these days.
  23. I could care less who looks at my profile - what possible difference does it make? I imagine that its in relation to something I/you posted and they're wanting to get a bit of background on me/you. You can bet that everyone will go to your profile after reading your post.
  24. Unless I am coming straight from Church I never wear a White Shirt - but then frankly I despise white shirts, and if it were not the 'unofficial uniform' for males at Church I wouldn't even own one. YMMV Its Business Casual for me: Dress Pants, clean pressed dress shirt, no tie. Which is also the dress code where I work at. As for what to study, etc. Let your companion take the lead, and also talk with him about it.
  25. There are many good people in all religions and even in no religions at all. You would need to have a long honest discussion about raising children concerning religion, and also how religion will work as a couple before you make a commitment. Also you will need to decide if you are ok with out ever having a Temple marriage or a Priesthood holder in your home. You can not count on his ever converting.
