  1. Sorry to bump this up to the top...just thought you'd be interested to see what people on another website think of the article in question...some interesting views there too... http://www.bagism.com/webboard/msg/2080.html
  2. Thanks Please...yes I'm very familiar with both authors' names, but just haven't got round to trying any of their books yet...and yes, I'm sure my library will stock plenty of them. Thanks for the recommended titles!
  3. My reasons are similar to Maureen's too, in that I nearly became a member, and attended for 5 years. I've always had a strong interest in religions and rituals etc. so I like to explore message boards and other websites that are religious based. I do enjoy a good debate too...although I don't feel that I can contribute very well...I'm not well read enough to supply some of the great answers that others do on here...(apologies for coming over as dumb sometimes!) but I do enjoy reading others' opinions, checking the references that they supply, and generally seeing if anything is thought provoking for me...
  4. Hey Pushka, have you read any of John Grisham? or Robin Cook? ← You know, I haven't yet..but there's time...can you suggest any titles?
  5. I really don't want to give in to the 'the way you dress is important' argument that Ray is presenting, however I am willing to support him a little as I know that this is a big issue with you folks... So, I would suggest that rather than speaking to individuals, the Presidents of each of the classes, PH, RS, YW etc. hold a meeting with the Bishop who instructs all of them about teaching respect in all ways when in church, including dress codes, and instructs them to tell their classes about how people can consult with him if they need any help in any of these areas... A compromise I suppose...I still don't feel it is that important myself, but maybe it may make one or two people feel better if they are no longer being treated unkindly by others because of their dress code...I feel a message in toleration and not being judgemental would also be appropriate for all members!

  7. Winnie...I don't know what happened to me yesterday, but I missed all of your posts about your experiences with the people who judged you when you were bringing up your children alone. I am very sorry that you had to go through those experiences...from all of your posts I get the feeling that you are a very resilient, yet sensitive and caring person, and you deserve much respect.
  8. Awww...poor you Traveller...hope you have better luck choosing this time round!
  9. SF, I agree with you on the dress code business...Please, I agree with you too, and Soulsearcher! I understand, and I believe all those attending your church whether dressed, in your opinion, appropriately enough, understand the general wish to be respective of the general dress code of the places we visit...for instance in Greek Monastries tourists..women, are encouraged to cover their shoulders out of respect, however I don't think that people should be judged by anyone else because they do not, or cannot follow the dress code strictly...as Soulsearcher and the other posters have noted, it is not our outward appearance that matters, but what is in our hearts...
  10. Phew! I'm so pleased to hear that...some of those sentiments were so disgusting!!
  11. Okay Snow...I'm willing to accept your knowledge at this point, as you do know more than I do about the situation...
  12. Thanks for that reassuring article..
  13. You're welcome, Soulseeker
  14. Unlikely to occur in the UK where guns are not so easily obtainable...but I do see the point you are trying to make. Over here you would be charged with murder for doing that, because you were not using reasonable force for self defence.
  15. I was referring to the Organ Donation in this instance, as I think one or two people tried to outline the Lds views on sperm/egg donation.
  16. Thank you for that Shanstress. I cannot give an opinion as to why people were mugged/raped in N.O. there are people of all walks of life who are capable of taking advantage of people in strange situations such as these. It is not a class issue in my opinion. I do not know why the volunteers who offered to help people were treated as they were...again, people of all walks of life display nasty traits at times, again this is not a class issue in my opinion. I feel that allowing the criminals to roam the streets was asking for trouble...has anybody said how many robbers and rapists/thugs were amongst these? Why were they not taken to other secure units? My objection to this article is only on the issue of the generalisations to which Shanstress has referred...I acknowledge that the types of behaviour displayed are disgraceful...I admit that I cannot give my own reasons for why they occurred. I can understand that perhaps some of the looting occurred because the people who were too poor to own the goods previously felt resentful of their circumstances, which might have been caused by a poor educational system that they were subject to? Perhaps there were other reasons too...also, I do not criticise those people who looted for food/water/diapers etc. as those are for real need...not greed. I just want to make my point that to be in receipt of welfare does not automatically make one a thug/robber/rapist, and definitely does not make one a parasite...and please consider why so many are on welfare? could it be due to the economics of the US, and the job situation there?

    Two Groups

    Unfortunate, but true...
  18. Soulsearcher, I sympathise with the troubles that you and your LDS friend went through at that time when she was ill. I agree fully with your opinion of the R.S. women who visited but passed judgement and pressured your friend into feeling uncomfortable with you staying there. Daizymae, I agree that for one member to devote 3 days to this lady's plight might have been difficult, but surely under the circumstances the sisters could have worked out some sort of rota for 24 hours cover for such a short period?
  19. I agree with you too, Wolfjingles, in this respect..

    Two Groups

Hopefully we all wish to be in the first group..and do not think about taking the credit.
  21. Do you hold this same view over donating organs from the deceased to others who need them? Is this the view of the LDS church in general too? Just curious to know.
  22. Thank you Please...I have searched further and found articles which state the opposite of the above, however I really feel this is an issue which is so deep and now emeshed in politics that nobody is likely to solve it to the satisfaction of all parties involved, which is very, very sad...all that continuing destruction over a piece of land!
  23. I wasn't actually stating that anybody had said the LDS were the only people prepared to help, I was referring to the mindset that the LDS were likely the only people prepared for such a disaster occurring...to themselves. Okay, I admit that my comment was dismissive of the Bible and BofM...I still stand by my opinion however, that seeing the reasons behind these disasters in terms of the righteousness or evilness of the people in those areas as being supersticious nonsense...sorry if this offends you.
  24. I'm sorry but this story stinks in its portrayal of people on welfare as parasites who have no feelings about the properties they live in and the goods that they own...it is terribly discriminating! It is sad to hear that the criminals were just released from the prisons, and allowed to roam through N.Orleans...I would have thought that the authorities would at least have dealt with them in a more sensible manner...
