Cnn.com - U.S., China lead way in tapping wind power

Interesting article about how the US and China both are investing heavily in wind power.

A power generation consortium in Texas is planning to spend $5 billion on windfarms that should power 4 million homes by 2012.

Texas windfarms currently power around a million homes.

Billionaire oilman T. Boone Pickens is planning another farm in Texas, that should power another 1.3 million homes.

China is catching up, and may pass the US in total power generation one of these decades.

I have noticed at least two wind mills on the south side of the point of the mountain. (Utah, USA)

There are windmills at the military fort at the point of the mountain, and there are some windmills at the mouth of Spanish Fork Canyon.

You know you can spend a small amount and have your own wind/solar power generators. Don't need to wait for a corporation to become eco friendly and you can be self sufficient powerwise.

and you don't have to pay a power bill. check out a grid tie system and then the power companies pay YOU!!!!

From the snoring or the speaking or both? ;)

The last time I checked, a decent home-sized windmill went for more than $5,000 - in the same ballpark for a hefty solar setup. Not quite a small amount. Plus, the wind has to be blowing (or the sun shining) to generate power.

I'm certainly waiting the day when it truly does only take a "small amount", and I'll be all over it.

Sounds close. Did he have a faithful companion named Sancho and perhaps a thing for a lady named Dulcinea?

Let me go ask him. Oh, wait. I can't. He's dead. I'll ask my mom. She's the one who made the recent discovery about the way he died. I shouldn't have laughed when she told me, but it sounded made up.

About the oil guy making the wind farms or whatever you call them, it sounds pretty cool, but some people think he's just trying to get rich. Uh, if it gets us lower power costs, what do I care? I remember when my electric bill was $75 or less in the summer. Now it's $130.

Calgary's train transit system runs exclusively on wind power. There are quite a few wind farms in Southern Alberta as there are always strong winds down there. There are more going up every year it seems. Unfortunately the cost for these wind farms is expensive, so there are a lot of up front costs. Once the technology gets better and cheaper the cost of electricity might come down a bit.

My power bill is still around 60 bucks a month.

The big jump at the start of '07 is due to us using more power. The rest is just increased prices for the same power use.

turn your computer off once in awhile and maybe, maybe....it might be a little cheaper......:D:D

You would love that wouldn't you? :P

Just for the record, while wind power seems like a perfect solution, there is potential for large windfarms to alter local climates. I'm not sure what the details of this are, but just thought I'd point out it isn't a pure environmental-friendly solution (although a big step up).
