I need some LDS advice from my friends :):)

OK, So here is the deal:

Last night we ( Michigan ) got POUNDED with the white stuff ( for my friends who do not speak Catholic, that means snow :)) Ceeboo wakes up at 6 am and gets out his SUPERDEEDOOPER 8 horse power, 5 gear, fuel injection, King of all, gorgious red snow blower. ( I call her " Brenda the Boss ", yes she is female )

So here is where I need some advice as to how a self proclaimed Christain ( Me ) can handle my situation.

I do my walk and think of my neighbor, he is a GREAT guy, so I do his walk. Well, the next house is a single mom so I do hers as well. Yup, you guessed it :), the next two houses are elderly folk so I do them as well. ( Ceeboo is now getting cold and tired but the story continues :)). The next house ( we are now 5 houses down and I can't even see my house anymore ) is a house where my kid plays with their kid, SOOOO I do his.

The next one ( I am not sure I am even in my city anymore :)) is a woman who is shoveling ) Yes I do her.

All in all I did about 13 houses and STILL feel bad at the one I left off. I wonder what the person thinks where I stopped.

Advice please, when and where do or can you stop and still shine your light??

A very tired and cold Ceeeeeeboooo

I am reminded of that line from the movie The Guardian when the main character is asked who he saves and he says (summarizing of course) he swims as hard as he can for as fast as he can and when he can do no more and the sea takes the rest than he is done.

It sounds like you have done all you can and that is what matters. Now when you rest up can you come to my neighborhood as we are about to get pounded by the white stuff. :nana::D

You see, this is why you need a rivalry, Ceeboo! Just think: You can talk to your wife about how terrible (x) is and how you'll get even with him. Then, you can stop whenever you want and say "Hah! Let's see (x) do as many as I did!"

It's foolproof! Spite is the greatest reason to do -anything-.

We sure did get pounded, im in south central Michigan and we dont have a snow blower but I do have a four wheel drive that gos right though it. You do what you can if you have the energy, if you feel the need to help more then do it , but dont get yourself sick over it.

Hi Gwen :)

Because there is no " laugh button " on this thread, I will offer you this :lol::lol:

BTW, does that mean I skip my house as well??:lol:

Good question, ceebs. I think that if you do what you can, then you've done enough. I know you're Catholic, but there is a scripture in the Book of Mormon that says it better than I:

Mosiah 4:27 And see that all these things are done in wisdom and order; for it is not requisite that a man should run faster than he has strength. And again, it is expedient that he should be diligent, that thereby he might win the prize; therefore, all things must be done in order.

To me this means that the Lord only expects us to do what we can. God is a God of order and care. He cares about you just as much as he cares about your neighbor. So if your best is doing the 5 houses rather than the 6th, then you've pleased God and you can be satisfied.

Obviously, you haven't pleased neighbor #6, but if it's that big a deal, send a shovel with cookies on the shovel part (use decorative plastic wrap). Cookies makes everything better!

Since you missed my house, you obviously didn't do enough....I'm just south of you in Indiana, so it isn't like you have to go that far.

Seriously, we all do what we can. I always have the feeling that I'm not doing enough, but even some good goes a long way.

(btw....this is how I felt when I wrote my "little Matchgirl" story. Perhaps I need to make it into the Misshalfway Chronicles so that I can include a wider LDS.net cast. Careful Lilered and Hemi.....I might just have to write about you next! ( scribbling on my pad of lined paper and calling my lawyer for the copywrite and to prepare it for syndication.)

Hey ceeboo. You can't do everything. I know that if I had been in your shoes I too would have felt bad. But if you keep doing the "just one more" thing soon enough you'd end up missing out on time with family and other necessary things. Maybe they won't even notice that one person was nice to five people and not them. After all, theirs really isn't the ONLY house you didn't do. There were lots of houses you did not do!

I have a very serious opinion to offer.

Service offerers sometimes confuse their stewardship, and assume some duties they shouldn't. It is not a person's duty to assume the duty of making people happy, or making sure they think a certain way about the service. People offering service should not assume the duties of spin doctoring, making sure the service is received in the intended way.

Nope, it's just their job to offer service. Those who receive the service, and those who witness it, they are the ones who bear the duty of deciding how to recieve it and react to it.

In other words - be this guy:

A man walked along a beach after high tide. The beach was covered in starfish as far as the eye could see, and the man was picking them up and tossing them back into the ocean as he walked. Someone saw the man, and said to him "Why do you bother? There are so many of them - you'll only be able to save a tiny fraction of a percent of them! What you are doing makes no difference!"

The man stooped and picked up another starfish, said "It makes a difference to this one," and tossed the starfish back and continued his walk.

You make a good point. I would add that sometimes service receivers put unintended expectations on the service giver.

It would be nice if service could just be "service" without judgement. A good reason to provide service when not one is watching?

A side note related to my earlier post. . . it took the neighbors a while to figure out who was shoveling for them. Most worked or were elderly. It was fun to watch them asking around. :D
