Word of Wisdom and marijuana. Very serious.

I will be coming to this thead Monday morning, very much looking forward to your report Funky. -
That's a shame. Counseling works best when both sides are willing to accept and validate and own legitimate criticism from the other. So anyway, the horrible difficult honest truth here: there's not much you can do about his faults, there's only what you can do about your faults. For example - if he were here telling his side of the story, how would he characterize your reaction to his complaints about you in counseling? Which of his complaints about your faults did you accept and validate and own? (Please don't get me wrong - I'm not validating his infidelity. I'm not blaming it on you. I'm only pointing out that there's only one person you can control and change here, and it isn't him.)

Ditto for Netflix. You learn very quickly that just because it was a TV show, doesn't mean you want to be within a mile of it. -
Questions about the Spirit World and beyond.

From the Gospel Principles manual: -
I just knew I had a twin sibling out there somewhere! Honestly, Anachron, you're in good company. If I had my way, I'd get 98% of my interaction with non-nuclear-family humans via my keyboard, with the other 2% being accidentally running into people in the store.I can help you out. There are commandments/covenants, and then there are cultural expectations. The first (like 'gather together oft' and 'bear one another's burdens') we should strive to do to the best of our ability. So Sunday church attendence, filling your calling, and finding ways to help folk are "thou shalts". But the second thing - cultural expectations of our fellow mormons - are not a mandate. Yes, mormons just naturally pressure people to be chatty and perky (I love how you put it). Someone wanting you to do something, doesn't naturally mean you need to do it. My ward has accepted me and my family. My wife has many friends to talk to. Our kids are loved and accepted and included. And I'm accepted as the introverted guy who sits in the corner and isn't that great in conversations. It took a little work to get them to know me. I had to give a sacrament meeting talk where I thanked everyone for accepting me and my reclusive ways. I had to thank several people profusely for inviting me places, but politely declining. And I had to show everyone that I was active, by going to meetings, contributing to lessons, accepting and magnifying callings, and helping folk when I could. That last sentence is key - so many mormons interpret quietness as "Ohmygosh - that person is losing their testimony! Time to activate the mormon love tsunami!" People don't get that notion when you're giving a sunday school lesson, even when you duck out of church right after, because they'll know you'll be back next week. Anyway, if none of that works for you, there's always the three simple words "I am gay". But even that works less and less every year.

Christian Bale: Not just a hero on the screen
NeuroTypical replied to RipplecutBuddha's topic in Current Events
My wife has a few encounters with pure evil under her belt. She has emerged from these encounters relatively whole, but scarred in various ways. She has been to more funerals in high school than I've been to in my entire life. She says she recognizes the evil in the shooter, and I believe her. One thing she is adamant about - we must not give evil whatever it desires. The shooter has expressed his desire to be thought of as a supervillain. He identified himself as the joker to police. My wife proposes that we must act to keep the shooter from getting what he wants. She proposes we think about him as Sideshow Bob - the tormented sidekick from The Simpsons who also really wanted to be taken seriously as a supervillain: Whenever I think of the theater shooter, I will think of Sideshow Bob. -

Done, but I'm not finding what you say is there. The first results are to scholarly articles that use lots of big words and cite other articles. A brief scan didn't produce any support for your claim that we have receptors that bind to absolutely nothing besides THC, which only occurs naturally in MJ. It is possible that I just don't understand the big words, and need you to cut and paste.Next result was a link to 'druglibrary.org' aka the "Shaffer Library on Drug policy". The first thing I noticed was the immediate banner ads advertising rehab clinics and offering "Own your ow legal marijuana business", and a way to obtain "Your guide to making money in the multi-billion dollar marijuana industry". The article talked about the state of attempts to legalize MJ, and then delved into receptors and THC research. I find no support for your claim. Next up was a forum post on the "Tokers Q&A" forum of grasscity.com. I didn't click. Next was this imgur photo: Next was a link to the "gangavibes.wordpress.com" site. The rest of the results were a mixture of more journals, or links to books you can buy written on the subject. I'm gonna need a little help here. You claim we have receptors that bind to absolutely nothing besides THC, which only occurs naturally in MJ. Your opinions seem to rely heavily on this claim. I need your source. -

I know next to nothing about biopharmacology. I need the anonymous guy on the internet to provide a link to his source. Citing your sources is so well established in forums where people argue with each other that it should not even need to be requested, and to fail to openly provide one is usually tantamount to proof that someone doesn't know what the heck they're talking about, although it can also be due to someone not knowing proper internet ettiquette. I understand the concept. You are saying we have receptors in our bodies that bind to absolutely nothing besides THC, which only occurs naturally in MJ. You'll just have to note that I continue to be uneducated in the matter, and I restate my request for your source. If you were able to figure out the quote function with help, the hyperlink function isn't much different.Call for source. It ain't that hard. -

Great idea...I have, and he agrees. Are you expecting us to believe that you went up to your bishop and said "Hey bishop - I believe smoking weed brings me closer to God, so I'm gonna go toke up and head for the temple - you got a problem with that?" and he said something like "No way man, try the michuacan blend - it's heavenly!"Sorry - I'm not really willing to accept that at face value. -

Yes. I really got a huge kick out of the first season(s) of Torchwood. Loved it. Then they turned it into the "Jack is gay and let's make a show about how we're ok with his love life" show. Not really what I wanted to see. I don't care if he's gay or not, but it would be nice if he'd focus on saving earth instead of walking around bragging about his exploits like a hormone-crazed sarcastic BYU student heading for excommunication. -

Dreams rock. And the dreams that give deep insight and heightened knowledge rock too. But the dreams that rock the most, are ones where you come back an hour later to revisit your deep insights and heightened knowledge, and it doesn't sound totally stupid like "The entire universe is suffused with the aroma of turpentine" or some such. Unfortunately, I have a lot of those.

Is your husband an elder or a high priest? Your husband should take up the matter with his EQP or HPGL. Sounds like a very frustrating story. Hard to not judge, but that's probably where you should focus your efforts. Are you able to love this alcoholic slacker as thyself? Do you respect that he is a son of God, and do you see his position as heir to a divine birthright? If not, that's certainly the place you should focus your energies.

Vort is right. Whatever it is you're trying to defend, doing it through a false dichotomy isn't working. -
Hi Seeking! Welcome.

Well, the whole situation makes me sort of nauseous, but a few more facts might help you avoid some of the nausea. Fact: Bullet proof armor does not, in fact, make you Bullet Proof. Yesterday on the radio, a guy who had been a US marshall and had been shot in his bullet proof vest, called in to speak on this specific point. You might not kill a guy wearing body armor by shooting him, but it hurts like heck, you can knock him down by shooting him, and multiple hits can degrade the armor's effectiveness. Remember - the correct intent is not to shoot to kill, you shoot to stop. Please understand - I am not saying people should have returned fire in a crowded theater. That could have been effective, or it could have killed more people. I don't know - I wasn't there. All I'm doing is pointing out what bullet proof vests are. I'm rather partial to the Dept. of Homeland Security's guidelines on active shooter situations: Run. If you can't run, hide. If you can't hide, fight. If you must fight, do whatever is necessary to stop the threat. I like that - my wife and I are training our kids like this. We add another step up front - don't be in a dangerous situation in the first place. Such interesting words, "Letting" and "Allowing". We add them into our sentences, sometimes totally blind to the fact that we're lying to ourselves about our ability to "let" and "allow". Those darn lawbreakers - always breaking laws. Always doing things they're not allowed to do. Thinking they can do things we don't let them do.Your "better ideas" include metal detectors and armed guards, Anne. We haven't really figured out anything better, that doesn't infringe on our rights. (Besides, of course, raising up righteous children in good families with proper morals and character, and succeeding at missionary efforts so we can live like the Nephites after Christ came.)

Hmm...From where I'm standing, that statement is equally true no matter what demographic group we use instead of "those who have mental illness"... Yeah, not a very useful thing to think, in my opinion. I wonder if it might be a good idea to brush up on some basics: Myths about Mental Illness By Elder Alexander B. Morrison Of the Seventy

Is smoking marijuana viewed as a sin?
NeuroTypical replied to SkinnersPinners's topic in General Discussion
Good luck to you Skinners. How old are you, btw? -
Hi Toby, I remember when I came back to the church after 6 years. I absolutely went and talked to the Bishop, telling him my exact situation, letting him know what I needed and what I didn't need, what I was ready for and not ready for. He was very receptive and grateful to hear everything I had to say. I recommend going and seeing him, telling him everything you've told us, and getting the answers to your questions from him.

Is smoking marijuana viewed as a sin?
NeuroTypical replied to SkinnersPinners's topic in General Discussion
Hi Skinners, kudos for being concerned about sin. How bad of a sin? I'm not exactly sure. What are the laws in your state? Are you obtaining it legally or illegally? Where do you get your weed? Do you personally know the local grower who has a small operation and a few select clients like yourself? Big difference between that guy, and stuff coming through Mexico, grown and shipped by organizations also involved in kidnapping, extortion, murder, and child prostitution and slavery. Hopefully you do business with the first guy. If you buy from the guys who ship product across the border in the body cavity of a kidnapped 13 yr old girl, you might be sinning a bit more for your increased spirituality and artificially-induced sense of well-being, don't you think? -
Extinguishing the light of Christ.
NeuroTypical replied to The_Warrior's topic in General Discussion
Moroni 7:16 For behold, the Spirit of Christ is given to every man, that he may know good from evil; wherefore, I show unto you the way to judge; for every thing which inviteth to do good, and to persuade to believe in Christ, is sent forth by the power and gift of Christ; wherefore ye may know with a perfect knowledge it is of God. It seems to me that one of Satan's greatest successes, is getting someone to hate themselves so much that they believe themself to be an enemy of God. There are people who are totally convinced that "It's too late for me", or "God's rules about love and repentance apply to everyone else - not me". It's not that the Spirit of Christ leaves them, they are just so filled with self-loathing that they ignore or shout over it. Mental illness can tempt or exert influence. It can also remove agency, making someone not responsible for their actions. It is often hard for us humans to tell the difference.- 12 replies
