So wait then MOE - until that all happens, are you saying that electric cars are a horrible thing that should not become more popular?
-
I lost track - we currently run our cars on gas. Electric cars still run mostly on coal (since that's the primary way the US delivers electricity to the plug). Are we still thinking clean coal technology is preferable to oil, especially foreign oil?

I would absolutely love to see a breakthrough in energy storage in my lifetime. Improve the battery technology enough, and suddenly electric cars, windmills, and solar power get a lot more attractive. Engineery-type folks who know what they're talking about seem to say it's a pipe dream. But I'd love to see it nonetheless.

That's a hard story to hear - sorry it's going on. But at the end of the day, you can only control you. She'll either leave you or not, will either cheat on you or not, will work on the marriage or not. If she'll agree to work on the marriage with you, I suggest counseling. I'm guessing that figuring this out would be key. If she'll agree to work on the marriage, I'd start here. With you working on you. She's yearning for something she says she doesn't see from you. Figure out what that is.An alternative would be to dig in about how you've right and she's wrong. That would seem to be less likely to preserve your marriage.

You mean find above-board ways, with no sneaking, right? I think that's good advice.

Here's what I learned today that helped me be cooler.

Yes, well. Looking for the definition of such a complex and nuanced term as irony in the dictionary are we? Isn't that sort of like, well... (Where's the smarmy smug self-satisfied icon when you need it?) -

Lyrical irony. Remember, you heard the term here first. -

Oy. No. People! Let me try again to help spread the coolness. Calling something something, when it really isn't something, is NOT an example of irony! It's just an example of being wrong about something. Or trying and failing. Or being ignorant of a word's defnition. (And NO, none of those are examples of irony either.) Greatness loses something when you have to explain it, but here goes: It's possible that some cultures and people just struggle to understand and identify irony. Maybe they're like conspiracy theorists, where they see irony everywhere, when there really isn't that much out there to be seen. Here's irony: LM starts a thread on what makes him cooler, only to lose his cool by getting all hot under the collar arguing about the definition of a word. -

This week's installment of "what I learned today that helped me be cooler": If you're like me, you're still ticked off at the Alanis Morrisette song . Because it's such a good song, made by such a talented singer. But even though the song is all about ironic situations, Alanis totally fails to give a single good example of irony. You want to like it, but the fatal disconnect between what she's trying to sing about, and what ends up getting sung about, is just too much for you. This state of affairs is more an example of dumbness produced by the music industry, than it is an example of irony.Anyway, you've been able to stay ticked off for the last 18 years. Yes, it came out in 1995. And yes, 1995 really was 18 years ago. I can't help you there. But I can help you with this: This girl is still growing into her talents, and her remix isn't as professionally done. But for the love of pete, it's nice to finally hear real examples of real irony in the song. Now you know, and you are also now cooler. -
No camping experience, but I have had interesting experiences flying with a firearm. Flying out of Denver a few years after 9/11, it was the best way to go. I declared a firearm, and they said 'come with me', and took me past all the long lines and waiting, to get special 1:1 treatment with a team of experienced and proficient workers, all very intent on me. They didn't want to see the gun, our bags went into a machine the size of a small school bus, where I wouldn't be surprised if they could scan the dna left on the trigger. Everyone was polite and efiicient, and we were through in about 2 minutes. Coming back from Memphis, however, was a different story. They asked to see the gun, and asked if they could fire a few rounds into the ceiling to check the grouping*, that was about it. (I've flown out of Denver in recent years, no more special treatment. I was just another boring ticket and bag to the check-in person. In fact, the guy in line in front of me had a firearm too.) * This part didn't really happen.

The other thing to know about public chatrooms, is they tend to attract the dregs of society. A big chunk of the people who set up sex with minors, do it in chatrooms. Political and religious discussions are the most horrible and the least productive. Ignorance and evil often run amok. You get to talk to people in real time, anonymously, with few or no rules. There are good chatrooms with clean talk and good times. LDS.net used to have one of them - until the mods realized how much dang time it took to police it and keep it that way.

Conference reports

I love that Elder Richards qualified his answer by making it clearly understood that he was expressing his opinion. I get to disagree with him all I want. Many of our critics won't give such plain and simple explanations the weight they deserve. Whenever I encounter one, I am looking at someone who claims to value truth, yet really are just out to spread their concluded agenda. I also like something I heard a Catholic say about their leaders: -
From Yahoo News How sad that the media has been unable to drum up riots and mayhem to continue their news cycle. No really - why does anyone still watch mainstream media for anything? Look at y'all - arguing over whether people think hispanics can be portuguese can be racist, and whether Ann Coulter rubs people the wrong way or not, and other such irrelevant nonsense. Cast off your chains of horrible news reporting. You're all smarter than this.

My question is are you equally critical of the plethora of shrill, venomous voices that are adored by the left?I thought bytor had a good question, and I'd like to urge Praetorian_Brow to answer.

Ugh. Tragedy television - I can only stomach so much of it. Like in 5 minute bursts, once every few months. It just reminds me too much of the 'tattle-tale' mentality from elementary school. Breaking news! Bobby just said that Jimmy's mom is ugly! I got it on camera! This case impacts my life, only to the extent that I get a little insight into what life is like for the person who uses his conceal carry gun. "Is it worth becoming the next Zimmerman?" is a good question to ask myself if I'm ever in a situation where I might feel the need to pull my weapon. It reinforces my overall philosophy of "95 ways to run the heck the other way, 5 ways to defend myself".

Nope. I put them together according to a process I call 'what's on sale, what I can scrounge, and what my kids usually end up needing'.

Hi and welcome Poetic!

[Mod note - I moved this to the Preparadness forum.] Good deal Etsitty. I keep 1st aid kits in our cars, bathroom, 72 hr emergency kit, and carry a small one around with me. It is horrible and frustrating going through them every year and replacing all the expired stuff. (God bless gauze - it lasts forever.)

Do you have a link to that story, PC?

Is there a "Help The Traveler obtain his particle accelerator" fund? If so, I'm in for five bucks.

Hi and welcome Valerie! My father was pretty vocal about his disdain towards Mormons, and religion in general. It took a while to learn to deal with it, but in the end, I could see that he loved me, wanted what was best for me, and most importantly, was willing to accept the path I chose for myself. He always kept his antireligious thoughts and beliefs to his dying day, but it stopped being a sore spot between us. We accepted each other's stand on things, and moved on. When someone you love pokes fun at you, there's a reason for it. Do they love you and worry you're making a mistake? Are they just jerks who mock what they don't understand? Hopefully, your friends and family are closer to the first end of the spectrum.

Anddenex, I did not mean to sound like I was insulting you. As I said, I've found most of your posts rational, and as I said, I'm a little taken aback that you hold this opinions. I find your particular opinion about this subject goofy and odd - otherwise I think you're a heck of a guy. Whenever I find myself arguing the definition of words, and I find myself relying on the 3rd or later entry at dictionary.com, I'll often force myself to reevaluate my correctness. I'd urge you to do the same. Other than invite you to read up on Posse Comitatus Act, the definition of Police, the differences between civil authority and military command, and Hamilton's Federalist Paper #19 (which discusses soldiers and police), all of which have formed the basis of my opinion, I guess there's nothing else I can do besides ask you for your sources. Besides dictionary definition 3, is there any other reason you believe police are soldiers?

I've had to readjust my internal chronometer in the past few years: It's no longer a homosexual activist this-or-that, it's a same-sex/GLBT rights supporter this-or-that. The folks calling for these boycotts (and advocating for this stuff in general) come from all orientations now. The social shaming pendulum has swung. 5 years ago, I was defending laws which protected business owners who refused service. Today, I'm arguing against laws which prosecute the florist in New York for refusing to do business with the gay couple. The oppressed minority are becoming the oppressors. Remember when the gay rights supporter folk kept claiming all they wanted was for folks to live their lives in peace and not be bothered? That was 5 years ago. Now it's about crushing the opposition through legislation, education, and activism.

Oh, absolutely it's a serious issue, worth serious consideration. It's just not a 3rd amendment issue, any more than it is an issue on how the Netherlands treat it's migrant Gypsy population. Unless, of course, by "the Netherlands" we mean "Henderson, Nevada Police", and by "migrant Gypsy population" we mean "private citizens in their homes", and by "3rd amendment" we mean "4th amendment". Then it's absolutely a 3rd amendment issue.
