LilylovesJesus Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 Do you have a favorite hymn that has had an impact on your testimony? Any stories of music bringing one back to the gospel, or playing a part in conversion? Has religious/lds music made a positive change in your home? I'd love to hear about it! Thanks! Quote
Maxel Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 (edited) My favorite hymn has always been 'A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief'. After that, 'I Know That my Redeemer Lives'. The numerous times I've felt the spirit due to listening to those two hymns, among others hymns and religious songs, have had an invaluable impact on my testimony. I'd share specific stories, but... I can't remember any. In this regard, I reflect the old saying, 'I can no more remember the books I have read than the meals I have eaten, yet they make up who I am today'- but for spiritual experiences and testimony. pam Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 My favorite hymn has always been Be Still My Soul Be still, my soul: The Lord is on thy side; With patience bear thy cross of grief or pain. Leave to thy God to order and provide; In ev'ry change he faithful will remain. Be still, my soul: Thy best, thy heav'nly Friend Thru thorny ways leads to a joyful end. Quote
Michael_Newman Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 Climb Every Mountain is a favorite. There was also another one by Neil Diamond from the last film he did that I liked. Although not a "hymn", the lyrics reminded me of our relationship with the Savior. My very best,Michaelhttp://www.lds.net/forums/picture.php?albumid=9&pictureid=77 Quote

Madriglace Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 With out a doubt the hymn "I Stand All Amazed" has had the most profound effect on me and on my testimony .. I can very rarely get through it without the tears coming. I stand all amzed at the love Jesus offers me Confused at the grace that so fully He profers me I tremble to know that for me He was crucified That for me a sinner He suffered He bled and died I marvel that He would decend from His throne divine To rescue a soul so rebelious and proud as mine That He should extend His great love unto such as I Sufficient to won to redeem and to justify This hymn helped me to internalize the atonement. I came to realize that it wasn't about the Savior dying for the sins of the world ... it was about the Savior going to the Garden and bleeding from every pore for what I had done. This was about me because He loves me and he knows me ... it is so amzing to me to know that He knows my name and He knows who I am and He loves me anyway. Quote
Elgama Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 my favourite LDS hymn is Sunshine in my Soul My favourite hymn that is the one I carry in my heart is this one it isn;t in the LDS hymn book but I sing it when I am struggling Be Thou My Vision Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart; Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art. Thou my best Thought, by day or by night, Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light. Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word; I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord; Thou my great Father, I Thy true son; Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one. Be Thou my battle Shield, Sword for the fight; Be Thou my Dignity, Thou my Delight; Thou my soul’s Shelter, Thou my high Tower: Raise Thou me heavenward, O Power of my power. Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise, Thou mine Inheritance, now and always: Thou and Thou only, first in my heart, High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art. High King of Heaven, my victory won, May I reach Heaven’s joys, O bright Heaven’s Sun! Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all. Traveler Posted March 6, 2009 Report Posted March 6, 2009 Do you have a favorite hymn that has had an impact on your testimony? Any stories of music bringing one back to the gospel, or playing a part in conversion? Has religious/lds music made a positive change in your home? I'd love to hear about it! Thanks! I grew up with a story of my Grandfather playing “Oh My Father” on the piano to accompany his singing to convert a family that was not receptive in a far off country. This hymn became an early favorite of mine and sustained me through many “dark” nights of my life. It has long had special spiritual significance. I also had the opportunity to sing a special version with the choir at the dedication of the Belleview Washington temple in the Celestial room along with “The Spirit of G-d Like a Fire Is Burning”. I am witness to the spiritual power of music at such a holy circumstance and am unable to give any worthy description of that experience. I am also unable to sing either of these songs anymore at worship without being overcome. The Traveler Quote

Guest missingsomething Posted March 6, 2009 Report Posted March 6, 2009 1. pg 193 I stand all amazed - this song reminds me of how much my savior loves me and when all else is going wrong, it calms me. 2. I love to see the Temple - I sing my girls to sleep with this... odd lullaby I know...but... 3. Because I have been given much - I try to live this standard... 4. Redeemer of Israel and How Great Thou Art... two songs from my baptism...and I remembered them from a child in another church. 5. ALL of Michael McKleans songs. He is unbelievable in channeling the spirit for me. I STILL listen to these - i keep them in my car and on my ipod. My girls know and love these songs... I also sing Which Part is Mine... to my girls at bedtime. I met him once, had a great talk with him... I wish he would publish a book to give the means of all his songs... it adds to them. 6. Jesus Was No Ordinary Man... I used to play this on flute, and it helps me be thankful for my Savior. You know - music can touch my soul when nothing else can penetrate it. I was a member for 3 wks when I was called to be the chorister... the church manual on this says... that nothing can set the environment and invite the spirit like a song can. Afterall... A song remembers when... Quote
