TheyCallMeMom Posted December 9, 2008 Report Posted December 9, 2008 My mother informed me several months ago that my food storage was selfish.. I was hoarding.. I tried to explain to her the purpose.. It was like talking to a wall.. has anyone else been met with these types of comments from others and how do you relay the importance to them Quote
Hemidakota Posted December 9, 2008 Report Posted December 9, 2008 All the time....until they come knocking in moment of a crisis. :) Quote
chitchat Posted December 9, 2008 Report Posted December 9, 2008 Nicole, you might consider showing her this:Ready.gov - Prepare. Plan. Stay Informed. Quote
RachelleDrew Posted December 9, 2008 Report Posted December 9, 2008 I could understand how some people could call it silly. But selfish? What is her reasoning for that? For the record, every non-lds that i've met who has seen our food storage thinks it's a smart idea. A little overzealous perhaps, but smart nonetheless. Quote
chitchat Posted December 9, 2008 Report Posted December 9, 2008 Nicole, does she have concern for her grandchildren? Quote
rameumptom Posted December 9, 2008 Report Posted December 9, 2008 I suggest turning the tables on her. Check out what she owns and eats for meals. Then ask her why is she "hoarding" nice things, when she could have used the money she bought them with to feed needy children in Africa, etc? Mention to her that you give over 10% of your money to charity. Yes, much of it to the LDS Church, but then you can explain the bishop's storehouse and the many charitable efforts the Church does throughout the world, esp during disasters. Then, you can explain that your food storage is to ensure you never have to be in such a situation as many are that lose everything (job loss, financial disaster, etc). Quote
BenRaines Posted December 9, 2008 Report Posted December 9, 2008 Never heard that before. Always been admired for planning ahead. Ben Raines Quote
Misshalfway Posted December 9, 2008 Report Posted December 9, 2008 Does she feel the same way about your savings account or 410K? Quote
Wingnut Posted December 9, 2008 Report Posted December 9, 2008 Does she feel the same way about your savings account or 410K?Does that have a higher interest rate than a 401K? Seriously, though...selfish? Wow...never heard that about food storage. Quote
mirja99 Posted December 9, 2008 Report Posted December 9, 2008 My mom sometimes finds it funny that I have a lot of basics (rice, oats etc.) in my cuppord. My food storage is not that big yet so I wonder what she will say in couple of years... Personally I feel more secure that I have these items safe at home and I try to get better 3 month storage before going any further. Quote

EVERYONE has *something* that they "hoard", even if it's canned pie filling....Way to go!Bruce Quote
Aesa Posted December 10, 2008 Report Posted December 10, 2008 Your food storage can be used for more than yourself. To give a meal to those who perhaps had never thought about being prepared. Quote
gabelpa Posted December 10, 2008 Report Posted December 10, 2008 Selfish.. I think that's a cracking description. I'm being selfish with my money because I'm not giving it all to every business and beggar in the area. I'm being selfish with my time because I don't spend every hour of every day helping the poor and the needy. I kinda need money, sleep, and I done got myself a family who would miss me. I'm being selfish with my house because I don't let anyone off the street sleep in my front room with a dozen of his closest friends. I'm being selfish with my food storage because I want to be able to feed my family if I lose my job or other bad things happen. Now what else can I be selfish with.... Quote

amightyfortress Posted January 12, 2009 Report Posted January 12, 2009 Are the store shelves in your area empty? Are people all around you starving to death? If not, then it's not hoarding. Hoarding is when you rush out and buy up stuff and leave others to do without. If there's plenty of food still on the shelves for others to eat, then it's not hoarding. Quote

If there's plenty of food still on the shelves for others to eat, then it's not hoarding.I'm pretty sure the fascist government will consider *any* food storage or preparations as "hoarding". Marxists want everyone (except the privileged class) "equal", so whatever food preps you made will be confiscated "for the common good" (or redistributed to the elites' pantries). If any readers voted for Obama, I hope they repent... The "change" that's coming will not be good for our Republic. Quote
Hemidakota Posted January 13, 2009 Report Posted January 13, 2009 Just keep hoarding your food. It will come of use soon. Quote

NeuroTypical Posted January 13, 2009 Report Posted January 13, 2009 has anyone else been met with these types of comments from others and how do you relay the importance to themBy "these types of comments", I'll assume you mean "silly comments from ignorant people acting like ninnies". Yes, I encounter them all the time, although not on the topic of food storage. Dealing with someone acting like a ninny doesn't always involve figuring out how to convince them you're right. We're told how to deal with such people in 1 Corinthians 13:4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, 5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; 6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; 7 Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.Sometimes, I wish I didn't have 1 Cor. to give me my marching orders. I'd much rather deal with such folks by slapping them in the face. But God says I need to be charitable.LM Quote
minuet Posted January 15, 2009 Report Posted January 15, 2009 I've heard it explained that hoarding is when supplies are in short supply and someone purchases mass amounts that prevents others from getting any. Buying in bulk when supplies are in good supply (like they are now) is just simply that: buying in bulk. In older days those with gardens bottled the produce from their gardens and fruit trees. Since they had scores of bottled food in their root cellar would that be considered hoarding? Certainly not! It was just what you did to assure you had food through the winter. The best thing we can do is to get our friends, family and neighbors to start buying in bulk. Then none of us go hungry. Quote
Guest Alana Posted January 15, 2009 Report Posted January 15, 2009 Well, I'm sure you took that food out of the mouth of starving children. It's just a different mind set. It's like when my neighbor said that 5 lbs of flour and sugar would last her 6 months. I don't think we were talking about the same thing. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go rob from the poor to give to the rich (me) HAH! Quote
GlockGirl Posted February 25, 2009 Report Posted February 25, 2009 My mother informed me several months ago that my food storage was selfish.. I was hoarding.. I tried to explain to her the purpose.. It was like talking to a wall.. has anyone else been met with these types of comments from others and how do you relay the importance to themYes, I've been called selfish and many, many other things. Selfish, because I stopped allowing family members to “borrow” away my stock because they were broke (they are always broke) and needed diapers or foods or other such things that they never resupplied. Selfish, because I wouldn’t loan a family member $2000 to file for Bankruptcy, even though I “have the money to help them out”. Selfish, because I don’t feel bad for people that make stupid decisions in their life and it ends up costing them; I only pay for my own mistakes, they have to pay for theirs.Selfish and “heartless”, because my only concerns are for the welfare of myself, my husband and our child and not for every bum on the street or people that breed indiscriminately and then expect us to pay their way.It used to bother me when I would hear things like that, but then I looked at our life and then at theirs and I realized why they said those things. Some people either can’t or won’t, do for themselves and they resent those of us that can and will, do for ourselves. Now I look at it as a positive when people make those types of comments, I figure I must be doing something right. Quote
